You KNOW you think it.  Every time a horde of Naruto cosplayers go by you sigh, they all start to look the same unless they REALLY look good.

What are you so sick and tired of seeing cosplayed (unless it's sdone SO well that they stand out from the horde of generic cosplayers)?

Mine?

- Naruto
- FMA
- Bleach is starting to get there

I'm just wondering what else people think are "over cosplayed."

I'm sorry.
=/
It does get quite annoying.
And I cosplay as Naruto.

People are probably going to get on me about saying that.

Hmmmm...

- Overly done Hot Topic EGL/EGA ((I see so many dresses/clothes/so on from hot topic done as if it's suppose to be EGL/EGA. It annoys me and draws away from the good EGL/EGA))

- FMA (as much as I like this anime... seeing the cosplay is starting to get annoying. The costumes really don't have that much originality on their own and I've already seen so many good ones that I just lost the spark for FMA cosplay)

- Kakashi's.... (I think they deserve to be talked about without the anime. I love great Naruto cosplay that actually keeps up with the manga/anime. But Kakashis are starting to annoy me. Too many of them for my tastes)

That's all I really care about... or don't care about. O_o

Well it is hard because once signature pieces of a character's costume start to be sold in the store (those red Edward jackets, naruto headbands, etc) then costumes are going to start to look alot more alike.  I don't think it is a terrible thing because alot of people just don't have alot of money and don't have sewing skills (like me!) so I don't want to bash anyone who buys parts pre-made. Personally I am going to try to make my costume but those who make part and buy part will be much more similar I guess.

Yuuuunnnnaaaa from FF. D:

Alot of the time it's half-assed. I have seen several good Yunas, but it's like, overload.

I have to agree, the Spawns of Hot Topic children who parade around in Cat ears and baggy cargo pants with like 593006 straps and inflated egos kind erk me.

Full Metal Alchemist
Naruto
Bleach
Samurai Champloo
Chobits (ARHG CHI)
Inu Yasha

Any other BS that Cartoon Network has pretty much shoved out there to the general public. It usually causes a huge uprising of newbie otaku-types that all cosplay THE SAME THING!

Actually, I cosplay a Naruto character because it's simple.  And Note: I've never seen any more than one episode of the dubbed cartoon network version.

I dont see how there is anything wrong with seeing a lot of any one series of characters. Different people identify with different characters and they like what they like. If someone wants to cosplay as naruto then let them. If someone wants to do Rinoa then more power to them. Its all a part of what cosplaying is. Honestly I think its alot of fun when you get a whole lot of people from one series, it makes for great group shots!

Just my 2 cents.

It also depends on what con you are at, a small con like AnimeOasis didn't have that much doubling up of character. A big con like Sakuracon(7000+) your gonna see a lot of the same characters.

ok I agree with  the idea of its annoying how many naruto and inuyasha cosers we have going around mostly because of the fact that most people put no work into doing it. alot of chars have been played out but its still nice to see a good one next to a bad one so you can see who actually takes pride in thier work. also I think my friend yatta dante did a great kakshi because he takes pride in his outfits.

Oh, I'm not saying it's wrong.  I just know it's irritating to see sooo many swarms of particular characters.

It's so funny to see a sea of little Edward's running around XD

If they're really well done I am very pleased.

NarutonoJutsu is SUCH a cute Naruto!  It stands out from generic-I just have this orange pair of pants and jacket and no likeness to the character- cosplay.

Know what I mean?

I agree with the Inu yasha thing, too!  I've seen my fair share of horrible wigs . .  .

In regards to half-assed costumes, yes, I'm guility of it.  I didn't know I was going to Sakura-Con until the week prior, and I had to throw my costume together.  Next year, and of course for KCon, I'm hoping to have my costume done accurately and with props and everything (Windmill Shuriken, and possibly a curse seal on my shoulder)

I'm not really "sick of seeing" a lot of the same characters most of the time.  For me it's sometimes fun to see the different versions people come up with.

But I guess for the sake of adding to the list, Yuna from FF.  Yeah, she does look like a cool character and all but I would really like to see other FF characters like Dagger, Tifa, even a few more Aeriths (Aeris, can't remember which).  I can't remember if I've ever seen an Eiko cosplayer at Kumoricon.
But I do remember someone on the board or elsewhere saying they would love to see a Yuna and the other girls in a mode other than Gunner or Summoner (or something like that).  That I would be interested in seeing.

Yuna is way overdone in my opinion. Gunner mode that is. But one of the most beautiful coplayers I've ever seen was a Yuna in her wedding dress..... ^_^ It was sooo pretty!

0_o I couldn't agree with you more.... but alas they made ranma 1/2 so.... I'm undecided.... but if we're just talking inu yasha then yeah, it's worse than all of the over-cosplayed animes combined (note that I'm not saying that all cosplays of this anime are bad but.... why no heten or rare characters, why always the main ones *sigh*, at least with naruto there's somewhat of a variety)

That's not really any particular character, but you know what? I agree with you. The thought of too much skin, it just doesn't appeal to me. But then again, I've never appreciated cleavage either and I know that has mass apeal to the opposite sex. Preference I guess, it all comes back to preference. In the end, though, concerning the matter of partial nudity and the appropriateness of costumes I will say only this:

Don't wear anything you wouldn't want to see your children wearing. And be honest with yourselves. Would you really want to see your daughter (in the hypothetical future) have her boobs hanging out of her dress like Lulu, or wearing skirts up to here like most schoolgirl fukus? Same applies to boys wearing spandex pants. It's one thing to appreciate Heero from Gundam enough to cosplay him, it's quite another thing to fall under the catergory of indecent exposure. There are tamer substatutes for spandex that can most definantly be used when the situation calls for them!

