o.o I record and edit everything in Audacity. It's free and it's a pretty decent program. Also easy to figure out :3

If you're not a Garage Band-stocked Mac user, you can do amazing things with Cool Edit Pro (aka Adobe Audition), or you can use Audacity - it's free.

And you can get a mic from radio shack for a couple bucks, or off the internet for like...25 cents. Don't worry about the quality of the mic too much (unless you're doing a professional recording), because you can always clean it up with editing.

Update: So, I recently created and posted a couple of videos on YouTube of the song that I'd like to do for y'all. I haven't gone out and gotten a mic yet, mainly because I'm dealing with stupid issues with one of my credit cards right now AND I've been spending the past few days with Chan, who's been going through some stressful stuff lately.

Update: So, part of the stuff going on with Chan is that she's being kicked out of her house. I've been helping her pack (which has been an interesting experience...

). It turns out that she has a headset-microphone-thing that, according to her, will work just fine. I think she'll allow me to use it for this project, possibly even later this upcoming afternoon.

^^ hidoi... I hope everything turns out okay. IMO, any "tough love" that's not based on physical danger is dubious at best, and sometimes is just a poor excuse for letting ego supercede love.

If the headset-microphone thing doesn't work as well as you hoped, it might be worth trying a USB mike - IIRC, my combo mike/headset was only a little over $20. It's just my very limited experience, but I adore the sound quality. I don't think I'll ever go back to single-prong jacks.

^^ Hopefully. I talked with her about it, and she said that it might not work. I can use it, and was going to today; I spaced it, though, because I was trying to sleep.

^ It's more than "tough love" in this case. The person kicking her out is also moving to Lincoln City, but that won't be until this upcoming weekend. She just wanted Chan out sooner so that "she'll take the move seriously," or something like that. Chan's is a double-jack, from the way it looked (didn't get a good look at it, though). I could see a USB mic working amazingly compared to a prong jack.

o3o~ I just ordered a new headset w/ mic from Best Buy for about $30. From what I hear from my friends, it's quite good. Hopefully it'll be better than my current desktop mic, which really sucks .-.

my desktop mic is a Labtech, but I don't know anything else about it x'D while mixing I just plug my earbuds I use for my mp3 player into my laptop. poorly equipped I am 8'D

So, I did my song, but I didn't realize that the music itself wasn't in the recording. I'm not sure if I did something wrong or if I need to do some sort of syncing to the karaoke version. Audacity confuses my head...

do you need some help? If you want to record directly over a instrumental, while the instrumental is still playing, you need to make sure that in the preferences the box mared "overdub" is checked. If you record your vocals in a separate file, just select the whole vocal recording with ctrl A, then copy, and then open your instrumental and paste. The two audio files will play at the same time. If you need to sync it to the instrumental, you can select sections of your recording by clicking and holding and then pressing backspace or delete. If you need to add blank time without any vocals, click the place at which you want to add silence in, and go to "Generate"-->"silence". Then you choose how many seconds of silence you want.

For some reason, I am unable to get my file to be in a format that is compatible with Movie Maker; it will only work as an Audacity file, and refuses to be anything else.

Do this: "File>Export" Then you can save it as a WAV. Or if you download the Mp3 lame you can save as an Mp3. (=
