Kumoricon Poetry
« on: May 24, 2011, 02:17:15 pm »
Wrote a poem about Kumoricon and the love of the fandom, figured the forum might enjoy it.

Thoughts? Any feedback is appreciated. Really though, this is just a love letter from one otaku to the entire con-going culture. Muuuuucho amor.  ;D

Thank you, everyone! Your encouragement means the world. I'm so glad you all enjoyed that poem.

I finished a follow-up today, another poem about anime and the fandom. This one deals much more with key points in some of my favorites. Let me know what you all think. ^_^

Those are awesome!!!
my favorite lines was, "Me becomes the wonderful We."
because that's exactly how I feel.

It's funny last year I wrote a poem for school about kumo as well, it's kinda crappy though

That's a great log of Kumoricon memories, Wrath-chan! I love how you really encapsulated the Kumoricon experience in that piece of writing. Whether it was for school or not, you definitely caught some of the feelings that make Kumoricon so amazing and memorable. Thanks for sharing!

Another poem here. Wrote this a while back about a certain problem I've noticed in cosplay. It will probably make a lot of people hate me or think I'm an unsympathetic jerk, but just hear me out.

I don't think I'm being unreasonable. With this poem I just wanted to encourage people to strive to be as accurate in their cosplay as possible.

Really, the poem is a lot of fun (I was having fun with it anyway), and I make some criticisms about the way people act, but if you're having fun and enjoying yourself, it really doesn't matter what I think.

It's not that cruel.
I wish people would work a bit harder on their costumes sometimes.
I knew someone who was Haruhi Suzumia (To lazy to make sure it's spelled right) and she didn't get a wig...and she had long red hair....It bothered me SO much
I know I'm not perfect, either because I lack the skills or just forget (the past few times I've worn my Rin Kagamine Costume I forgot the "02" on her shoulder) I put everything I got, and if Anything I act like the character!
If I can tell you put everything into your costume, I don't care. if you have the same cheep organization 13 cloak that you bought online as someone else for your costume but you don't have a wig or act in character I'm not going to say, "GREAT COSTUME MAN!" (Also those cloaks SUCK!)

Yeah, what you said about acting in character: that goes soooo far! I don't think most people give it much thought, but it can make a mediocre costume seem much better if the personality and mannerisms are there. Huge difference there.

And I'm definitely not saying I'm some super elite cosplayer or anything either. I have had some costumes I definitely wish to keep in the closet, lol. As long as someone recognizes they could do better, and puts their all towards their cosplay, that's all one can be asked to do, really.

Haruhi Suzumia (To lazy to make sure it's spelled right)

There's a "y" between the "i" and "a" at the end; that's it. ;)

I just thought of something; perhaps you guys can submit your poems to have them in the con book.  I know that in the past it's been JeffT that book submissions would go to, but I think it's someone else now.  Come to think of it, I've got one somewhere...

It's a haiku thread for my anime club.  I have two, which are both labeled under the name "Washu".  (Fairly easy to figure out, huh?)

haha, thanks for sharing, Washu! Those haiku were really fun. I loved "A Rant by Ranma". Usually I can't get into haiku, but yours were really enjoyable. Please do share more if you've got them.  ;D

Oh, and might I add...on CMAC, you have quite possibly the most distracting/disturbing signature gif I've ever seen, lol.

It would be nice to have in the program, or at the Creation Station

and yes the Rant by Ranma was fun to read!

That was really good Eve! It's so true, and reads really nicely.

Nice one Starry!

Patiently waiting.
Elevator full.
Unforgiving stairs.

Room on floor fifteen.
Cold unkind army of steps,
Oh how I hate you.

Somewhere awaits rest
Somewhere far beyond my reach
Out of my way, L
Why yes. I did draw that myself. How could you tell? I'm sorry too.

haha, nice tactic, Wrath. Ah, those lines waiting for the elevators...never again! lol

So you got to skip those lines because of the wheelchair, or did you still have to wait?

And since we're sharing haiku, here's one off the top of my head (let's see how it turns out):

Here, the cloudy con,
where samurai and schoolgirls
come and commingle.

If I get the time here in the next few days, I'm gonna try to write something.  Might be difficult on account of my lack of sleep that I know is going to happen... (maybe I should wait until it gets closer to the end of the week).  It's been awhile since I've written any poetry.  In fact, the last time I wrote poetry was for a Poetry class at Clark; I remember writing a poem based off of an anime series.  I'll see if I can find it...

Okay, I found this one, entitled "Me?"

