Very cool, then.

Which of the following things do you like?

A. Being funky party people.
B. Dancing through the skies.
C. Putting your hands up. (This doesn't apply to being arrested, it only applies to having fun).
D. Seeing BRADIO use "Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu."
E. Trumpet playing bunnies.
F. An "explosive" scratch, resulting in the destruction of a billiard table.
G. ALL OF THE ABOVE!!

I'll take A, B & F. C "Put your hands up" could also sound like being arrested, so I'll skip that one.

A: Yes. Reciting fake Anglo-Saxon. 25 people in 1 dorm room playing the best drinking game ever: "Monty Python and the Search for the Empty Grail." SCA post-revels. Bar-hopping with Richard Biggs, Mira Furlan, and Jerry Doyle of Babylon 5.

B: Just .... yes...

F: Just saw "Color of Money" (Paul Neuman, Tom Cruise, 1986)
    "Kid's got a break like a SLEDGEHAMMER."

Explosive? This link mentions US Patent #50,359 for a 'new' billiard ball made of a lovely new material in its day: nitrocellulose. That was what film was made of before 'safety film' was invented. Hint: Before safety,  just like HMS Titanic was before "Let's make sure there are lifeboats for everybody," and "Let's make sure someone is monitoring marine radio frequencies ALL THE TIME."  Nitrocellulose is the key component of modern gunpowders, and well, somebody had to LEARN WHY. Yes, during one sales demo in the 19th century American West, the cueball blew like a hand grenade.

Gracious of you! :-)

I'd still only put ONE hand up - the other is controlling something like throttle or direction on some high-speed sports equipment, the yoke of a touchy aircraft, a grab-for-dear-life Jesus-handle, or the reins of an animal or even a team of animals - HYAA! (insert whip crack noise.) I'd want BOTH hands on any of my full auto or period firearms.

Oh yeah - one hand up and the other on the lanyard attached to a friction primer on a cannon! PARTY CANNON go BOOM!

NO safe spaces here:

Two of my uncles, now passed away, hit those beaches and were wounded that day.
I have an Iron Cross that one of them took off a German body washing in the surf when he made it to that beach.

Let's also remember the women who followed after the men cleared the beaches, the machine gun nests on the hills and cliffs nearby, and the innumerable landmines:

Special equipment was invented just for this operation, such as flail tanks for beating the ground to explode the mines. The explosion was harmless to the whirling lengths of chain. Soldiers and others could walk safely in the path cleared by the flails.

One of my uncles said that some tank crews actually chased after retreating Germans, with the flails.

Hey, everyone, big news from the movie world. Warner Brothers has bought the rights to make a movie based...on Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern novels. I hope and pray that in honor of the brilliant late authoress who created those wonderful novels that they maintain the spirit of what she had in mind.

Admiral (Michiel de Ruyter)
« Reply #21662 on: July 08, 2016, 11:21:18 am »
Speaking of movies, I saw the film "Admiral" (Dutch name: "Michiel de Ruyter") TWICE within a couple months.
For a square-rigger, age-of-sail, powder-and-shot movies it beats the 'Pirates of the Carribean' franchise hands down,
and also blows away 'Master and Commander."

