Kumoricon Poetry
« on: May 24, 2011, 02:17:15 pm »
Wrote a poem about Kumoricon and the love of the fandom, figured the forum might enjoy it.

Thoughts? Any feedback is appreciated. Really though, this is just a love letter from one otaku to the entire con-going culture. Muuuuucho amor.  ;D

Thank you, everyone! Your encouragement means the world. I'm so glad you all enjoyed that poem.

I finished a follow-up today, another poem about anime and the fandom. This one deals much more with key points in some of my favorites. Let me know what you all think. ^_^

Those are awesome!!!
my favorite lines was, "Me becomes the wonderful We."
because that's exactly how I feel.

It's funny last year I wrote a poem for school about kumo as well, it's kinda crappy though

That's a great log of Kumoricon memories, Wrath-chan! I love how you really encapsulated the Kumoricon experience in that piece of writing. Whether it was for school or not, you definitely caught some of the feelings that make Kumoricon so amazing and memorable. Thanks for sharing!

Another poem here. Wrote this a while back about a certain problem I've noticed in cosplay. It will probably make a lot of people hate me or think I'm an unsympathetic jerk, but just hear me out.

I don't think I'm being unreasonable. With this poem I just wanted to encourage people to strive to be as accurate in their cosplay as possible.

Really, the poem is a lot of fun (I was having fun with it anyway), and I make some criticisms about the way people act, but if you're having fun and enjoying yourself, it really doesn't matter what I think.

It's not that cruel.
I wish people would work a bit harder on their costumes sometimes.
I knew someone who was Haruhi Suzumia (To lazy to make sure it's spelled right) and she didn't get a wig...and she had long red hair....It bothered me SO much
I know I'm not perfect, either because I lack the skills or just forget (the past few times I've worn my Rin Kagamine Costume I forgot the "02" on her shoulder) I put everything I got, and if Anything I act like the character!
If I can tell you put everything into your costume, I don't care. if you have the same cheep organization 13 cloak that you bought online as someone else for your costume but you don't have a wig or act in character I'm not going to say, "GREAT COSTUME MAN!" (Also those cloaks SUCK!)

Yeah, what you said about acting in character: that goes soooo far! I don't think most people give it much thought, but it can make a mediocre costume seem much better if the personality and mannerisms are there. Huge difference there.

And I'm definitely not saying I'm some super elite cosplayer or anything either. I have had some costumes I definitely wish to keep in the closet, lol. As long as someone recognizes they could do better, and puts their all towards their cosplay, that's all one can be asked to do, really.

Haruhi Suzumia (To lazy to make sure it's spelled right)

There's a "y" between the "i" and "a" at the end; that's it. ;)

I just thought of something; perhaps you guys can submit your poems to have them in the con book.  I know that in the past it's been JeffT that book submissions would go to, but I think it's someone else now.  Come to think of it, I've got one somewhere...

It's a haiku thread for my anime club.  I have two, which are both labeled under the name "Washu".  (Fairly easy to figure out, huh?)

haha, thanks for sharing, Washu! Those haiku were really fun. I loved "A Rant by Ranma". Usually I can't get into haiku, but yours were really enjoyable. Please do share more if you've got them.  ;D

Oh, and might I add...on CMAC, you have quite possibly the most distracting/disturbing signature gif I've ever seen, lol.

It would be nice to have in the program, or at the Creation Station

and yes the Rant by Ranma was fun to read!

That was really good Eve! It's so true, and reads really nicely.

Nice one Starry!

Patiently waiting.
Elevator full.
Unforgiving stairs.

Room on floor fifteen.
Cold unkind army of steps,
Oh how I hate you.

Somewhere awaits rest
Somewhere far beyond my reach
Out of my way, L
Why yes. I did draw that myself. How could you tell? I'm sorry too.

haha, nice tactic, Wrath. Ah, those lines waiting for the elevators...never again! lol

So you got to skip those lines because of the wheelchair, or did you still have to wait?

And since we're sharing haiku, here's one off the top of my head (let's see how it turns out):

Here, the cloudy con,
where samurai and schoolgirls
come and commingle.

If I get the time here in the next few days, I'm gonna try to write something.  Might be difficult on account of my lack of sleep that I know is going to happen... (maybe I should wait until it gets closer to the end of the week).  It's been awhile since I've written any poetry.  In fact, the last time I wrote poetry was for a Poetry class at Clark; I remember writing a poem based off of an anime series.  I'll see if I can find it...

Okay, I found this one, entitled "Me?"

