Announcements and updates specifically from the 2013 convention year.

December 2013

January General Meeting and Special Elections

The January general meeting will be held on Sunday, January 12, at 1:00pm at:

Hilton Vancouver Washington (Google Maps)
301 W 6th St
Vancouver, WA 98660

We will be holding special elections to fill vacancies in the positions of President (Chair) and Director of Relations.

This meeting is open to public attendance. Voting is open to Altonimbus Entertainment Members (Kumoricon staff for 2013 or 2014). The term of membership of Kumoricon 2013 staff remains active due to the overlap in annual staff terms.

Members must be present in person to vote, except for proxy voting. If you are a Member of Altonimbus Entertainment but cannot attend the meeting, you may designate another Member as your proxy. This means that the Member you designate as your proxy is authorized to cast your vote in your stead for any election or matter that comes before the membership for a particular meeting. A Member may only act as a proxy for no more than two other Members for a particular vote. You may authorize a proxy in either of two ways: (1) The Member not attending the meeting may authorize another Member using the online proxy authorization system, or (2) The proxy attending the meeting may bring a printed form to the meeting signed by the absent Member. Only one or the other is required, not both. The full proxy policy is printed on the authorization form.

There is a more detailed elections process document available to staff members (staff login required) detailing the elections meeting policy and procedure. The board is currently considering certain changes to the election policy and procedure. Any changes under consideration will be decided by Dec. 30 and released to staff very shortly after. A summary of the elections procedure is publicly available. Nominations are open on the forum until Jan. 7, 11:59pm. You may ask questions to candidates in the respective candidate Q&A threads for each position.

We have released the tentative membership meeting schedule for the 2014 convention year. The Meetings page will always have the most up-to-date schedule.

Changes to the Board of Directors

It is with regret that we announce the resignation of two members of the Kumoricon Board of Directors, effective December 19. T.J. Stinson has resigned his position as President and Sarah Paige has resigned her position as Director of Relations. We would like to thank each of them for their years of service on the Kumoricon Board and wish each of them well in the future.

We will hold a special election at a meeting of the membership to fill the vacancies in these two positions. Details will be announced in the coming days.

As we continue to transition to the 2014 convention year, we’d like to thank all of our convention attendees and staff, and wish everyone a happy holiday season.

Annual Meeting of the Membership and 2014 Elections

The Annual Meeting of the Membership will be held on Sunday, September 29, at 11:00am (note earlier time) at:

Hilton Vancouver Washington (Google Maps link)
301 W 6th St
Vancouver, WA 98660

At the Annual Meeting of the Membership, elections will be held for the following positions:

  • Chair/President
  • Director of Membership
  • Director of Operations
  • Director of Programming
  • Director of Publicity
  • Director of Relations

This meeting is open to public attendance. Voting is open to Altonimbus Entertainment Members (Kumoricon staff).

Only one or the other is required, not both. The full proxy policy is printed on the authorization form. Online proxy authorization will be available by Sep. 16.

There is a more detailed elections process document available to staff members (staff login required) detailing the elections meeting policy and procedure. A summary of the elections procedure is publicly available. Nominations are open on the forum until Sep. 24, 11:59pm. You may ask questions to candidates in the respective candidate Q&A threads for each position.

The meeting starts two hours earlier than normal, at 11am, to provide enough time for all the elections.

End-of-Convention Announcements

We’re very excited to announce that Kumoricon 2014 will be returning to the Hilton Vancouver Washington and the Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay for Labor Day weekend 2014. But there’s one big change: We will be on Friday through Monday. That’s right. Four days.

Our mascot contest winner for 2014 is:

Artwork of the mascot winner featuring a blonde character in a blue and white sailor-style outfit with a matching umbrella, in both full-body and chibi styles.

Artist: CCLu

Our paid attendance total is 5846, an almost 1100 increase over last year. With 376 staff members, this has been a hugely exciting and successful convention!

Our charity auction for the Sunshine Division raised $2838. Thank you to all our auction donors and bidders!

