* Sakura Festival at Uwajimaya, April 21st *

I got this from the Yuuyake Shimbun:

Uwajimaya Plaza, Portland's largest Asian grocery and gift store, holds its Sakura Festival every year. The festival is free and everyone in the community is invited to come and experience the music, entertainment and great food this exciting event offers, so mark April 21st on your calender.

---

I'm planning on going, and possibly wearing my Alice costume. :3
Anyone else going? and is there going to be a K-con booth?

Excellent!

Yes, Kumoricon will be there and will have a booth.  If anyone wants to help out at the booth, and you haven't talked to Antares yet, please pm her with your info!

We have quite a few people that are going to be there helping out that day, but the more the merrier.

I've got tons of free time on my hands, so I'll definitely (at least) be there just to enjoy the festivities, if not to help out at the table.

Uwajimay is old school for me baby.  Me and Leshy ran the booth last year along with so many others like Hawkeye, Darklighter, and the giant banna.... and it was our first promotional event for Kumoricon.

I am so going to be helping with this event too!

Yay the Sakura Festival! It's that time again! =3 I'm hoping to go again this year. I'll be going in cosplay, either as Shadow or Matt from Death Note. (Depends on if I can get my Matt costume done or semi-done in time) I'll be bringing some friends too!

I'm going on vacation for awhile to a place where many would probably beat me with their computers should I say where.  (In advance: no, not Japan)

Thanks to everyone - Vallie or I will be contacting you soon to nail down details. And we hope to see everyone there (this is a freaking awesome FREE event, and a great store - if you haven't been to Uwajimaya before, this is the time to go!!!) Also, I believe you will be able to register at this event, so stop by if you haven't registered, and you won't be going to SakuraCON in Seattle (where you can also register on-site).

I claim this as the new PockyClubMeetUpThread!!
Garbleyargleugrrrbllllah!!!

So uh, yeah. I'm a little upset but no matter.

I will be there to help at the Kumoricon Booth and this will be the new meeting for Pocky Club this month. I'm going to be giving out forms at the table when I'm there and also making deliveries if any are requested. Please show up in costume* so you can make deliveries too!

It will be like the club has an unlimited supply of Pocky with the store right there! Hopefully they'll have gotten this years shipment of Murasaki Pocky by then!

Someone please bring a digital camera so we can document all of our fun!

*or your loli clothes, which aren't costumes of course. ^_^;
please don't hurt me!

I utterly failed at getting my Matt cosplay together in time (and I'll just be getting back from vacation the Monday night before), so I'll be going as Shadow again. ^-^; I'm looking forward to it though!

I got nothing against real cameras. I really like hard copies.

I'm just less likely to GET copies of film prints.

Then again, I still haven't gotten the pictures I took with Prog's camera at the last con....

An Address for the Halloween store? Hmmmm......

Give me ten minutes with googlemaps and I'll have not just the address but directions from Uwajimaya.

What I tell ya?

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=10500+SW+Beaverton+Hillsdale,+Beaverton,+OR&daddr=11465+SW+Canyon+Rd,+Beaverton,+OR&layer=&sll=45.499008,-122.791185&sspn=0.017146,0.052185&ie=UTF8&z=15&om=0

Halloween Warehouse
11465 SW Canyon Rd, Beaverton, OR
Open Saturday afternoons

Stage West/Costume Avenue
12760 SW 1st St, Beaverton
Might not be open on weekends but is a very good location for stage type costumes. I got my fake mustache here and some cheap white gloves.

Schedule from the Uwajimaya flier I got!

9:00 am:             Issoan Tea Festival
10:00am:            Ecole de Budo Raji Martial Arts
10:30am:            Obukan Kendo Martial Arts
11:00am:            A Key-kyo Japanese Band
12:00am:            Monmouth Taiko
1:00pm:              Sahomi Tachibana Dancers
1:30pm:              Sheridan Japanese School Taiko
2:00pm:              Koto Performance by Mitsuki Dazai
2:30pm:              US Shisekai Martial Arts
3:00pm:              Monmouth Taiko
4:00pm:              Japan Traditional Karate-Do
4:30pm:              Pacific Martial Arts

I highly suggest staying to watch some of the performances and not just visiting with us at the booth and pigging out on shaved ice. I'm for sure going to watch the Taiko performance at least once.

