I saw this in TIME Magazine and just about fell off my chair:

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1582338,00.html

It's an article called "Where Japanese Women Rule" and talks about the latest Japanese craze of creating "Butler Cafes", a place for women to unwind and where the only men around are in uniform and at their service. The Butler Cafes were started as an answer to the many Maid Cafes (where the waitresses are all dressed up in poufy French-maid outfits) that popped up all over Japan in the past several years.

One interesting thing to note: in Japan, they are now referring to female otaku as otome (roughly translates to "maiden"... but certainly brings to mind the anime "Mai Otome", ne?).

We had an article about the maid cafes awhile ago but I forget where it went. The butler cafe is the natural response, especially since yaoi and other kinds of bishi manga are becoming just as popular. Also, if some GL fashion girls go to a maid cafe they might get mistaken for staff.    Here they could fit in while being waited on.

Very fun.

Also, since I never miss an opportunity to promote my favorite comic.
Conscrew is doing a story about Maid cafes right now, The sidekick character Mimi is trying to start one in their hometown. They just got to the page where they explain what one is.

the manga and anime host club was based on the real host clubs women go to that they have had for years.  Sounds like the Buttler Cafee is trying to be a little more upscale as in an article on a certian industry in Japan they described the guys who worked the host club as looking like slick pimps in the most trendy mens high fashion
