It sounds like your internet issue may be a lack of a plan, or proper hardware for a home network.  It needn't be very complicated or complex, but it usually involves a dedicated networking device.  A router/switch that shares the connection your cable or dsl or FIOS provides (though some modems have that built in), and or provides a wireless access point.  These are some references that may help.
