Okay, since this Oregonian article seemed to set the standard , I'll see what I can do to dig it up. The Oregonian charges $2.95 for archived articles. I'll see if I can get it up on Friday after I get paid. OR we'll do this old school - library microfiche. Gus volunteered to go purusing.

i was talking to kendo boyfriend about this and he brought up a good point
"why should we care what others think as long as did you have fun at the con yes no yes? then why should we care if people think were geeks because of it"
para frazen he talks fast, and he reminds me of my not caring wht other peeps thinks rule

I know I have the article. I know I do. I have an "idea" where it is but it's more of an educated guess. I just need to go back to my parent's home and check my old room.

But if guspasho does decide to go check it out, I'm pretty sure it was the day before the convention in the Living Section if that helps out.

I thought the aritcle was a bit insulting myself.

I can explain it like this in two phrases:

1 Im such an idiot.

2 Your such an idiot

Which one is an insult and which is self inflicted abuse. Thats what I think of when you say we can call ourselves geeks but when the newspaper says it, its insulting.

I didnt like the title, felt a bit insulted, only read a few lines and gave up. I have better things to do than to read an article that I dont enjoy reading.

I also agree with some of you, I would rather have no press than bad press, its harder to recover from bad than to build on nothing.

Sure it doesn't show us in an awesome light..but how many articles about cons in general do? I think it's just cool that the exposure is out there, regardless of how we see it.

I'm surprised we're still talking about this. The situation seems pretty straight-forward to me: group of people has geeky obsession. Surprise! Everyone else thinks it's odd, and vaguely funny.

I have a geeky hobby and (gasp) I'm really not all that interested in what most people think about that. I'm free to consume whatever entertainment media I feel like, and I'm also entitled to laugh at others, such as, for example, those into pro-wrestling. You'll never get most people's approval. Move on.

I just wanted to post my appology to the journalist of this article. Although I still feel the same way about the context of the article I know that I cannot hold it against the journalist as she really did not know what she was walking into. I do wish we had perhaps had another journalist that was more familiar with this "crowd" but I can see some good of this as those who do not know about this world can be introduced to it and perhaps enjoy it

I think it's reat that there was some attention like this, but the title, and pieces of the article, I think were meant to slam anime fans, and not in a way that we would laugh about. To me, it felt like the writer was saying, "Dear God, why was I given this assignment?" or "And I thought Trekkies were pathetic."

Actually, I still have a few hard copies of it floating around. It's not too often that you get your picture on the frontpage of the newspaper (granted, the living section) without saving a life, killing someone, or becoming insanely rich.

I REALLY wanted to have my picture on the cover....I wore leather pants for nothing....

The reporter didn't come across as mean or seem like she wanted to poke fun at all. She really came across as...timid. I'm sure she has her own geeky obsession. (Maybe she's a Trekkie.

In response to the remarks made about the Portland Tribune article, Kumoricon Execs have opened a contest to write your own article. This article will be the info page and possibly the press release for Kumoricon 2007. Who can better tell what cons are really like than the fans themselves?

I know we've got a lot of talent out there. Check out the announcement in the Contest area of the forums for more info, and get writing! :O)

I know this is a tad bit late but...

...Was that Eternal Yamcha playing Tetris Attack? Man... I'm shameless. I think it was, because in "Versus" mode I was playing Bowser out of fear that if I played Ralph, the Raven that I'd get beaten and well... Ralph is a dominating force when used by me. Plus, I think I was player 1.

And yeah, that article made me shiver, but hey, any non-negative publicity is good... I especially like the part about the hotel clerks not being happy.

Hmm...I don't know whether I should be infuriated or amused...I guess I'll settle for vaguely displeased.

As far as newspaper articles go....you are DEFINITELY NOT supposed to call the people you're writing about "geeks" or "nerds" It's just not a good plan. I mean...if we have an army and all we could crush them X3
It probably would've been better if the person had done just a TAD more research or had watched a little anime before....or was just not completely ignorant.

The gothic Lolitas part was confusing.

I think I'll show the article to my newspaper class and see what then think >_<;
