Otaku Happy Hour at the City Grill
« on: December 08, 2006, 10:02:29 am »
I'd like to propose a meetup for Friday December 29th at the Portland City Grill.  Superjaz has volunteered to go early and secure a table, and she vouches for their fantastic happy hour menu.  City Grill is the bar at the top of the US Bank tower on Burnside, aka Big Pink.  Come on up, have some drinks, and most importantly have a good time.

More than one table may be necessary, but that depends on how many people can make it.  So far, I think about seven or eight people have expressed interest.  If the event grows and we need more space, we can relocate elsewhere.  I think Saucebox would be a good candidate.

It's a bar, so obviously, you have to be able to enter legally.

Who is they?  The rest of the nerds at the table?  Unlikely!  If, however, someone is afraid of you, just buy them a drink and they'll probably warm up to you :)

Ok Everybody, it's time to get a preliminary head count.  If we have enough people and need a second table, I should have no trouble leaving work early to get one, so please let me know if you're interested in joining us.  That way, I can plan for an enjoyable meetup!

The bar is non-smoking, so there's no worries there. Superjaz is correct in that the seating is VERY limited. The best tables can squeeze 7, but some can only manage 4, and I think there's even a couple of 2 seaters. The earlier you can get there, the better, as that way we can nab 2 larger tables, but understand that if you are there for a while, you are going to have to order stuff or you're just loitering and they'll boot you out.

Did we ever get a headcount for this?? Now would be a good time for one.

I'm one step ahead of you, brother.  However, since the request I put out is now back on page one of this thread, I fear not a whole lot of people saw it.  So far, we've got four.

How's this for a plan.  We start off at City Grill, get food and a drink, see who's there, and then after an hour or so, head over to some place a little less "competitive" such as Momo's.  Alternatively, doing the event at a McMenamins might work well for folks, as they're all non-smoking (but I can always step outside for a smoke, something you can't do on the 30th floor and live to tell about it!).  Also, seating is easy there.  I'm flexible either way.  It's shaping up to be a slow week around the office next week anyway, with most project managers out of town, so blowing off early on Friday sounds like a keen idea.

I've already told pie about this, but I'll probably be there sometime between 5:30 and 6.  I have to work that day until 4 and then I have to cash my paycheck...  and then make my way into Portland via Max.  So, I'll see you all when I get there.

Some of you are probably wondering, what does this pi dude look like, and how will I recognize him when I get off the elevator at the City Grill?  How will I be able to spot the guy amongst the countless yuppies who look just like him?

I've posted a couple pictures in the member photo thread to help y'all out.  (scroll down)

I'd like to thank those that turned out tonight for a great evening.  For anyone who couldn't make it, don't worry, we plan to do this more often in the future so there will be plenty more opportunities to go out for drinks and talk about bishi dudes and hot hentai!  (I think they're all great!)

We started out at City Grill, where it was standing room only, and I paid $9.00 for one lousy cocktail, but soon we regrouped at the Saucebox, where seating was available, food was good and drinks were less overpriced.  A fantastic time was had by all.  Thanks again!

cheers,
pi

Well, I just went around asking people if they were from Kumoricon, and eventually Pi found me.

Say, I've heard good thing about Gogo's happy hour in Beaverton. Never actually been there for happy hour, even though they're about a block from my house. Anyone want to try it with me sometime?

Pie, next time, I'll give you my cell number.  This should simplify things.  My appologies.

Blackjack, That could be fun, however, by the time I take the bus home, collect my car and drive it to Beaverton, it's likely that happy hour would be over.

Why not next time go to happy hour at Powell's Bookstore.  I have been there before and they have delicious treats…. and a coffee shop.

Pi got hooked on the brown stuff about 14 years ago, when my family moved to Oregon and I discovered that coffee meant something other than instant crystals (that's what people tended to drink in the midwest in those days).

Pie, next time, I'll give you my cell number.  This should simplify things.  My appologies.

No worries. Not like it was anyone's fault.

cause we all wan to see this historic day when Pie meets Pie

And kids I don't think you get it when i say the book store has delicious treats…. and a coffee shop or that "There is ALWAYS something INTERESTING at the bookstore"

The point of meeting at the book store is it will be full of nerdy girls reading books and that is much more exciting than girls a the bar drinking beer

I'm a weirdo I preferre princess nerdia to be without addictive behaviors.   I gave up on the nerdy girl on the bus because I saw her smoking a cigarette.   I was once about to ask a sandwich girl out, she seemed smart, funny, well read and reminded me of Janene Garafalo before she got all self depressed.  One day she is making my sandwich I notice a new  tattoo of an Ankh on her hand and she told me she got so drunk she passed out and her sister gave her a new tattoo.  Obviously I did no crown her queen of nerds.

I dont date drunk girls so some  friends are convinced I must be gay

It has to start some ware.  First it just "Oh we just need one beer to make the beer & butter roast turkey every Sunday" then it takes six bears and the wife is getting her hair stuck in the mixer because she is so drunk she was mesmerized by the whirling blades.  Then they don’t want to dress in poodle skirts and go to the sock hop and dance any more they want to go to the bar to “Dance".

Von "I’d advise young men to be wary of any lady who has addictive behaviors or is self abusive" Dan

PS and only plug the mixer into an outlet that has a on/off switch that would not be blocked by flaling arms near the mixer

Oh how many beers had YOU had!!

Be happy is was an egg beater and not as I glimpsed out of the corner of my eye a 40 pound kitchen aid that slid 3 feet "The length of the hair twisting around the mixing blade" in about 1/100 of a second followed by a thud and a shreak.

I'm reminded of the time last 4th of July when all the guys played football but I stayed in to make a cake with the girls.  But I think every one is to young to hear about when I gave the ladies the spatula of frosting and told them "good girls always get to lick the spoon"

Some ware I accidentally came across some Velma pictures on the net in a look alike gallery, The two best were a women who was kicked out of an amusement park because she looked to much like Velma and the kids kept wanting to get pictures and autographs.  Another was an out of work actress in LA who goes to kids parties as Velma.