For Kumoricon 2014, we are making an important change to improve our badge system: We will no longer mail badges for pre-registered convention memberships. Instead, all pre-registered attendees will pick up their badges at the convention.

The reasons we’re changing are pretty simple: Every year, many badges get lost in the mail. It’s another thing you need to remember to bring to the con, so removing two steps makes everything simpler.

What won’t change: Pre-registered convention members will still get a fancy souvenir badge. Same badge, you just pick it up when you get here.

Thank you to all our attendees, volunteers, and staff for making this such a wonderful convention!

Promotional Late Afternoon Child Prices

As a special promotion for days two and three of Kumoricon 2013, children ages 12 or under can register for a free single-day membership on Sunday after 4:00 pm, or Monday after 12:00 noon.

Please remember that regular minor accompaniment policies apply, particularly that minors age 12 and under must be accompanied at all times by a parent or legal guardian who is also a paid member.

Please also note the registration hours; on Sunday, this special promotion runs from 4:00-5:00pm, and on Monday, from 12:00 noon to 3:00pm, and that most convention events conclude on Monday by 4:00pm.

August 2013

Guidebook Released

Kumoricon’s mobile schedule guide is now available for the Guidebook app! The app is available for iOS and Android devices (including non-phone devices like iPod touch—works well without a network connection). It features the complete schedule, maps, Twitter, photos, and more. Mark events to create a personalized schedule! After you install the app, search the guides for “Kumoricon 2013”. The guide will be automatically updated up to and during the convention if there are schedule changes.

New this year: The Guidebook contains cosplay photoshoot schedules.

Artists Alley Hours Updated

There has been a change to the Artists Alley hours previously published online, and printed in the Program Book and Pocket Guide.

Artists Alley hours will be:

Saturday: 10am-6pm
Sunday: 10am-6pm
Monday: 10am-2pm (no change)

The updated Artists Alley hours are the same as for the Exhibitors Hall. You can view the latest event schedule here.

Seeking Additional Exhibitors Applications

We have exciting news for anyone who missed the deadline to apply for Exhibitors Hall. We have a few more spots available in our Exhibitors Hall this year, which means we are temporarily accepting exhibitors applications for Kumoricon 2013!

As you may know, the Exhibitors Hall and Artists Alley are moving to the Hilton garage this year, which means more space and a more central location. We’re turning the garage into a great space, adding carpeting, several large air conditioning units, and providing Wi-Fi for exhibitor use.

If you are interested in being an exhibitor this year please email exhibitors@kumoricon.org.

Mascot Contest Entries Revealed

Staff voting for the Kumoricon 2014 mascot has concluded, and a winner has been determined. However, the winner is a secret until the announcement at Closing Ceremonies at Kumoricon 2013. Until then, you can browse the gallery of entries and hope for your favorite!

Guest Autograph Guidelines

We’ll be hosting autograph signing sessions for our guests of honor at Kumoricon (see schedule for locations and times). To allow as many attendees as possible an opportunity, please follow these guidelines:

  • Each person is limited to two items to be signed.
  • A guest may decline to sign any item they wish.
  • Guests will do their best to sign items for as many people as possible. But there is no guarantee they will be able to make it through the entire line.
  • Please have items to be signed ready when you approach the front of the line.
  • If you would like a photo taken, please have your camera or phone out and ready when you approach the front of the line. A Kumoricon staff member will then be able to take pictures while the guest is signing for you.

Kumoricon 2013 Schedule Released

The Kumoricon 2013 schedule is now available! Peruse our complete event listing, maps, and download the schedule charts in PDF format. Visit Events and Schedule for full information.

Continuing from previous years, we will very soon release our guide for the very popular free Guidebook app for iOS and Android devices. The Guidebook app will contain our complete schedule, event descriptions, maps, and much more, for convenient viewing on your smartphone, pocket device, or tablet. Details and instructions will be posted here once it is available.

