I'm having a bout of cosplay cold feet. Help=good
« on: January 09, 2007, 02:52:29 pm »
Okay so I was hell-bent on going as Eureka from Eureka seveN. But now I'm having second thoughts. My reasons are:

-It would be VERY expensive. Haircut+dye (a good job like I want could cost up to 100 bucks :c), Contacts ($200 from the guy I wanted to get them from), Not to mention the entire outfit ($50-100 :c)
- I always feel awkward when I wear revealing clothes, and I dunno if I could pull off the Eureka look, I have such long legs and her dress is so short ->_<-
-I don't know where I could get the boots for the outfit, and I'm not skilled enough to make them myself >_>;;
-I COULD go as L (cause I'm cheap) but...so many other poeple are going as him it would be kinda lame :C

So, I've posted some pictures on here and if you haven't seen them I have a photobucket album:

http://s32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/Debussys_lover/Haircut%20Flavor/

Any suggestions would be great c:

...yes

well then...carry on!
Someday...I'll get around to you.

My post went to hell! :(

OK, I couldn't get through that link you posted so I googled the series.

The contacts are going to be expensive no matter what.
The hair you could probably do with a wig for a reasonable ammount. You can also keep your hair in shape for an L cosplay underneath!
The costume will be worth commisioning, all my tailor made costumes have been worth the trouble (I still wear my Average Joe's shorts every now and then).

As far as being body shy, that's the biggest hurdle. It's best to start with costumes you don't have to constantly adjust to be decent. Even if it's not accurate, lower the hem of the skirt an inch or two to give yourself peace of mind. If you're still embarrassed then you can use flesh-tone shear fabrics to cover yourself up. I've seen a lot of the Sailor Stars do this to great effect. It looks good in photos and you don't have to show skin!

i think if you're willing to spend that much, do it.
it will be worth it when you get there. i bet a lot of people will take pictures of you. ;D i would! it'll be a fun experience.

if it's too much, i say opt for an easier or cheaper cosplay.
since it's 3 days, you could probably cosplay L for one of them. :)

Gahhh my message was sent to hell too...because I took too long writing it *unhappy* well I'll try to remember what I wrote before. something along the lines of:

Whoops! I'm stupid...in my first post I forgot to actually get to the POINT of my entire topic (lily=muy muy senile)

The point was: I was wondering if anyone thought I looked like someone they had seen in an anime/manga.

Here's a picture of me:

Awww emo-tastic (but only in appearance!!! I swear! haha)

here's pics of Eureka: (just in case you were curious)
purple contacts are hard to find >_>;;
rather short skirt! :O

Okay I think I remembered everything this time...>_>;;;

Looking at the photo comparisons, I think you would have no problem cosplaying Eureka. Just in facial structure alone you already resemble her quite a lot. And all the financial issues could potentially be handled, so the only major issue would be your discomfort in the clothing. Like was earlier mentioned, it is possible to alter the outfit to your bodytype without actually changing the costume. (Like the aspect ratio of a photo, you can resize it, but if you keep the photo's aspect ratio the same, the photo won't appear warped ^_^ Sorry.......photogeek here.)

Anyway, it is definitely okay to hem the dress/skirt/whatever to your comfort. The last thing you would want to do is be stuck at the con, having your costume be the only thing holding you back from having a blast because you have to keep pulling something or stretching something, etc.

And, yeah, financially, I say we start a "Get Lit_of_Eureka to the Con" fund! I'll start the donations at $75! ^_^

If anyone else thinks that is a good idea, or if you like the idea Lit_of_Fey, let's work it out. Let's get her to the Con!!

I've not seen the show..but I would say you could cosplay as her pretty easily. I'd definitely do a wig for the hair, though. Because you'll be bleaching then dyeing your hair to get that color.

Check out http://www.cosplaylab.com/proshop/cosmeticlens.asp for the contacts. I am considering buying the violet ones for my Chloe crossplay (and my Greed, even though he has purple cateyes).

And the skirt..make it longer to your preference.. No one is going to notice, as long as it's not way too long.

