Is this attack by spammers lately been something new or something that has always been happening here that I've just not noticed. Most seems to be porn spammers. I'm wondering if there is anything that can be done? Expecially if the younger crowd comes here to read our forums. Or am I just worrying too much?

The Mods delete the posts. They are doing a good job., I believe, with the number of them there are.

I think we should have one of those "enter the letters/numbers shown" to create an account, because that's what stops them from gaining one, isn't it?

They've popped up a lot more this year (2007) than in the past. As if someone made a new crack for the script kiddies and Santa Hacker delivered to them all on noobmas or something.

They usually just sit there until a mod notices them. Today's made quite a few threads though didn't they?

The simple fact is that the internet is for porn, and we are the ones abusing it by attempting to use it for non-porn-related purposes. We should all be ashamed of ourselves!

This year was the first year I saw an outbreak like this in spam posts. And I originally saw it happen on other sites before this one. It's kinda annoying, yet I can see the mods are doing an excellent job in disposing of the blech ridden posts. ^_^ So I just ignore them. Seriously, whoever took that time to compile porn links and whatnot is only hurting themselves. >>;

sorry guys, I slept in or I woulda gotten them sooner. they have all gone to the spamhole to be investigated for matching scripts/info to place our filters

they are just weird too. i just read one that was about some kinda testicle disease.

i would be less confused if they were all porn and money lending sites, but i saw on efor like i think it was insurence or something a couple days ago.

The amount of spam has gone way up in the past few months. We're continually looking at ways to block it, but the spammers work very hard to get around any blocks put in place, and at the moment we don't want to require administrator approval for new accounts. For now, we have a few active moderators who delete them as they are posted.

From what I understand (at least from what happens with my own forums and websites), hackers crack certain versions of message boards and can target-spam them just by searching for message boards with the older versions.

Whenever we get that starting to happen on our boards, it sort of reminds us that we are behind in updating our forum software. We do that and the spam pretty much stops. Until they find a way to crack that version... then it's on to another update for us. I'm not sure what version we are using here at the moment, but the last copyright below says 2005 and I know there have been updates to phpbb since then. Quite a few if I remember correctly.

We're using nearly the latest version. They must have just forgotten to update the copyright date. I checked secunia.com and there aren't any critical vulnerabilities affecting the version we have, so I think we're ok.

The last time we got any spam postings on a friends private forum (that were in bad English with an IP out of Asia) we made counter post and sent Anon e-mail to the IP owner commenting on the smallness of certain of his body parts and that’s why his women want to marry an Americans and we never got another Spam

If a spam with an offensive image is posted, send a PM to JeffT (me), and I'll check it out. I get PM notifications on my cell phone so it shouldn't take long.

(Please don't send a PM for just ordinary spam, though.

I already check the forums usually twice a day and not to be rude or anything but don't have time to constantly run to delete every spam instantly, and I think there are three other mods who are very active so in general a single spam won't last long.)

There's a better captcha add on you can install for phpBB. I installed it on my board and it has cut down the spam by like 95%.