Also, some of you might remember that A Key-kyo actually performed at Kumoricon last year, so give them a shot too (I wasn't at the concert so I can't say much else).

That graphic cracks me up Fudokage.

I've been looking through some of the Sakuracon pictures to find people on our boards. Mostly because I'm eager to find out what happened to the Pocky Club members that were going to be making deliveries up there. All I have so far is Princess.

yep, that's me!

Hmm I'm not positive what I'll be wearing yet.... If it's cold, expect the balzacket I'm known for. Definitely tight black jeans with skelegloves out the back pocket. If it's warm I'll be wearing a t-shirt, not sure what yet. But with that description, it should be easy to find me.

Oh ya, to make things easier, I have like one strip of bleached hair in the front, and the rest of my hair is black.

I'm wondering if I should rent a bigger car than what I own. Cram a lot more people comfortably in a SUV than my little Honda. My Little Honda, sounds like a kiddy movie.

Just let me know y'all which events we don't want to miss. I can pick-up anywhere. Especially as Lit lives between me and Eugene, sort of.

Let me know how many will be needing a ride from Eugene and points north, including Salem, etc. Soon. May rent a minivan. Could we look more nerdy?

Hmmm..... where's that website....

Sweet! Live show! And nothing crazy like "18 and Over Night".

The live show at Clinton Street will not be a problem for minors. Seriously. I went and checked their schedule even, when they have an 18-or-older show they let you know. c'mon guys! Pleeeease lets go see Rocky?
I'd rather us switch because it's a midnight show rather than switch because we have minors in the group.

300 is a good alternate though. Maybe I'll bring the book for you guys to look at earlier in the day. We can go see it at the sweet Century theater

Hmm.... What time should Pocky Club have their meeting?
I don't want to conflict with Taiko or Kendo.

that sounds like the long and short of it

So far it seems like just 4 going from down south up north. I know you are all heartbroken about not going up there in a Cadillac. Oh wait I said minivan didn't I? Well, I am so glad we won't need one of those.

But if no one tells me they need a ride from anywhere along the I-5 from Eugene to Uwajimaya real soon, I won't be able to make a reservation for a rental car big enough for all of us.

Hey, sure.
Pocky Club Events are partially counting towards volunteer hours so I don't want people thinking that just cuz they go to movie with me and some Clubbers they're racking up a free T-shirt.

All the meeting will be is a few of us taking over a corner of the deli and trying the newest flavors while we go over stuff for our panel. You're welcome to hang out with us and come to whatever movie we go to. Especially if you have a ride.

We still have room for you if you want to join after all.

Are a lot of you wearing cosplay? I think I'll forego it this time, I don't have wigs for either of my two costumes. I had the right hair the first time I wore them.

Might possibly do something schoolgirlish, I wanna whip up a pair of loose socks though. I dunno yet... augh for indecision.

I've already seen it, but if that's what some of you are planning, I'm with you.

TONIGHT WE DINE IN APPLEBEES!

I don't know why, but that seriously made me laugh out loud when I read it.

I'll probably wear a cosplay..though I don't know if I'll wear Greed or Chloe yet.. o.o

Argh I wanna go, but I'm going to a wedding shower, that day. The actual times during the day don't conflict, but I dunno how I'd get to where I needed to go afterwords. Dx

And if I was dressing up, it'd be weird to show up to a wedding shower in Lolita or something, omg. :XD

~Wait...  I didn't see it was the Portland Uwajimaya...  Maybe I can still make it.  Anyone have some directions from I-5 S, or good bus routes?

It's at the Beaverton Uwajimaya. :3 It's fun! I hope lots of people come in cosplay - if you're thinking about it, go for it! You won't be the only one. ;D

as for directions, I took the max & bus there once (took a while). I don't remember exactly though. ;; check the tri-met site perhaps?

Google maps

Tomthefanboy posted this on an earlier page.