- Unlike those ship-vs-ship movies, this is FLEET vs FLEET stuff; four replica maritime museum vessels were put to sea and then CGI takes over to duplicate these into MAJOR-MAJOR engagements.
- Johnny Depp is not in the movie.
- NOT a Disney Movie.
- Many scenes use the same traditional lighting of 'Dutch Masters' paintings;  indeed there are references to nearly a dozen classics. Some are reversed horizontally, like de Ruyter's house servant pouring milk next to a bunch of bread rolls ( = L/R mirror flip of Vermeer's 'The Milkmaid,') and just to make it TOTALLY obvious, about 50min into the movie there is an actor who looks a LOT like Rembrandt, but he's dressed in the canary tunic and hat of Rembrandt's 'Night Watch,' and he's carrying a copy of 'De Staalmeesters' partially wrapped in a sheet. I caught some Heyronimus Bosch references, too. NONE of this distracts from the main, serious story, but it's COOL to detect in passing.
- 9/10 rating for naval action scenes. The cameras take you below decks to show you what 12 - and 16-pound ball does, bouncing off overheads and frames. After some engagements, seamen (some are young boys, too) are wounded, bleeding on deck from hellacious hardwood splinters passing through arms and legs. Again, NOT a Disney Movie.
- Some of the Dutch sailors are Dutch Marines IRL.
- Costume porn: Brocades, lace, tatting, and corduroys abound. On the women, too.
- The Dutch speak Dutch, the English speak English, and the French speak French.
- The characters look reasonably like their historical equivalents, and the movie is about the political intrigues and military moves that forged the Anglo-Dutch wars. No one is trying to re-write history (as in, let's pretend the American Confederates had won at Gettysburg.)
- Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) plays King Charles II of England.

^ Leek-spin Whee! (Anyone remember that video?)

How to make money to afford your next con:

I shorted Deutsche Bank [ticker: DB] stock on 30-Aug-16.
I bought December 'puts' at $14.00. (Cost, $1.25 per contract)

DB went up for a little while and I was worried about losing money, and then
BAM! this morning the stock took a tumble and opened at like $13.38. <- Less than $14.
SOLD my puts at $1.55 each and I make $558.

If you went to my talk on candlestick trading at Kumoricon 2012 or 2013, today was an 'inverted hammer.'
On the craps table this is called "shooting from the don'ts!"

(I do that too.)

I'm happy that it's pumpkin season. I love Pumpkin everything!

Even better I can use up all those Starbucks cards I get throughout the year. I usually don't like thier coffee but I can get pumpkin lattes and muffins. It's a great way to save up some money for Christmas.

Fav muffins are poppyseed. Still enjoyed when the store near me released chocolate chip pumpkin muffins though. Tasted like pumpkin pie...travel sized!

As the con is fast approaching, I can see the fun differences between regular Halloween peeps and the con attendees.
Rather than debate over which costume to buy for one night, con-goers are hard at work finishing up the last touches for the cosplays they plan to wear across 3-4 straight days. Most Halloween costumes are meant to only hold up and be worn for the one day. The cosplays I've made/closet-built and the ones I've seen look like they can handle rugged everyday use. But then, why would one make something they don't feel comfortable in? Of course not many would want to wear their giant prop and body armor cosplays every day. ^^;
I can only look back and be thankful for wanting to join the army of tireless souls who make and wear the impossible.
many passers by might ask why we do it. It's simple...
Cos playa gotta do what cosplayers do.
Cosplays for Kumoricon 2014
Day 1 Fix-it Felix Jr. (w/ gold sledge)
Day 2 Hitmonchan and Kenny
Day 3 SS Future Trunks (DBZ)
Day 4 Jason Silverheart Pirate OC
Sonic The Hedgehog Kigurumi

At SC I didn't cosplay because I was to ugly. I regretted it because I. Issed out on a lot of fun. So I decided to do it for KC, and I am now regretting that as well. After an hour w/make I looked in the mirror and wanted to cry.

And I know " We all have imperfections" heh. 30+ yrs of harmful medication that destroys collagen and squinting from photophobia has really done a number. My once large and bright eyes are small, beady and trapped under strong eyelids that give me a Simpsons-esq profile and skin that looks like a chain smoking pug dog.

I'll still cosplay of course ( since I already made the costume) but ever since this invredib,y rude woman told me "Wow! You're really ugly!" I can no longer lie to myself, that I just have a harsh opinion of myself and no one else notices or cares. Everyone is aware that I look like fat-naked mole rat and is just being polite.

Once I had a lady waiting for the bus next to me wave at me to get my attention, and said to me "I'm so proud of you for being willing to wear knee-length skirts! With legs like those, I know I wouldn't be able to let them be seen in public. Good for you!"... it was pretty rough. I just have really big calves and stuff. It was so harsh. XD She looked so sweet too.

