Cosplay Instruction?
« on: July 16, 2007, 08:23:51 pm »
Anyone interested in teaching me the ropes of cosplay? I want to make a Kazuya Mishima costume from Tekken 5 for Kumoricon but I've decided Im gonna need some help. Like where/what to buy, sewing, how to size something to a person, etc. Just the basics I guess. I could compensate you for your time, although I'm not made of money so it wouldn't be much... If anyone is interested in giving me a huiding hand, leave a message at www.myspace.com/deadhandcomics, I check that more often than this board.

You can learn a lot about the basics of sewing on various sewing related sites - look at the web sites of pattern companies (simplicity, burda, mccall's, vogue), or check out the American Sewing Guild (http://www.asg.org) and the Home Sewing Association (http://www.sewing.org) for links to online sewing lessons.

Another resource is the Greater Portland Area Costumers Guild (http://www.robewarriors.com) - they meet on Tuesday nights at B Sharp Fabrics in North Portland on Lombard. The members know a lot about sewing and can provide advice and assistance as needed. Attempting to learn everything about sewing on your first costume is difficult, but not impossible. Try to see if you can find a pattern that's very close to the shape you need for your costume. As long as you're reasonably close to a standard size (that is you can walk into a store in the mall and easily find clothing that fits you well) you won't have to do too much fitting of the pattern.

For places to go to purchase stuff, there's JoAnn's fabrics, Fabric Depot, B Sharp Fabrics, and many other stores with sewing supplies all over the Portland area. Open your yellow pages or search the internet.  :)

Good luck!!

Thanks for the advice! Yea, I should fit most standard size stuff, I'm 5'10" and 163 lbs with a 32? waist I believe. I went to the JoAnn's Fabric in Hillsboro near Cornell street and they helped me a little but they were really busy and didn't have any fabric that was going to work. I'll try some other fabric stores tomorrow perhaps. I'll definitely check out those links and see what I can learn from them. Thank you very much for your help!