Exhibitors Hall and Artists Alley Moved to Larger Space

We are pleased to announce that Kumoricon 2013 will be doubling the sizes of its Exhibitors Hall and Artists Alley by moving from the Red Lion into the garage of the Hilton. Attendees and exhibitors alike have been anticipating a larger space for several years and we are pleased to be able to provide a new and improved location. To create the best space possible for our exhibitors, artists, and attendees, we are adding carpeting and air conditioning for the event.

DJs at Kumoricon

Once again, Kumoricon will feature two late night dances with a great lineup of DJs.

Join us immediately after the Kumori Ball for an all K-pop and J-pop dance party. Nothin’ but HITS and DANCEFLOOR JAMS expertly mixed by Initial P, DJ Hojo, and DJ Bishie.

And Sunday night, get ready to strut your stuff. Join DJ DiscoSnake and DJ Gino Mari as they play a mix of some of your favorite music!

Industry Guests

We’re happy to be hosting returning industry guests FUNimation and Dark Horse!

FUNimation continues to be one of the leading companies in English dubbed anime, with 8,500 episodes available on their website alone. They haven’t forgotten their sub fans either. With FUNimation’s Simulcast and a subscription to their Elite Video Subscribers program, you can see the new Attack on Titan episode the day after it airs in Japan.

This year, Dark Horse is celebrating its 25th year of publishing manga. Today, Dark Horse has the two longest running manga series in America, and has been publishing manga continuously for longer than any other publisher in the US.

FUNimation and Dark Horse are presenting several industry panels at Kumoricon 2013. Make sure to check them out!

Final Pre-Con August General Meeting

The final general meeting before the convention will be held on Saturday, August 17, at 2:00pm (note later time), at:

This is an important meeting for last-minute planning and staffing information for the convention! Although staff registration is closed (except for finishing already started or approved registrations), you can also get involved with volunteer opportunities.

Cassanda Morris is most recognized for her voice acting work in anime, video games, and audiobook narration. The Kumori Ball is a semi-formal dance at the convention, and proper attire is required. Please review the dress code to make sure you are prepared. If you are not properly attired, you will be turned away at the door.

Delay in Artists Alley Notifications

Unfortunately, the date by which we will notify Artists Alley applicants of their acceptance status has been moved back to July 23. We apologize for the delay, during which we finalize some important details. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Haven't Received Your Badge Yet?

We have sent email to pre-registered attendees who have not received their badges due to errors (missing first or last names, incorrect or missing dates of birth, incorrect addresses, etc.). If you pre-registered more than two months ago and have not received it yet, please check your inbox.

If you have not received an email from us and you still haven’t received your badge after more than two months, please email us at registration@kumoricon.org because we have had badges returned to us and a few dozen have reportedly gotten lost in the mail this year.

If you have emailed us and did not get a reply, please check your spam folder because some of our emails are being marked as spam for a few people.

If you have any questions or issues with your order or your badge, please feel free to email us at registration@kumoricon.org.

August General Meeting

The first August general meeting will be held on Sunday, August 4, at 1:00pm, at:

Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay (Google Maps link)
100 Columbia St
Vancouver, WA 98660

This meeting is the last meeting to register as staff for Kumoricon 2013. After this meeting, people who have not completed their staff registrations may volunteer at the convention but won’t be considered staff.

There will be a bylaws amendment presented to the membership for a vote at this meeting. The bylaws amendment creates a new position on the board, the Director of Membership, and folds the Facilities Liaison and Vice Chair into one position, both changes starting with the 2014 convention year. Bylaws amendments require a vote in approval both by the board and by the membership to pass. The board has unanimously passed this amendment and recommends that the members vote to approve it. Details of this amendment, including the full text and a copy of the bylaws with annotated changes, are available in the Bylaws amendment to create Director of Membership forum thread in the staff area. (To access this link requires being a staff member, being logged into the forum, and linking a forum account. Please contact secretary@kumoricon.org for any assistance.) Details of the amendment were also emailed to all ratified staff members at the time of the announcement.