Tri-met from Union Station to Uwajimaya is: http://www.trimet.org/go/cgi-bin/itin.pl

I hope that helps.   1. Walk 0.28 mile southeast from Union Station Amtrak Depot (800 NW 6th Ave) to NW 3rd & Flanders (Stop ID 12777)
   2. 11:32 a.m. Board 35 Greeley to Portland
which continues as 35 Macadam to Oregon City TC See footnote
   3. 11:41 a.m. Get off at SW Market & 2nd (Stop ID 3760) See footnote
   4. 11:47 a.m. Board 54 Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy to Beaverton TC See footnote
   5. 12:11 p.m. Get off at SW Beaverton- Hillsdale & 107th
   6. Walk 0.1 mile east to 10500 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy

Travel time: 51 minutes (including 12 minutes walking and 6 minutes waiting)

Look for a shorter waiting time.

Fares: Adult All Zone ($2.00), Youth/Student ($1.35) or Honored Citizen ($0.85) Where to buy

Tri-met's web-site won't save. I hope this isn't too much.

EDIT: I put some tags on the naked link that was breaking the tables. - Guspasho
Have Fun

Well, it looks like it'll cost me almost $60 round trip, plus it'll be close to two hours each way...  so I probably won't make it if I can't get the car for the day, so I'll try my best on that option!  Y'all cross your fingers for me!

For those of you thinking of coming from the Sea-tac area, while I don't want to discourage you from coming out here, I had always assumed that the Seattle Uwajimaya would have a similar event at the same time. Anyone know?

Ok I'm officially going now! X3 I'll be going with State Alchemist, my other friend I went to K-con with, and my friend who's an exchange student from Taiwan. (She's really looking forward to this!) I'm really excited! From what I understand we'll be getting there pretty early.

Isn't it going to be rainy this weekend? I hope not though. ;-; I don't know whether or not I'll cosplay if it is.

Hmmm.... so if Neko and friends aren't having a big lolita party then we can move the Pocky Club up a little bit.

Let's say our meeting will be at 1:00pm, just after the Taiko drums.

Neko I have the forms that you'll need for the panel and a budget request form. Do you guys need more than one of them?

Mm. I dunno. I think that we'll be making all the food and unless you want to re-emburse us again for gift bags (door prizes and outfit prizes) and food stuff, I think we'll be okay.

Is it possible to have a projector hooked up in the lolita how to? I'd want to show examples and have pictures running the length of the panel.

Projector and screen and computer will be items that you need to list on the form itself. I'm pretty sure that we have them, I just don't know if they'll be in your panel room.

That is something for me to discuss with the Programming officials. If we're lucky we won't have to run the gear all over the con like we did last year.

Well, 18 and over can be staff.
I think anyone can be a volunteer, you're not going to be able to do much if your under 13 but I haven't seen any age restrictions on volunteers, just what they're allowed to do. Heck, 5 year olds could technically do street team with adult supervision.

I'm planning to go in order to meet Pocky Club people for the first time, as I'm pretty sure I'll be around these parts come September.  Well, not neccessarily meeting all of them for the first time, as I already know Tom.

But anyways, I'll be there to hang out/meet people/etc., as I might be heading over to Halloween Outlet at some point to look for a costume piece.  I'd come in cosplay, but my options are limited to: a) Excel Saga's Pedro, which isn't all that much cosplay.  or b) Generic You're Under Arrest-inspired police officer.

Regardless, I shall be there!

yeah yeah yeah,
You haven't gotten to "postive thinking" and "Consensual Reality" in your psych classes yet have you?

It's not going to rain us out.

BTW, I want to get some pictures for my next Pocky Article. Think you can bring your camera to help me out Mustash?

(I guess you were bringing your camera anyway, but could you specifically help me out with this project?)

I'm going to be doing an article on Pocky and there's some things that I just can't scan. Namely the Pocky itself. Just come prepared and you'll see what I mean.

I'll be coming in with Jaz and Chris around 9 o'clock. I don't have a bus pass to ride in with Vallie.

that is, if Chris will still give me a ride.

Hi there,

I'm here to pass on a message from VonDan. He says that he can't make it to the Sakura festival on Saturday.

