SP: Sleep Paralysis
« on: August 28, 2010, 11:17:28 am »
....or other sleeping problems and disroders!

We have threads about not going to sleep, and why wou can't get to sleep, but we don't have one for what happens during sleep.

Recently, last night hurdur, I experienced sleep paralysis for the first time.
It's really scary and whatever, but is actually a pretty common thing for some people.

I say we share our stories about sleep paralysis, and all of the other wonderful things that go on after you shut your eyes!

Alsoooo, for those of you who have never heard of this, wikipedia is your friend.

The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli (1781) is what was thought to happen in olden days when you had sleep paralysis.

I've had sleep paralysis several times but the experiences were all so intense and personal that I'd rather not talk about them on a public forum.
But I will say that I've experienced it physically, visually, and audibly.

Yeah, please don't share anything you're not comfortable with.
I'm sorry that it's happened to you in that way.

I've heard that sleeping on your stomache stops it from happening....

I think it's also better to sleep on your side? I remember reading about that when I starting researching it a long time ago P:

I've heard that sleeping on your stomache stops it from happening....

This is why I always sleep on my stomach. The few times I happent  ofall asleep on my back weird sleep habits occur (such as moving to a different bed in my sleep, excessive talking, night terrors, etc.)

Maki - Haha, yeah. xD
I have a feeling that once it actually gets dark and I'm about to go to sleep, I'll be a little less brave, lolol.

Dubaby - Ah, that's scary!
I've tried sleeping on my tummy, but I can never breath right. o.e

Eh if I was fully aware and was like in an 'awake' status I would probably freak out but i'm pretty lucid for a good while till i fully wake up unless I adrenaline myself. If this did happen to me i woulda probably been like 'eh... your right body, sleep sounds good.' But yeah I would be freaked out in any situation where I didn't have any control of my body

Mhm, mhm, it's scary!
It only lasted for like....thirty seconds or so I think.

Oh, and this morning when I woke up, I went to tell my mom and step-dad what happened, and they didn't believe me at all. D:
My step-dad even laughed. >:U
Grr, I want them to have it so they know how I felt.

If I have experienced this I don't recall it happening or it was so brief that I didn't realize that it was happening. It would only freak me out if it lasted for more then 90 seconds, wait that is when I am at home in my bedroom. If this happens to me while I am not at home I would freak out after 15 seconds had pasted.

I can share a little I suppose, because this one's not so bad. ^^
One of the times I had it I couldn't talk or move, etc. I thought I was drugged because I heard voices coming from the back room (although I couldn't make out what was being said) and I was all by myself on the couch waiting for mom to get home from work. I started to focus on moving my big toe and eventually I was able to move again. After that I cautiously checked the back bedroom. Nothing! But you can bet I had a difficult time going back to sleep after that lol.
It really does happen to a lot of people though.
They say that it's common for a person to experience it at least once in their lifetime.