And as for choosing other characters, one thing I will say is that you certainly don't need to look like the character you're cosplaying. I don't look anything like a girl and I've crossplayed as one (granted next time there will be makeup involved to make me look more like one, but that's beside the point). It's all about what you want to do.

What are some of your favorite animes? Going by that makes it a lot easier to pick characters to cosplay.

@ Trumby: Thanks! that site is great! I already found some contacts that would work! ^.^ and they're not $200 dollars! *yay*
One question though: Have you ever ordered off of there before? I just like to get at least one reference when I'm buying something online, especially something like contacts X3

Oh and another thing. I WAS planning on dying my hair for Eureka, but you guys are right and getting a wig would probably be better {especially if I'm doing an L cosplay hee ;D} And my hair is sexful now so I think I'll just go get it cut again (for the part of L....and my life) up at that salon I go to in portland (ahhh Luna=goodness you should go to her! :D) BUt anyways...I'm rambling >_>;;; What are some GOOD wig sites? because that's why I didn't want to do a wig in the first place is because alot of the time they look bad >_<;;; and since I'm a cosplay n0000bbbz0r pointing me in the right direction would be nice heeh :3

www.amphigory.com and www.cosworx.com

I've ordered from both sites and have gotten really nice wigs, they're just wavy when you get them, like any wig you get off the internet but it's easy enough to striaghten with hot water.

amphigory just takes a little while longer to ship out, but I think it also may be less expensive

Alright C: thanks!  Lol if I order I'll probably come rushing back here when I get them going "AHHHMG!!! I dun no how to straighten them!!1 *whine* *snivvel* Bleahahaghgh"
Oo Amphigory seems to have lots of good! and cosworx has some boots that I might be able to work with!!!!  White gogo boots = closest thing I've seen so far >_<;;; And they're not like seven inches tall!!! (w00t)

Hmm looking at one of the bluish (and medium length) wigs, makes me wonder if I might be able to do a cosplay of the "younger" Eureka (she was sort of...discovered...not really born...she was found buried in the ground >_>...) but here's a picture:...well pictures:

<---longish!

<---less revealing and considerably easier to make :D!

tell me whatcha think! ^.^

OH! edit lol:
here's the wig that made me think of this:

and here's a wig I'd get in a "sky blue" If I did the original.

the younger version is really cute too! so it's your choice! Both wigs look like they would work perfectly so it's all about your personal preference..

haha, wig striaghtening tutorial is here: http://www.pettingzoowigs.com/wigtutorial_straightening.html

First of all, I really like the idea of either costume - the "younger" Eureka would be unique! Cost is always a factor, but also consider that you might use the items like the wig and contacts again (other cosplays, halloween etc.)  Keep your eyes peeled for boots at Goodwill that maybe you could paint (unless you enter the cosplay contest - I never do so I don't know if that's against the rules. I just dress up, and most of my costumes are "recycled" like the parka-turned-chuunin vest below). Longer skirt + nylons is totally acceptable. You could make the skirt longer, then pin it up to see how it looks / feels to walk around in, too.

Just my 2 cents!

No problem, glad to help. I haven't personally ordered from them, though I know people who have. I will probably be ordering those violet contacts here in the next month or so (so I have them for Sakura-con), though.

I personally bought mine from Amphigory and the wig I got was perfectly straight. And I actually bought that same blue wig Lit is referring to (Kankelon Beast, or something of that nature), only in fuschia! ^-^

Ooh, Japanese. I'm taking Japanese right now, and it is a great program. One warning, though: if you have taken any japanese courses in high school, this program's teaching method will most likely be the completely inverted method of those classes. It is still really great, and really easy to learn the way they teach it at PSU, it just has the potential to be a bit bewildering if you have taken any previous classes.

All that said, though......it's awesome. Native Japanese speakers as teachers, yay!

In addition to what Mr. Mustashe said, cosplaying at Kumoricon is naturally going to be less intimidating once you get there, for most people anyway, because it isn't like getting on a stage and performing while everyone else watches, nor is it like being the only one wearing a pink cowboy hat at a party where nobody else is, and they all are just staring at you. It's Kumoricon, hundreds of people are cosplay, as well, everyone there for the fun and for the preferred company of others there. It's a really welcoming atmosphere, and anybody that would even pass judgement on others' costumes in a demeaning manner, well, their opinion can't stand up to the overall consensus and warmth of the rest of the Con-goers.

