Costume advice? Making a cloak/cape.
« on: July 18, 2006, 07:14:13 pm »
My friend is planning on cosplaying as Syaoran from Tsubasa Chronicle.  This will be his first cosplay/con and neither of us have too much experience at making things.  We are thinking that we may run into some trouble making his cape/cloak.  So if anyone could give any advice or instruction, it would be vey much appreciated.  Thanks so much!!  ^^

Here's a picture... (The guy with the green cloak.)

Hey there, Jimmy-San! ^^ I'm Rinni, it's lovely to meet you! Tsubasa, huh? Omigosh, my sister bought me the first three mangas of that series as a graduation present. I felt kinda bad because I didn't give her one when she had graduated a year ago. Oh well, she's awesome...

Anyways, I love Syaoran! I'm so happy someone is cosplaying him! I can see how that cloak can give you trouble ^^; I've scrounged around for some helpful links, I hope they'll do you good!

*****http://amtgard.com:8080/how2clok.pdf - This is a link to a PDF. format file that will open in Acrobat Reader. It's great, it shows patterns of a simple cloak, and has a picture of it as well! It is for a close-at-the-throat kinda of cloak, but maybe you could just add that little bit that is on Syaoran's cloak, make a little notch so you have a place to put that clasp that holds it together. The hood, here:

*** http://www.warofthering.net/forums/vbulletin225/upload/showthread.php?t=8707 - Has a whole sha-bang of info on cloaks, but no pictures, alas. It does mention about how to put on a hood though.

***** http://www.cosplaylab.com/cosplayers/costumes/details.asp?costumeid=110243 - Ohhh! Someone here did the same outfit you did! It has a couple pictures, good shots on how they made the cloak - I hope it helps!

*** http://www.cosplaylab.com/cosplayers/costumes/details.asp?costumeid=85530 - Another cosplay picture - someone did the same character and costume. I thought this was a good picture of that cloak! All that one is missing is the collar! ^^

I'll do some more later! I wish the best for your friend!

I'll be cosplaying as Kurogane one day, be sure to look for me, cloaks are kinda simple, the fancy neck parts are the hard part.
And now I'm a catgirl?

The voice of the one I love
was all I could hear as I lay broken in the darkness
My own voice faltered
My wings no longer had the strength to fly

We used Simplicity 9452 (cape B) for my cloak/cape thingy for my undisclosed costume that probably most people won't recognize. Still needs to be altered a bit but my mom (who did most of the sewing <.<) said it was a lot easier than she thought it was going to be.

I know you already have some great links, but I thought I'd add my two cents.  Cloaks are one thing you can find patterns for pretty easily.  I know if you go in an Joan Fabrics and look through their pattern books, in the ones which have halloween stuff, you can find a number of likely patterns.  From there it should be just a matter of some simple adjustments, and you're set!  My mom and I used this for a cape for prom a few years ago, and it turned out great!

*Tip of the day*

As far as attaching the hood, be warned: it is far easier to sew the outside of the hood to the cloak and hand-sew the lining down than to try and sew the lining in first and top-stitch the outside of the hood so that everything attaches nice. You'll save yourself a mint in new machine needles.

That is, unless you're not lining it.

But you are.

Aren't you...? O_o

Hm, no, I don't think we'll be lining it... we got a pattern and everything the other day... we have enough for the hood and the outside... but we can't afford any more fabric I think... ^^'

...Could you at least finish the seams? Please? ;_; Your cape will look better and last longer.

Um...  >_>  We'll follow the pattern exactly... except for the lining...  will that work?  <_<  (Complete sewing n00b)

For the most part, yes. The problem is that most patterns tell you to give 5/8ths inch seam allowance and most people just let that go and the fabric soon begins to unravel and will unravel through the seam. My recommendations are to use the overlock stitch function on most machines (it will look somewhat like _ /_ /_ / or _ /_\ _ /_\ _ ) or roll-hem the edges so that it doesn't come appart.

Another option is flat-feld seams. These can take a bit of practice, but end up looking really good if you're working on a project without lining. A flat-feld seam is the same kind of seam used on jeans, sails, and tents, which goes to show you how strong they are. What you do is press the seam open, fold the raw edge under on one side of the seam, and top stitch it down. Then you do the same to the other side. You have to be careful to stretch things enough so that it lies flat, but not too much so that it warps. If you don't have time, just go with one of the other two techniques mentioned above.

Hope this helps and doesn't just confuse. ^_^