For me it is 30+ years in engineering and inspecting things that are wrong, fixing things that are not what they should be, and correcting my own errors. Judgement, judgement, judgment, and finding more that is incorrect or lacking than the aesthetic beauty of a thing well made - because that's why there is a job for you to do - fixing things that aren't good enough.
These have cut severe lines into my face and a 'resting scowl.' I am trying to re-learn to smile by pulling the center of my upper lip down with my finger while pulling up elsewhere with my facial muscles. Maybe it's working, but I am very fortunate to be married a long time to a great woman who remembers our sunnier times together.
This is why I am counting by days until the time the job will end, especially now with  'continuous improvement' management, which means nothing will ever be good enough for anyone to really feel it in themselves to say 'thanks for a job well done.' for me, at least I know when it will be OVER.

Once I had a lady waiting for the bus next to me wave at me to get my attention, and said to me "I'm so proud of you for being willing to wear knee-length skirts! Yikes - that was one hell of a back-handed compliment.

We got one of those while we were in Japan.

We were at Tokyo Tower, and I explained to a bunch of Austrian tourists (in whatever was left of my highschool German)
where the subway station was across the street from us, and which line and which stop to get off at for their next destination.

So one of the guys goes: "Say, is that your wife? She's pretty enough to be mistaken for an Austrian."

Oh, gee, thanks.

Okay Kumoricon goers gather round becasue I have something to say. Yesterday I got back from watching Doctor Strange. My thoughts on the Movie version of Marvel COmic's Sorcerer Supreme can be summed up like this, "Mind=Blown!". For an avant-garde style movie it had a story I understood, characters who could be related to. Marvel Studios has captured the essence of the Marvel Comics superhero. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt go see Doctor Strange.

I have been waiting fo the movie world to run out of zombies, vampires, andcomic book and cartoon characters that were created decades ago by other people, and see what they could do with their own talent pool starting from scratch.

Then I was at a part Saturday in which one of the guests said that American movies aren't made for American audiences anymore, because they're shooting for bigger sales in China and India.

Anyways, one of my long standing fave movies of all time is "Das Boot" (1981)

U-571 totally sucks compared to this one.

A more recent fave of mine is "Admiral" (Michiel de Ruyter) AWESOME SQUARE-RIGGER COMBAT
AND NO JOHNNY DEPP OR ANGELINA JOLIE OR VIN DIESEL

I also bought the Blu-Ray of another 'Admiral' movie, but this was medieval Korean vs Japanese:

Totally awesome.

BTW if you want to LEGALLY download (for keeps) expire-copyright and other public-domain works, dig into archive.org.

I recently save two Jimmy Stewart movies "Bend on the River" (filmed mostly on Mt Hood, Oregon) and "The Far Country" (supposed to be Skagway, AK and Dawson City, Canada but was actually filmed in/near Jasper, Alberta)

Hey, everyone, it's been a while I have some very big news to share with everyone here.

First a little story. A friend of mine who attends Anime conventions introduced me a while back to a published Science Fiction author by the name of Martin Schiller. Not sure if anyone here has heard of him but I've read some of his work and he is a good author. Anyway we've been working on Shijak, my short story, for some time.

I am pleased to announce that my story Shijak has been officially published on Kindle as part of Martin Schiller's anthology novel "A Kinder, Greener Vampire and other stories." and even better still in January of 2017 the hard copy of the book will be released to the public.
After all these years I've finally become a published writer, and let me just say it was quite surpriusing because it seemed to good to be true,  and I am absolutely tickled about it.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday I present for everyone to listen to arguably one of the best songs ever produced by Irish Rock band U2. surprising really that an Irish rock band actually wrote a song about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Here is Pride (In the name of love).

It's October 10th. Time to remember and OLD but FUN anime nicknamed "TEN-TEN!"