Yeah, a really welcoming place, I've found it to be.

well I'm not so shy that I'm like Hinata level lol, It's just that being a very tall girl (5'10") I've always felt awkward and weird in short dresses (without wearing something like leggings or whatever underneath.) But since I DO have some (very basic) sewing skills I can probably make the dress a bit longer if need be.

Lol I Love performing and doing theatre too :D I'm going to be in "Fiddler on the Roof" at the Pleasant Hill Community Theatre in July and I'm way excited about it C:

Lol you posted something while I was responding to Mustash X3
Yeah, haha you guys are trying to convince someone who wears rainbow-flavored legwarmers and frilly aprons to school to be comfortable in clothes. I'm actually not shy, I've just got an overdeveloped sense of self-preservation -looks around room warily- and lots of paranoia and mistrustfullness that makes people think I'm either
1. A psycopath murderer.
2. Inconceivably shy.
3. Stuck up.
4. or just plain weird.
And since I can be judgemental sometimes, I'm always pondering how people are judging me.
BUT! judging from the acceptance and good-natured ness of here it seems that I won't have to worry about that ^.^
Haha this gives me the same impression that the Oregon Country Fair does (countRy not county) Large gatherings of people who come to a place for the same purpose generally turn out feeling happy and well I've found ^.^
lol darn it! you posted again while I was writing!!!! X3 I guess I'll have to type faster.

hahahahaha, look at me with my fast typing! ^_^

But, that is really good. You didn't strike me as the shy or withdrawn type, but I thought I'd throw my advice-in-a-bottle out there while the waves were still kickin' enough to carry it. (Wow......weeeeeeird analogy.....hmmm, lol)

I'm the same way, though, I used to be super shy and withdrawn, but with maturity that turned more into a cautionary habit, like you said pretty much. "Better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove them right", as the phrase goes.

Haha this is kinda off topic but it reminds me of what that one radio guy says:
"Life is hard. But it's harder when you're stupid."
That always make me feel less evil for all my stupid-people fueled rage.

Haha there was this one girl who I was doing a play with, and she was like "I regret not talking to you before this! haha I thought you were so scary!"
and I was like

"WhuaaaaaAAATTTTt???!?" :O

It's funny how there's always something very different between the way you see yourself and the way other people see you.

Okay so, I found these BITCHIN' headphones that look EXACTLY like the ones Eureka is wearing in the "younger" version ( Maybe the creators of eureka seven used that brand of vintage 70's headphones as inspiration? they used alot of other 70's things in there X3 ), And I REALLY want to do that one.
But I don't really have any experience sewing clothing or anything, I'm not very good blah blah blah
I just don't know how to fix that problem.
Sorry if this seems weird i'm a bit tired and in a haze.
Someday...I'll get around to you.

Well with as many people on here who cosplay, I'm sure you will have no problem finding someone who wouldn't mind lending you their sewing skills. I would, but I don't have any. I'm trying to learn, but haven't quite got it down yet.

But, yeah, I say you should go for it. The younger Eureka would be really cute, and if you found some nice headgear, it's totally meant to be, maaan.....*slips off into daydreamy haze*

Wait.....what was I talking about........oh, yeah....Tigers, man....

I mean, *cough, cough* Eureka costume. Yeah, you should go for it.
And, if nothing else, there is no shame in having a parent help you sew, heh Plenty of people do that....*points to self*

I swear! haha)

here's pics of Eureka: (just in case you were curious)
purple contacts are hard to find >_>;;
rather short skirt! :O

Okay I think I remembered everything this time...>_>;;;

I don't know what you're worrying about lol. A little leg never hurt nobody. Think of it like wearing a bathingsuit and act accordingly. As other people mentioned cheaper methods of going about things, I recommend cosplaylab.com's contacts. I got my purple contacts (which I love) for uh...50-60 bucks. Can't remember, I did receive a member discount so.

Anyways, if you're feeling worried about your costume, I felt even more so!

I ended up wearing the costume only for a couple hours. C'est la vie.
It's hard being pinq.
