If you don't have a pic of you in your cosplay, you can send an image of the character you are cosplaying... it's a reference for us.  Just keep in mind that you're cosplay will need to be complete by the event.

If you can, send a pic of her in cosplay as soon as you can.. but until then, an image will be fine :)

:3 I think we should draw piece from a hat or something. That way it would be totally random.

Just for fun, I'll form a counter argument (I'm pretty nuetral on the selection of pieces):

If we draw out of a hat, it could result in a major time drain. Each person would have to come up to the hat, pull a piece name, either complain or cheer for what they got and this would all take some time for each of the 32 players.

Then you have people who would complain if they got something like a Pawn or a King (which, in reality, are two of the better pieces to be). This would result in more time lose, and possibly the lose of a player.

The counter argument's way of doing it would be to assign players to pieces with disregard to much less than character. No complaints would be heard and time would be conserved from the Chess masters to duke it out.

That is true but it would still be fun to draw out of a ht. you caould make a rule before doing so. like. you are what you get. no complaining.

Sorry i misspelled alot in that last post  :D :P
and i had ta add something to ;D
about the whole time drain thing. What you would do is form a line or circle (a circle would be quicker it always was in school), have people draw (and not look at what they got till everyone was done drawing) and then once everyone was done allow people to look and then say no complaining you are what ya got. most people wont complain to where we would run out of time. But then what you would do is make a list where you already have players assigned to peices,  that way if we did run out of time to do the hat idea we have a list already made.

Plus, if people are gonna argue or complain about what they are from a game of chance (the hat) then if u assign them parts they would complain there as well. (sorry if i missunderstood your idea of the assigning players thing)

 ;Djust stating my opinon :D

Cant wait to see everyone at Kumori-Con! :P

Hmmm, you put up a good counter argument, but again the other side fights back.

It's true, that it would be time consuming but wouldn't we draw during the early meeting so it won't be that bad?

The best aspect of the game is the characters.  When its random you lose that entirely. ( in which case,  making it 'first come first serve; isnt that great either)

AT sakura con, I (Renji) Ended up being sacrificed to save the king ( Great, a perfectly Renji thing to do) ..who was Gluttony  from FMA. .(  No. Never. EVER.) ) In that case we may as well just wear normal clothes.

Doing it based off of what suits the characters is the best way to go.

I don't think they were suggesting to do the teams randomly, but rather the pieces. As in, teams would be established and with in the teams they would randomly handle out pieces.

As for the argument of Random vs. Pre-selected.

I'm much more for pre-selected, read to go as soon as we get there. The pre-meeting would be put to better use if it was used to verbally explain the cosplay chess rules and to introduce the teams to their respective chess masters.

I'm for a No Complaining rule, makes perfect sense and I think it should be applied either way.

Yeah I think half the fun of it is not knowing who your gonna be but knowing that it'd fit your character. With the random you might get an "evil" character on the white team or even "cross" royalty (female King, or male Queen). With the Pre-selected way that won't happen, unless it fits the character.

Well, I can offer to reasons for offering a theoritical debate now:

1) It will eventually save Jamiche time if the time arises when she must decide how to approach asigning pieces.

and...

2) My personal reason, it keeps Cosplay Chess on the front page of the forums because we're replying to the thread, therefore generating awareness.

Well, this is a different topic than piece selection (as important as that may be), but I also want to throw in the suggestion of somehow figuring out a way so that all the pieces get to have some sort of fun in this (meaning, playing the attacker or the attacked). I recall at SakuraCon that this did not happen, and it was all a little...hectic.

D: I remember at Sakura con, that after the King was cornered the called a free for all and you just attacked people and it was a big ball of mess.

D: That's the only bad thing, is when your piece is never moved.

No, need to apolagize. It started as a simple suggestion, but its getting a little out of hand and we should let it go unless Jamiche asks an opinion.

I was so sad that I couldnt die dramatically cuz I was afraid Id pull my stiches. What a horrible Renji I make, HE woulda done it anyway. XP

That would come down to: Do you want a real chess game, or a cosplay chess skit?

In a real chess game, all the pieces shouldbe used. However, there is the possiblity that they will not be. It isn't always the wonderfully epic battles you see in movies or on TV specials (in fact, a lot of chess games in the media are horrifically inaccurate). If cosplay chess was a skit, it would be easy to find a match by one of the former great Grand Masters that would involve all the pieces getting their dues.

Chess matches at con are on different levels of how good they are and it depends on how well planned the event is, how in character the pieces are, and how good the players moving the pieces are.
I've seen video of epic battles, and I've also seen a very poorly planned game where they had to start over, because the bored with the pieces didn't match the real chess game being played and they couldn't figure out why.
I really think we need to plan as much of this as we can before hand. While I realise there's always a chance people won't show up, the event will go MUCH better if the pieces can prepare better.

I've been working at a concession stand to raise money for my choir the past week or so, so I haven't had time for anything else. 9 to 12-hour days kinda take up a bit of energy and focus. >.<

Okay, so I'm gonna send in my application for cosplay chess in tonight as soon as I can find a nice picture of my cosplay. ^_^

Edit: Uhh...would Noh-Face be classified as a guy?

Quick update for y'all -

We currently have 23 people registered, which means we still need at least 9 more people.  If you have not received an e-mail or PM from me confirming that your registration form was received, then you need to send in your information again.

Teams and positions will be decided once I have all the registration forms in, and I see which cosplays we have available.  If all goes well, you will be notified next week what your team and position are.  If we don't receive enough registrations prior to con to decide, we will be recruiting players at con, and you won't receive team/position info until the pre-meet on Monday.

The pre-meet will be an opportunity for you to get comfortable on the board, and a quick run-down of how the game will be played, as well as a chance to plan some battle strategy.  We will not be scripting the chess match, but we want you guys to be as prepared as possible.

And in reponse to the burning question - no, you don't get to pick your position, sorry.  All positions will be decided in advance, whether you get the info next week, or at the pre-meet.  Once you have your assigned postion, unless you can give me a compelling reason to change your assignment (or chocolate, I may be open for bribery ;D) that is the position you will play.

After you fill out the form, there is button at the top left that says "Submit by E-mail"... it will send the info to your e-mail and you just send (after attaching your cosplay images, please :) )

If that doesn't work for you (some people have had problems) you can just e-mail all the form info and your image to chess@kumoricon.org.

So where would you post the information of who's going to be in the event? Would it be private and the info is just given to those who make it?

Okay, check your e-mail... if you have received a confirmation e-mail from me, then you are good to go.  I received an Ed application, but that was the last one this morning... I don't think I received yours, Dark_M.  Try again, or if that doesn't work, just e-mail me the info.

I'm not sure yet how people will be notified (since this is the first year, I'm kinda making it up as I go along ;D).  I was leaning towards the idea of the team/postions being a surprise to the general public, and just e-mailing everyone their info... but soon I may be making a plea for a specifc type of cosplay, and that would give away the teams... hmm, decisions, decisions...