This is because he is still moving shop, and his entire shop is currently in the back of a truck, unable to be unpacked. He is also without phone or internet until he gets moved in. He sends his apologies.

I'm not sure what time I'll be there now, but we'll be wandering around. I won't be cosplaying but I'm still kinda dressing up. If you see the girl in the blindingly pink outfit (inspired by the Strawberry Chocolate cell phone and in homage to the incredibly awesome Hello Kitty) come over and say hi.

I just wish I had some cat ears to complete it.

Whee!  Finally back home, even though I left the fest 3 hours ago...  I hate having to drive long distances T.T  Anyway, it was lots of fun meeting everyone, even though it was so rainy!  Funny story...  I was still wearing my Prince of Tennis cosplay, and stopped in BK on the way home for a bite to eat.  The girl at the register looked at me, and she asked "Did you just go jogging?"  I just told her no and ordered my food...

Pi and Jaybug looked most awesome in their dress clothes....I was quit impressed. :) You guys almost make us seem reputable. :D

I got some pics, too, but mine will go into the gallery. If any of you would like your pictures to go into the main page gallery, let Jeff know. He'd be happy to have the extra photos to beef up the site. :)

Huge thanks to Vallie and the Registration Crew for their efforts today.  We were able to secure 21 registrations in the pouring rain. Our outreach is really paying off! Total pre-reg count (apx. 400) is now nearly the same as the number of attendees in 2003, with near a quarter of registrants signing up at events! Keep up the good work, everyone.

I can't wait to throw this party. :)
You'll be loved, you'll be loved, like you never have known. When memories of me will seem more like bad dreams. Just a series of blurs, like I never occurred. Someday, you will be loved.

I was there, but with the Sakura con group. I dont think I ran into any of you.

I was in my half-assed Renji costume. I didnt bring the whole thing because the only reason I cosplaid at all is because the shinigami outfits are traditional enough and i didnt want to wear anything too outragious.

Im really glad I went. I had a lot of fun even if the weather is STILL crappy and depressing  Im convined were not going to get a summer this year)

Also, I got the band Bless Main to autograph my Ramen card. ^^ Im not turning it in now.

Heeeyyyy...were you the guy with the sonic hat that we talked to at the booth for a while?
I was with the Kairi and the harajuku girl.
Haha ya I think so. You girls with the cool boots, right?

...I slept in until 7:00 PM (I HATE DOING THAT!!!) I also had no way to get there and forgot about the event until 5 hours or so before it. Sucks too since it would have been nice to see some of you more familiar people and meet a few new ones.

There definitely needs to be more events that the K-Con people can get together at... Especially in Portland considering the vast scope of cultural events that happen here.

Agreed! The fest was pretty sweet. I saw quite a few people who I suspected were from the forums, but I only actually talked to Pieisexactly three. But, despite that, it was still cool to be in the same place as others you know are from the forums. I'm not sure if there are any events coming up, other than monthly meetings, but we should attempt at more "meet n greets".

i wanted to take pictures of other cosplayers ... but alas, i was too shy. >x< ~sigh~

So I noticed!  I wouldn't have figured you for the shy type, Totemo.  However, I figure you might feel at a disadvantage with more of us being able to recognize you than vice versa.

It was very nice to meet you, and I hope you like the little bunny!

it was real nice meeting you too! (i love the bunny!!!)
i was also there with friends (who aren't on the forums) and i felt like i was taking their time by talking to other people ... ;; ah ~

and i agree, we should have another meet-up .... but in nicer weather. please!

It was really cool seeing you all there!  I was the girl in the Serenity Sweatshirt freezing her fingers off.  ^_^

The huge mobs of people surrounding the booth really got us noticed by Uwajimaya.  One of their people organizing the event came up to talk to me towards the end to just let me know how suprized they were at how many people were gathered at our little tent through out the event.

Just goes to show you.  Bad weather cannot stop fandom.

It was good to see all you people, even if I didn't come up and say hello, or do cosplay, unless Battou in a suit would be what you'd call me, except I haven't broken my nose.