Music, it is your passion;
You are no different than me.
You go to every concert in town with thousands of fans,
the genre of music means nothing to you;
I attend conventions with thousands of otaku,
and we don’t require alcohol or drugs to have fun.

Your walls are littered with posters,
The Temptations, Led Zeppelin, and even
Toby Keith, autographed with love.
They’re no different than my wall scrolls
of InuYasha, Ranma 1/2, and the Slayers,
that one signed by Crispin Freeman.

You even know the birth town of Elvis Presley.
Do you truly think you’re better than me?

Athletics, they are your driving force;
You are no different than me.
You care about the drafts and trades,
I care about who will be licensing Maria+Holic.
You can list any stat or record from memory;
I can quote most of Blue Seed.

You know which players make the most money,
I know voice actors don’t get paid much.
You wear a number “4” jersey, green and yellow,
and refuse the green and white, from New York.
I dress up in costumes that come from cartoons;
is that so different from your skull face paint
and your black and white armor?

You even take part in five fantasy leagues.
Do you really see a difference between you and me?

You are no different than me.
You are a nerd, a loser, a fan, just like me.

...and here's one that is entitled "Lt. Commander Data" (Guess what this one's about...)

I have no gender; I am an android,
though I am anatomically male.
I want to be human; there is still a large void,
though in strength and speed I do not fail.

From planet to anomaly our ship will sail;
Setting the course, I am responsible for that.
Adventures on an uncharted trail;
If we encounter the Borg, I am prepared for combat.

In my pursuit, I decided to get a cat;
She is striped, so I named her Spot.
One day Counselor Troi asked me if she looked fat.
Women and their weight; I understand that not.

Lieutenant Commander Data is my name,
wanting to be human is my game.

...and one entitled "The Vow of Kusanagi" (based off of "Blue Seed")

This is my destiny,
To protect this sacred belle;
her name is Momiji.

I will shed the blood of the Aragami;
From the living, they’ll be expelled.
This is my destiny.

Her sacrifice will save this country;
Japan will not be damned to Hell.
Her name is Momiji.

This is what fate made us be,
A historic tale to tell.
This is my destiny.

She makes me feel genuinely happy,
I vow to protect her well;
Her name is Momiji.

Together we’ll be free,
A solemn vow from a rebel.
This is my destiny;
her name is Momiji.

It looks like those are it...

Nice writing, Washougal. I like the connection you made in the first poem between obsessions and interests. It's pretty odd how a lot of people can demonstrate the same amount of passion as a nerd, but not consider themselves nerdy because of the object of their passion or interest. Nerdy = passionate to a great, almost compulsive degree, about something - what it is just doesn't matter. We're all nerds, geeks, otaku. Love it, haha

And of course the one about Data was awesome. I don't even like Star Trek, but you were able to break through my inexperience with the story and still made me familiar with Data and understand the situation. You portrayed the character well, and I like the fact that it's a sonnet - fitting for a character that is robotic and structured, but still desiring of emotion and humanity. ^_^

And I am not familiar with Blue Seed, but I think you chose a great form for the poem. The repetition of words and rhyme scheme created a really contemplative, focused tone, and it drew me in quickly.

Oh, and we can't have a new page without a poem on it, so...

There once was a princess named Lum
Whose darling was truly quite dumb;
He'd flirt with each skirt
Even though it would hurt
This princess with sparks in her thumb.

hehe, I like how that turned out.  ;D

I chose to compare music to it because the two members of my family who try and "talk some sense" into me are obsessed with music.  For awhile, one of them decided to make me more knowledgeable about music by having me name the band performing a song on the radio before the song was over.  I think I only got one...  The sports was chosen because I can relate to it, as well.

The Data one was because part of the assignment required picking a fictional character to "take the role of" or something like that.  Data is my favorite character in all of Star Trek, and I've often thought about cosplaying as him someday, especially since many people I've known have said that I look like Brett Spiner.

The Blue Seed one is in a poetic form called Villanelle.  I tried to write one with a few other series in mind, but this one was the one that I found to be easiest.

^ That was a fun limerick!

Ah, yeah, I've done Villanelles before, but I don't think I've ever done a successful one (where I was happy with the outcome, I mean). So, maybe I need to take it up again and see if I can make it work. Some forms of poetry are just a bit too constricting, even for me (someone who usually loves poetic structure and used to dread blank/free verse).

And thanks, I'm glad you liked my little Limerick of Lum, haha. I just keep showing my age with these decade-old anime I write about, don't I? lol