Music, it is your passion;
You are no different than me.
You go to every concert in town with thousands of fans,
the genre of music means nothing to you;
I attend conventions with thousands of otaku,
and we don’t require alcohol or drugs to have fun.

Your walls are littered with posters,
The Temptations, Led Zeppelin, and even
Toby Keith, autographed with love.
They’re no different than my wall scrolls
of InuYasha, Ranma 1/2, and the Slayers,
that one signed by Crispin Freeman.

You even know the birth town of Elvis Presley.
Do you truly think you’re better than me?

Athletics, they are your driving force;
You are no different than me.
You care about the drafts and trades,
I care about who will be licensing Maria+Holic.
You can list any stat or record from memory;
I can quote most of Blue Seed.

You know which players make the most money,
I know voice actors don’t get paid much.
You wear a number “4” jersey, green and yellow,
and refuse the green and white, from New York.
I dress up in costumes that come from cartoons;
is that so different from your skull face paint
and your black and white armor?

You even take part in five fantasy leagues.
Do you really see a difference between you and me?

You are no different than me.
You are a nerd, a loser, a fan, just like me.

...and here's one that is entitled "Lt. Commander Data" (Guess what this one's about...)

I have no gender; I am an android,
though I am anatomically male.
I want to be human; there is still a large void,
though in strength and speed I do not fail.

From planet to anomaly our ship will sail;
Setting the course, I am responsible for that.
Adventures on an uncharted trail;
If we encounter the Borg, I am prepared for combat.

In my pursuit, I decided to get a cat;
She is striped, so I named her Spot.
One day Counselor Troi asked me if she looked fat.
Women and their weight; I understand that not.

Lieutenant Commander Data is my name,
wanting to be human is my game.

...and one entitled "The Vow of Kusanagi" (based off of "Blue Seed")

This is my destiny,
To protect this sacred belle;
her name is Momiji.

I will shed the blood of the Aragami;
From the living, they’ll be expelled.
This is my destiny.

Her sacrifice will save this country;
Japan will not be damned to Hell.
Her name is Momiji.

This is what fate made us be,
A historic tale to tell.
This is my destiny.

She makes me feel genuinely happy,
I vow to protect her well;
Her name is Momiji.

Together we’ll be free,
A solemn vow from a rebel.
This is my destiny;
her name is Momiji.

It looks like those are it...

Nice writing, Washougal. I like the connection you made in the first poem between obsessions and interests. It's pretty odd how a lot of people can demonstrate the same amount of passion as a nerd, but not consider themselves nerdy because of the object of their passion or interest. Nerdy = passionate to a great, almost compulsive degree, about something - what it is just doesn't matter. We're all nerds, geeks, otaku. Love it, haha

And of course the one about Data was awesome. I don't even like Star Trek, but you were able to break through my inexperience with the story and still made me familiar with Data and understand the situation. You portrayed the character well, and I like the fact that it's a sonnet - fitting for a character that is robotic and structured, but still desiring of emotion and humanity. ^_^

And I am not familiar with Blue Seed, but I think you chose a great form for the poem. The repetition of words and rhyme scheme created a really contemplative, focused tone, and it drew me in quickly.

Oh, and we can't have a new page without a poem on it, so...

There once was a princess named Lum
Whose darling was truly quite dumb;
He'd flirt with each skirt
Even though it would hurt
This princess with sparks in her thumb.

hehe, I like how that turned out.  ;D

I chose to compare music to it because the two members of my family who try and "talk some sense" into me are obsessed with music.  For awhile, one of them decided to make me more knowledgeable about music by having me name the band performing a song on the radio before the song was over.  I think I only got one...  The sports was chosen because I can relate to it, as well.

The Data one was because part of the assignment required picking a fictional character to "take the role of" or something like that.  Data is my favorite character in all of Star Trek, and I've often thought about cosplaying as him someday, especially since many people I've known have said that I look like Brett Spiner.

The Blue Seed one is in a poetic form called Villanelle.  I tried to write one with a few other series in mind, but this one was the one that I found to be easiest.

^ That was a fun limerick!

Ah, yeah, I've done Villanelles before, but I don't think I've ever done a successful one (where I was happy with the outcome, I mean). So, maybe I need to take it up again and see if I can make it work. Some forms of poetry are just a bit too constricting, even for me (someone who usually loves poetic structure and used to dread blank/free verse).

And thanks, I'm glad you liked my little Limerick of Lum, haha. I just keep showing my age with these decade-old anime I write about, don't I? lol

I just told random that I'd let him borrow my copy of Blue Seed.  I can let you borrow it after he does, if he even agrees to borrowing it.

