Re: tie--
I used standard 1" wide masking tape and acrylic paints on black broadcloth. Note that the paint will soak through the fabric, so put something underneath. Preferrably not newspaper because the paint will glue the paper to the fabric.
(In case you want to know, I used 'Liquitex' brand acrylic: Naphthol Crimson and Titanium White.)

The red stripes were painted first. The way I measured was a little confusing-- they are 1" when measured along the length of the tie, not perpendicular to the stripes. Basically, the black+white areas are the width of one strip of masking tape (1" measured perpendicular to stripes) and the red stripes are 1" along the length of the tie, crossing the stripes at about 45 degrees (about 5/8" perpendicular to stripes).

The white stripes were added in last, centred between the reds. Again, I used the tape to measure-- one piece aligned with the top of one red stripe, another with the bottom of the stripe below that. The narrow space left between the tapes is where the stripe should be painted.

I HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE. I do things oddly. If you have questions, ask!

Emilee: you can also buy black paint to do touchups. When I did mine and Valeria's there were places the paint went under the tape, though that may have been because the only masking tape I could find was old and kind of crusty.

SK: Part of the joke of Homestuck is that's it's one of the MS Paint Adventures. Except Hussie makes it all in Photoshop.
He secretly draws omgorgeous art, and the later flashes are really super nice. But the whole crappy sprite thing is all part of the running gag that is Homestuck.

Yeah honestly I was kind of put off by the art style when I first started reading Homestuck... But you get used to it, and plus the quality of basically everything gets way more awesome as time goes on. Plus usually it's so effing hysterical that you don't even care about the art, or you're so caught up in the badassery that is the animations (which are actually really really great) that it makes the art better. PLUS THEN YOU'LL UNDERSTAND THE FANART, WHICH IS INDEED AMAZING
