Chainsaw fun!!
« on: August 05, 2008, 11:47:34 pm »
I have a question regarding my costume, and as a first time cosplayer I don't know many of the rules. My costume involves me having a chainsaw and I was planning on getting a real chainsaw, but I was also going to take the chain off so that it isn't dangerous only sounds real and I would even remove the gas from the tank so that I just have the effect of having a real chainsaw. Would I be allowed to bring it? It would make my costume better if I have it. Any advice would be much appreciated.

...just a shot in the dark, are you going as Edgar Roni Figaro?

Anyway, I wouldn't bring anything that works, even if it was disabled to such a degree. There's props that, while they don't look as real, wouldn't get you into any trouble.

Nope. If I were to go as Edgar though, I'd probably bring a drill I think, but that's just me. I figured I would start out with a simple costume and go as the Chainsaw Ganado. I really hope that I would be allowed to bring a real chainsaw because that would really tie it all together.

Even if it is broke down to the degree you mentioned, I'm pretty sure that'd be a no-go. It just is way too much heavy duty metal and potential fro problems. But I'm not staff so I don't really speak for anyone. It just seems like something they probably wouldn't go for.

like black jack said there might be some props you could get for it. I know halloween stores sell fake chainsaws, some even make actual chainsaw noises.  ;D but yeah I don't think a real one would work very well even dissembled that much.

You guys forget to mention how much of a pain it is to carry something like that all day for maybe 3 days...I had a wooden backpack for a prop last year and it was pure hell, so I recommend even if it was allowed that you find something lighter, no reason to make your first cosplay into an endurance test.

It's logical that you can't bring one.
It could be considered a weapon since it's also a power tool.
Why don't you try making one out of wood. I'm pretty sure if you try hard enough it could look life like.
Then you'd be able to peace bond it if they allowed it.

Removing the chain and the fuel is good, but the blade, without chain, still counts as live steel.

We are only allowing swords if they are peacebonded into their sheaths. Even dulled blades or stage steel. There would be no way to peacebond your chainsaw into the sheath.

I will contact the Yojimbo about this thought since it is their decision in the end.

I wasn't sure If i would be able to bring in my stage steel blade bound to the sheath, so I'm sure Tom is right about this one!

Good news! This is a quote from kylite, the Yojimbo Manager and the closest thing we have to a head of security,

"Tell him to come to the next meeting and discuss it with macalister as shjelton will be unavliable.

But unofficially I say if the chain is removed, the fuel has been cleared and it can be demonstrated that it cannot be started and then bonded I say its cool."

So you need to speak with his superiors in Operations and you might be able to use it after all!

Meeting? What meeting is this? I am a virgin the the whole cosplay scene so I don't know anything about anything save the things that I hear from Chado. If I can make it to the meeting then I will, but if it is outside of Bend then the probability is small I'm afraid.

And!

Thanks to all that helped me out through this. Especially you, Tom. You're awesome.

I am gonna shut this down now.  The answer is no.  Kinda same deal as airsoft.  There is no way to tell from a distance that it has been deamed safe as there is no way to sheath it and the hotel will not be OK with this.  I am sorry, but please find another prop.  Toy would be great, wood is fine.

Ok, new question. I found a prop chainsaw on the web that looks kinda like a real one, but it is definitely fake. This would be acceptable, yes?

I am going to be my traditional, bloody nurse self.  Any chance you would "chainsaw" me for a picture?

Sure. Unfortunately the chainsaw in the link was almost $200 and I am poor...so that's is a no go. Instead I will be buying this.

Still better than a cardboard cut out. Like a 2-d one, not one that people bothered laminating and shaping ^^;;

I like it. Too bad about the other one, though. Perhaps a future conglomerate birthday present from your friends/family? I'd love it if I got that for my birthday :D

Chainsaw arived today! The picture was kind of misleading as it's really thin, but I think it'll work.

You could try to modify the one the just arrived to make it more like the RE4 one. (if you're a Dr.Salvador (name of the chainsaw Ganados)) Use tape, paint, fake blood, etc. ^^

I think it might be  alittle late to make modifications at this point, but I an always do them later. So...this is the first costume I've ever put together and I'm worried it's gonna be lame. Here goes.

DUDE. I forgot which game that was from... Resident Evil? Anywho, I was watching my friend play it, and he was all, "Watch this. There's this guy that's really hard to kill" so he tracked down that guy. He was all "Mi llama est loco!" or something (I don't speak Spanish). It was some freaky stuff. Holy god, that guy scared me.

He absolutely whoops Pyramid Head's patoot in the creep factor for me. Hands down. I love that guy.
