Event Descriptions

Basic Information

To attend an event marked 18+, you must have a hand stamp. ID will not be accepted at the door! Take your badge and ID to the Programming Booth to get your stamp (or Programming Office after hours). Some 18+ events are before curfew hours.

When an event on the schedule says "pass required", it means you need to pick up a pass from the Programming Booth earlier in the day. These passes are free, but usually run out quickly. Once all pass-holders in line have entered, we'll open the room to non-pass-holders if there's extra space.

30-minute line rule: Please don't line up more than 30 minutes ahead of any event.

Days listed in the schedule "switch over" at midnight. For example, an event that starts at 11pm on Sunday and runs for two hours will read: Sun 11:00pm-Mon 1am. After-midnight warning: An event that starts "Sat 12:00 am" means it is on Day 1 (Friday is Day 1).

Guest Autograph Guidelines

Below are the official autograph guidelines. Please see the Autographs FAQ for more information.

  • Each person is limited to two items to be signed per session.
  • A guest may decline to sign any item they wish.
  • Guests will do their best to sign items for as many people as possible. But there is no guarantee they will be able to make it through the entire line.
  • Please have items ready to be signed when you approach the front of the line.
  • If you would like a photo taken, please have your camera or phone out and ready when you approach the front of the line. A Kumoricon staff member will then be able to take pictures while the guest is signing for you.
  • To ensure as many people get through as possible, we request attendees do not ask for a voice recording.

Argentine Tango

Sun 10:30 am - 12:00 pm – Panels 3 (Heritage E – Hilton)

This style relies heavily on improvisation and following the emotion of the music rather than the beat. This makes it a harder style to learn, as there is no "official" form. In this beginner's class we will cover an 8-count sequence to help teach the dance, with fun moves for the faster learners.

East Coast Swing

Fri 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm – Panels 3 (Heritage E – Hilton)

East Coast swing is a fun, and social six count dance that is more about following the tempo than it is the count itself. We will be focusing on the basic steps in closed and open position as well as a few turns in both. Depending on the pace of the class, we may get into some more advanced moves.

This style is fantastic for beginners, and works as a strong foundation for many other styles. If you're looking for something to wet your feet, this is a wonderful place to start!

International Foxtrot

Sun 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm – Panels 3 (Heritage E – Hilton)

This is perhaps the most flexible of the ballroom dances. Practitioners of international foxtrot will be able to engage with the majority of classic and classical music. This is an integral dance to know if you're planning on attending an upscale function. All are highly encouraged to attend this beginner's class on the versatile foxtrot.

International Quickstep

Sat 10:30 pm - 12:00 am – Panels 3 (Heritage E – Hilton)

An integral part of a ballroom dancer's repertoire, the international quickstep is an energetic and classic dance that stands out for having a little more pop than the others. While the tempo is on the faster side of things, this dance shares many figures with the slow waltz and it is recommended you have a bit of background in that dance before jumping in here. This will nevertheless be a beginner's class covering the basics from square one, so if you're feeling a bit frisky, you are welcome and invited to jump right in!

International Slow Waltz

Sat 10:30 am - 12:00 pm – Panels 3 (Heritage E – Hilton)

This will be a class covering the basics of the slow waltz, originally called the Boston waltz. This slow waltz covers the fundamentals to all ballroom dancing and is a must-know for anyone hoping to dabble further in the world of ballroom dancing. This beginner's class is designed to wet your toes in what ballroom dancing will look and feel like.

A wonderful class for beginners, whether you want to solidify your basics, or broaden repertoire. All levels are welcome.

Nightclub 2 Step

Fri 10:00 am - 11:30 am – Panels 3 (Heritage E – Hilton)

Viennese Waltz

Sun 9:00 am - 10:30 am – Panels 3 (Heritage E – Hilton)

The perennial favorite Viennese waltz is a fast-paced waltz which is the style that most think of when hearing classical 3/4 metered music. While a staple of the ballroom styles, it is both one of the simplest and most difficult dances around. We strongly recommend you have prior knowledge of the slow waltz before taking this lesson, but we will cover the whole dance from the beginning. If your look includes swirling ball gowns or swaying tailcoats, this is the dance for you.

West Coast Swing

Sat 9:00 am - 10:30 am – Panels 3 (Heritage E – Hilton)

This is a popular dance that gains its popularity from its smooth movement, relaxed connection, and modern influence. If the sum of the dice rolled matches the number of a building that a player owns, he gets the effect of that building; in some cases opponents will also benefit from your die (just as you can benefit from theirs). Then, with money in hand a player can build a landmark or a new building, ideally adding to the wealth of his city on future turns. The first player to construct all of his landmarks wins!