Almost all of my favorite episodes are because of Data!  The only exception is "Darmok," the one where Picard is on a planet with the captain of a race that speak using metaphors.  Great episode!  It deserved an Emmy!!!

I must go find then!
I like, "It's Elementary My Dear Data!" and the one where he tries to under stand the idea of "funny"

System?  If I get what you're asking, my Blue Seed is DVD.

"It's Elementary, My Dear Data" was great, despite it having Dr. Polaski... :-X
I just watched the one where he's trying to understand humor a few days ago; what was the main plot for that episode again...?  Oh, yeah, that's right, "The Outrageous Okona."  That one was great, too!

The plot was really stupid, I remember talking about it with my dad.
What was that one about? (i have watched very little of next gen)

I know that there was a game for it on the Sega Dreamcast (though I don't think it ever reached the US).  Perhaps we can exchange them some time.  The Outrageous Okona was about a guy who was accused of impregnating the daughter of a planet's ruler and stealing a national treasure from another planet, and both leaders want the Enterprise to give him to them, but not the other.  Kind of a demented Star Trek twist on Romeo & Juliet...  Oh, and Okona was a man-whore, too.  I think they indicated that he was with 3 or 4 different females of the ship's crew.

I found it too easy, healing after battle. I like being close to death after every boss battle and having to run to the inn and not die.
I love 4 and 9
is that a FF7 joke?

haha, I appreciate the healing after battle. It saves me the time of manually using magic to heal up, though I could see how it is too easy in some respects. I also like how there is no MP, just the ATB gauge.

And yeah, that last haiku was a VII reference (the limit breaks weren't a dead giveaway? haha). ^_^

haha, I'm sorry for the sarcastic tone of that last haiku. ^_^

I call this one an Ota(hai)ku - an otaku haiku - basically any poem that maintains the haiku's syllabic structure of 5,7,5 but goes on for more than 3 lines - because we otaku can never get enough! More cosplay! More cons! More anime! More ramune! There's no such thing as too much for an otaku, and likewise for the ota(hai)ku.

So much going on!
Anime! Panels! Cosplay!
How to do it all?
Thankfully I have this guide,
One bright highlighter,
Four good friends and, now, roommates,
Ten marbled bottles,
Equal boxes of pocky -
Strawberry Crush, 'natch -
And Day Zero in the 'space
To prep, thrill, and plan.

Well, I haven't even sat down to work on a new poem (I blame Chan...).  I think that I'd like to focus on one that shows things from the perspective of a staffer, focusing on the good and the bad.  (And maybe throwing in some personal experiences along the way).

Went out and did some cosplay shopping today, and went to Uwajimaya as well. I was reminded just how much of an otaku's dream the Beaverton Uwajimaya/Mill End/Michael's is. You can buy cosplay supplies, fabric, and then geek out on manga and bubble tea all within one city block. It's pretty amazing (even if Uwajimaya's stock of good treats and bread was low today).

A cosplayer's wonderland,
wafting from fruitful fabric fields
to hobbyist-stocked armories,
grabbing the means your costume needs
and basking in the endeavor's bliss,
before weaving awe-eyed
through the Waj's aisles,
careening between Kinokuniya's tomes,
and getting that inimitable fix
of ramune and soba.
A cosplayer's wonderland,
and an otaku's playground.

I agree, Jo-Ann's is a constant for me. I live within a mile or so of one, so I always go there for my craft supplies, but they don't always have the fabric I need, so I go out to Mill End for that most of the time. If you haven't been out there I recommend it. Great location.

Two more months to go,
Kumoricon nears like dawn,
Risen from the night
To shed its wonderment 'pon
The Couv's city light.

Yup yup, we interact so much with certain people online, but very well may never see them throughout the year, so when Kumoricon comes around again, for sure it's a reunion. There's just nothing else like it, coming together over love of fandom and culture and, most of all, friendship and shared passion. It's the best.

It's been especially true for us staff members.  We even talked about it at our "The Con Equipment Is Stored Away 'Till Next Year" party.  (No, that's not what we called it).  I really think things have been molding together quite well for the people of Kumoricon.

I definitely agree with you, Wrath. I'm really looking forward to Kumo this year because I've been talking to people online, and meeting up with people in person, and getting involved in panels and photoshotts and everything. I'm actually talking to people for once, which for me is pretty rare. XD So now when I go to Kumo, I'll be able to run into people I know and put faces to forum names and talk to people with the same interests as me. It just feels way more like I'm connected to the con than last year.