Figures the picture of me is rotten! I have no patience for digital!

Was in a bit of paradise wandering around the grocery store. I wish I knew how to cook Asian dishes more than I do. That and live too far away to go home with that nice seafood.

I like a general meet-up in nice weather. I hope we don't have to wait until August. Rose Festival anyone, or is that a little late?
Have Fun

jaybug - i apologize for not recognizing you the first time! x___x i need to work on that...anyway, you looked impressive in that suit. :3

as for a general meet-up (perhaps we should start a thread for this), how about a picnic/potluck at a park...? :)

I'm really glad I got to see all of you guys! It was a lot of fun!

If the weather had been better we might've all gotten to socialize more at the booth instead of running for cover all the time.

Pocky Club managed to actually get a couple things planned! Yay!

FYI, the next Pocky Club Meeting will be at noon on May 6th. This is the day of the Envelope Stuffing at the hotel and will basically be our lunch break time.

It'll be a quick meeting for me to show people the hotel space and make sure you guys know how to maneuver the halls. If we get a camera there it will also be a glomping primer so I can get some pictures for my upcoming article on glomping.

sweet it works

yay meetings it funny how these event like sakura fest seem almost like a family reunion in a way
cuz just like those events you have the family (or friends) you reconize
"hi havent seen you in a few weeks"
the family you kinda know
"hi yes great auntie of course i remember you from that time i was 3.."
and the family who knows you but you just don't know
"hi wait who are you and why are you hugging me?

Hooray!!!  Leashy liked our cookies!!!  Would you mind if we posted your pictures of us on our webpage?

Of course you can!  They are for everyone to enjoy!

Ok seriously guys, we need to see if we can get the Taiyaki people to come to Kumoricon!  It probably violates some fire code but they would make a killing if they came!

I think they were associated with the Japanese restaurant, I saw a poster on front of the Taikyaki cooker that had the same name as the restaurant anyway.

It would be amazing if we could get them to come...  even if we had to put them out in front of the hotel somewhere I'm sure they'd have a continual line.

Just a reminder, if you think that any of the people who were at Sakurafest should be at Kumoricon then email your ideas to relations@kumoricon.org since that is the person in charge of such things.

It would be cool if they were there, but there would probably have to be like three different stations so as the same two people wouldn't get completely swamped every second of the weekend.

A positive idea though.

I'm imagining a wall of takiyaki, with like two booths per flavor.

Since it's begun to be an issue on at least four different fronts I think that next year the convention should look into gettingthe insurance and permits for having cooking on site as an official part of the convention. Like Nekopan Bakery and the cooking panel and a waffo cart.

If only we could get a convention space with some open air room for people to operate. Cooks in the vendor area would lack ventilation and that's not right. Hmmmm..... waht a puzzle.

You know, if the stand was owned by the people at the restaurant AT Uwajimaya then it probably means that you can actually get the taiyaki at the restaurant itself.

This is a good reason for people to give the place a try when they're in the area.

Woot! Woot! Woot!!!!

Nice meeting y'all! What a fun "family reunion" type event!

I checked the menu, and Hakatamon doesn't serve taiyaki at the restaurant.  They just make it for the festivals, which means they won't make it again until the Hawaiian festival in August (there's a couple small festivals before then, but I don't think they usually cook it at the small ones).

I'm sure they could make a killing if they had it on their regular menu, though.  I wanted to get some at the festival, but the line was always too long....sure, I probably could have used my sway as an Uwajimaya employee to have some set aside that I could pick up later, but that would feel unfair, especially with all the people waiting out in the rain.

But good to know anyway, for the Taiyaki.

hmm I wonder if you could use this:  http://cgi.ebay.com/Old-Mountain-Cast-Iron-Perch-Pan-Fish-Bread-Pan-Great_W0QQitemZ190102375094QQihZ009QQcategoryZ976QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

That looks just like what they used at Uwajimaya. I think, after you put the filling into one half, you take another half, not quite completely cooked, and put it onto the half still cooking, letting the uncooked dough act as the glue. Just hope you have the correct half lined up. Otherwise you end up with a mixed up Pisces!
