Anime/Jpop Music On The Radio

Hello everyone!

I wanted to start a discussion regarding getting an anime/jpop show started on the radio.

I work for an AM radio station here in the Portland area and want to find out what type of interest there would be if I started producing a weekly show on anime related stuff along with playing some jpop music.

The show would feature things like anime/gaming/music news. I would want to do a segment that talked about anime/sci-fi conventions coming up in the United States as well as local festivals and events celebrating Japanese culture.

The show would play jpop music, but since the show is on a "talk-radio" station, the management would be more inclined to approve a show if it had a primary talk element. Another feature of the show would be that I would interview industry professionals at the various conventions that I attend and I would edit these for playback on the show.

One downside is that the show would be on the air pretty late. The only available time slot that I could see the management approving at this point would be Friday night at Midnight (technically Saturday morning).

The show would be produced so that other radio stations could pick it up for free for playback on their stations, so I hope it would eventually be all over the United States.

What does everyone think?

Maybe you could also do like an Anime Q&A. There's so many people out there that have no clue about anime. I'm lucky that my parents actually even understand what I'm talking about when I talk about anime.

For some people, they can't even watch anime because their parents or guardians or whatever think it's all animated porn. Or that it's too violent or whatnot. This could be a chance to dispell some of the nastier rumours about anime and its fanbase to even if it's only to a few people.
Unable to come this year. Sorry guys...

I think you'd have better luck podcasting.  You could reach more of your target audience.

I, for one, would love to be able to listen to some good anime music on the radio.

Of course, the fact that I only get two stations out here (Western and Classical), probably makes me desperate for anything that isn't an mp3 player! ^.^
No, I'm not insane.  I'm just... happy.

We originally considered this, however we would have to be able to pay for mechanical reproduction rights for the music. Way to expensive to even consider.

Another idea that hasn't been legally challenged yet is to have an "On Demand" web audio stream. Instead of having to pay for mechanical reproduction rights, we might be able to pay the regular streaming audio fees, but the listener would be able to hear the show when they wanted (still can't be recorded legally though).

Another reason why we want to get this started at the radio station is so we have access to the professional broadcast equipment. Podcasting is pretty big, however the audio quality is poor at best for a lot of shows.

Good point. Most radio shows, people will start by tuning in on accident or by hearing a quick 10-30 second promo for an upcoming show. To be able to potentially use a show like this to "turn someone on" to the genre is definitly important.

This is an excelent idea.  A web forum which I belong to, Metachat, has it's own streaming radio station, which members take turns DJing.  This arrangement has worked out very well for us.  If you're interested, I suggest you head over there and email one of the admins for more info.

I usually download or find radio drama (Tenipuri on the Radio, Radio SEED, ect) on the net and listen to those.   =3

I'd also like to suggest http://www.live365.com

If you go into the "More Genres A-Z" link, you'll find a Japanese catagory.

They have a variety of radio programming options and have a catagory of stations for jpop/jrock/anime shows- Anime Hardcore Radio 1 for example.

I was going to start one a while back to go with my web site, but I never got around to do it. I think the basic one is about $30 for three months.

You seem really enamoured of these guys.  The only track of theirs I've heard is the closer to Texhnolyze, which was a rather dark and somber folky sounding tune.  Can you recommend other tracks worth checking out?

Quick update... The radio station may be keeping their music format after all, so there's a good chance I'll be able to have an all Jpop show and it might not have to be on too late. Currently the radio station plays satellite talk radio from 4pm-8am, Saturday-Sunday and they don't receive any revenue for playing that, so if I can get some sponsors I could convince them to give me an early evening timeslot...

Unfortunately, the next update won't be until sometime in February. Hopefully it will be good news!