Eep! A page without a poem on it in a thread about poetry...must remedy situation...

The con is the kingdom upside down
Where nerdiness deserves the crown,
And the underground consumes a town
Erstwhile commonplace.
Here society's spurned may elate
With renown no other craft can equate,
And say each night 'Stay, Fate...
I'm not ready to leave this world yet.'

This is a song that parodies "The 12 Days of Christmas" that I posted in the Countdown thread.

On the 28th day of Kumoricon, con-goers gave to me:

28 Death Note victims,
27 cat ears,
26 episodes a season,
25 glomp circles,
24 sexy cosplays,
23 plushies I want,
22 schedule changes,
21 rolls of film,
20 people lost the game,
19 sticks of Pocky,
18 mudkips prancing,
17 cosplay skits,
16 autograph sessions,
15 Smash Brothers tourneys,
14 karaoke singers,
13 Final Fantasy's,
12 more karaoke singers,
11 days to wind down,
10 dollars for staff rates,
9 Senshi posing,
8 Street Fighter II characters,
7 Narutards fighting...
6 One Piece pirates, over...
5 BARS OF SOOOAAAAAAAP!!!
4 hours of waiting,
3 Tendo sisters,
2 hotels we're at,

And an epic weekend filled with memories!!!

So awesome! haha. Loved that, Washougal. A delightful combination of two things I love: Kumoricon and Christmas. (Might just have to steal that and sing it at some time this holiday, haha)

Tendo, from Ranma 1/2. Akane, Nabiki and Kasumi. I'm assuming that's what he meant, anyway, since I know Washu is a big Ranma 1/2 fan. XD

We flesh these foreign fantasies,
'coming whichever heroes we please
within this blossom-scented breeze
filled with thrilled otaku.
In us another realm appears -
dashing sadness, drying tears -
and every time this fan-tide rears,
figments walk among you.

In the registration line we wait.
The feeling of finally getting into the con is great.
But after three hours,
and loosing our will power,
The line is something we come to hate.

Lame limerick is lame.

haha, fun limerick is fun, more like it. I enjoyed that, and boy did it reflect a truth about con, lol. A downside to the weekend for sure. Lines....the con-goers natural enemy.

I love it Saki!

I remember way back during 2009 my mom accidentally had her badge waiting a will call. Took her at least 4 hours to go through. She was pissed...
and Sakuracon my friend waited in line for 5 hours to get hers. Would have been more if we hadn't run into a good friend of ours who let her join her.
For us who pre-ordered our it was just 3 hours, but still that was a way too long game of I-Spy

Yup. The long lines are just unavoidable, but at least you're gathered with others who are passionate like you are, and it gives you a great opportunity to make friends for the weekend. Though standing in line, no matter how many benefits, still sucks eggs, lol.

Thank you ;w;

Yeah, in 2009 (my first Kumoricon) i pre-registered my badge and i arrived on Saturday and i only had to wait like...2 minutes to get checked in, but last year i didn't pre register and i had to wait in line for about 3 hours to buy my badge OTL Plus i had no one to visit with considering all of my friends were smart and bought their badges earlier in the year.

Yeah meeting people is nice, helps pass the time. But all that standing...
Your welcome!
After mom's 2009 incident people who were staying at my house had to pre-order

18 days to go
I am so screwed
why did I wait?
Fabric is glaring at me
Telling me to sew
"In a minute," I say
An hour passes and I'm still here...

haha, the procrastinator's dilemma. Nicely expressed, Wrath. That's how I was up until a week ago. I'm infected now, though. I must work, otherwise I'm bored and feel like I'm wasting my time. Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go!!!

Kumoricon's two weeks away,
and I'm trying to make 'con-mode' stay,
so to ConTube I go
to watch PeeDeeFlo...
That gets me through the day.

Nice one, Kylite. We're gonna have to get some Yojimbo appreciation poetry in here now, heh.

Who can banish ne'er-do-wells
from the bounds of our gathered geekdom?
Who can shepherd squealing chibis
with patience and peerless aplomb?
Who stays up when all have slept,
keeping con under their thumb?
Yojimbo! Yojimbo!
There'd be no con without 'em.

So I wrote this last year in math class and only now found it again:
Waving the white flag by moonlight.
Eating pasta by daylight
Always running from a real fight.
He is the one named Hetalia,
He is the one...
HETALIA!

I was super bored and my math teacher was going on and on...
