Pocky Flavors - 2008
« on: May 15, 2008, 09:50:25 am »
So this winter we saw the return of the Marble Pocky flavors and Reverse Pocky was reborn once again as Pari Po.

Now we've gotten the announcements for the new summer flavors!
http://pocky.jp/products/index.html

Coconut is back of course, but we also get a new flavor. This is the 4th year in a row that Glico has gotten us an exotic summer flavor, last year was Tahitian Vanilla and the year before was pineapple. Now we get Brazillian Pudding!

WTF..... really? Well, I'm interested at least!
Maybe I can get a friend to make me some.
http://www.recipezaar.com/187092

On the other updates, Dessert Pocky has gone over to having Orange and Banana flavors instead of the white and pink versions and they've added blueberry flavor!

The other intriguing thing is the Flower Pocky.
http://pocky.jp/products/kariyazaki/index.html
It's not quite as obvious what is going on here so I would appreciate some translation help from those of you who can actually read kanji.

Flower Pocky?  Let's see...

Yummy pocky made with plentiful ingrediants for luxurious taste.  Please enjoy Crush Pocky.

Almond: something about mild chocolate granules and almonds.  Made with plentiful amounts of ingrediants for a luxurious flavor.  Please look forward to it.

Rangudoshya?  (I suck at figuring out katakana sometimes):
Chrunchy mild chocolate ... and more of the same stuff about ingrediants.  Sorry, I can't figure out the key katakana phrase rangudoshyakukii.  The last part is likely cookie?

The very first kanji in the bit at the top is not in my dictionary at all.  I will take a stab at trying to translate something actualy useful tonight, if no one else gets to it first ;)

Well, there are several flavors of CRUSH Pocky. Almond, sugar cookie, and chocolate cookie. These sound like each of the flowers is a different flavor. They all probably have normal cookie sticks and milk chocolate with a different "crushed" ingredient mixed in. However, this theory does not explain the fourth box if each flower has a different flavor. Hmm.

It's really hard to see what's going on here.  The page for the pink carnation one just blathers on about the fleeting memory of first love and pink being the color of .. I think it says 'the happy times of a woman'.  It doesn't use, yanno, any food words.

On review there is probably two flowers for each flavor, look at the color of the box tops and compare them to the normal boxes.

Yeah, the top two flower boxes seem to be almond of some sort, judging by the layout on the front page and the katakana on the box.  For the bottom two are the 'rangudoshya' ones.

Oh, but the box on the right in this link: http://pocky.jp/products/crush/index.html says 'rangudoshya'.  So, the bottom two are ... whatever that is :)

That flavor has bits of crumbled sugar cookie in the chocolate.

rangudoshya
Hmmmm.... I wonder if that's a specific style of cookie.

This reminds Tom, I wanted to show you a picture I took here during KawaiiKon.  (photo coming as soon as final paper is done)

Oh, and as far as my pocky search over here, nothing new.  In fact, Uwajimaya probably has a much better selection than anything over here.

BTW everyone, FUBON Market on East 82nd has a TON of Thai Pocky. Mustash found this out awhile back.
They have Thai versions of Milk, Blueberry, and even Chocolate Banana!
That's right! Chocolate banana! It's not the swirl like in 2005, it's a banana coating on a chocolate stick.

However, since they're all Thai flavors they still have that waxy aftertaste.
Is it worth it? Pick some up and find out!

Pocky G has not been available for years. They discontinue and re-release flavors a lot though, so we may see it again. I'd rather have Pocky G than Gokuboso Pocky.

CHOCKY. GAG. There's a reason the stuff is so cheap.

I'll be bringing the Thai banana to the meeting. I still don't like the waxy aftertaste but the monkey on the box is pretty cute.