Or how about NAGA, I saw a naga at sakuracon, almost lost my lunch.
And for you guys out there, dont do the spandex, underarmor is a slightly better substatute if you have to have the skin tight.

Oh gawd. Don't get me started on wigs!
I see people at Sakura Con with horrible wigs and like their hair showing!
If you are gonna wear a wig wear it right! Get a wig cap or something! It's only like a dollar for one. ~o~
I am really picky about cosplay. I don't mind seeing skin unless, well the person has more of it than clothes on. -shudders-
Hot Pocketins [Hot Topic] bother me too, I mean I own a pair of those 'bondage' pants but I havent warn them regularly since middle school. You get stuck to chairs anyway. D:
Other than that, I don't really mind lots of same character cosplayers. Of course I turn to my friends and say "Oh that is a good _____" Or "Wow you shouldnt be wearing that" But usually I am took caught up in my own thing to really pay attention. Soo many pictures.
@_@
And for the record I've been cosplaying Naruto for 2 years!
Please don't assume I am one of those CN watching kids who havent seen anything but Cowboy Bebop and Inu Yasha. Heck I don't even like Inu Yasha but I did cosplay an awesome Shippou about 5 years ago.

I read about this a little on the LJ community, Condrama, and having people be in really revealing costumes that don't fit their body type.

I'm not saying, just because you're bigger than other people, don't cosplay, but either modifiy the costume or -cough- loose weight.

Here's Mine:

- Naruto
- FMA

I'm not saying those titles are bad but I'm not into them and there's just too many people doing them..I felt one of a kind when I was the only Count at Kumoricon. Personally if I WERE a Naruto or FMA cosplayer I'd try to be a character that not so many people were playing. LOL

Yea, if people go as characters that have been seen every where. They should put some effort in them. If they just through some stuff together that kinda look like the character it gets annoying -_-
Besides that I really don't care. Its what they like, and thats good ^_^ As long as every one is having fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah for me the bottom line is quality.

if i was seeing TONS OF TONS of really well done say...naruto all over then i would be like "well thats getting boring but i cant say mugh more than that"  but the shear mass quantity of half assed costumes is what gets on my nerves.  and ive been afraid to say anything cause i figured narutards were in the majority.  sometime its kidan like seeing everyone with the same purse, why cant you get your own purse?  i really LOVE seeing stuff that i havent seen to often, like amano art versions of stuff.  or olderschool things.

but the things that have gotten stale for me are

Naruto
Inuyasha
(ranma used to be here to but its gone out of fashion)
Bleach is eaking its was onto my list
Regular/Gunner Yuna (i wanna do one of the others as a trio with people sometime, lilke all the black mages or beast masters or festival wear or somthing)
VASH (they sell the coat at Hot Topic now)
Nabeshin & Spike ( a Blazer of a simeler color to the characters does NOT = cosply,  though i have seen a really bitchen spike with an acurate coat with wierd closeres and perfect hari 10 points to him)

And sailor moon is kinda iffy on my list too, used to be that everyone did a freakin sailor scout, but like ranma has gone out of con fashion (even though you almost allways see at least one)  and is allmost such a icon at this point that its kinda kitchy, id still only like to see it well done though.  or as silly silly crosplay, then its just funny.

see me I don't mind if there more than one,it's just when theres way to many becuase then your just a clone. Unless you spent lots of time on your costume.Me I go as a rare or little cosplayed like Nia from DearS theres like not one dearS so I don't blend in,or my wrath costume at Sakura con 2006.My dad also got into cosplaying so we make a rule do a charrter that you never really see cosplayed. For explain fma theres so many envys, eds and roys. But you never really see a Scar or AL (my dad was Scar sakuracon06 and kumoricon05).But if we do one that is a copy then I freck out if it does'nt look like the charrter or close to it.But if your just not at all going to put time into it then whats the fun? Unless your really busy or shoron cash I should know I think I spent at least 300 on my nia costume and now workng on my riiku costume.

That- I think is the reason why most people are sick of the same costumes. First it starts out with a few people doing excellent jobs. Then it tumbles down to half ass jobs. And people are tired of seeing it done sloppy.

and I have to agree with the list of overly played parts. But oh well. Not much you can do about it.

I mean I'm playing Lust this year. I'm very excited, but people already seem to be annoyed with FMA. Oh well, I'm excited :3

To start I must comment on some people's signatures I noticed while reading this topic:

makichan, you rock! That scene is the best and most hilarious of that whole movie!! I agree, Viva la Shinra! Kawaii!
And a holla out for Daxe, great use of typed emoticons! ^.^

Ok. So, all in all I agree with everyone on the overdoneness of the afore mentioned animes and their subsequent characters. The greatest thing about a con is seeing a cosplay that you have no clue what the heck it is or where it's from and going up and asking them about it so then you learn about a new anime you could possibly check out! Plus it makes them feel good cause you noticed their hard work and originality.

I personally will be going as Misao Makimachi from RK. Yes, perhaps it has been done many times before, but I'm new to the Con scene and so I didn't see any last year, only a few Kenshin's and Sano's, but I like finding the characters that are so obscure yet still awesome in their persona, like Misao, besides, she's so my personality type and it's an easy cosplay for my first attempt!
Jerimiah of Bakazoku Fangirl- (yes, we're even engaged!!!! ^.^ we consumated our love with a Beef Crunch Wrap Supream and a hot sauce packet that asked him to marry me ^.^)

Goggle Squad Fangirl- also so dubbed by Waffles

Naruto... -_-
Final Fantasy
Also even though I like it... FMA. Just because they always get cosplay awards when everyone of them looks the same and people with really good costumes from other animes are ignored.
Mmm... not sick of Inu Yasha yet... but I might be someday.

I don't mind if there's a bunch of diversity of characters from the animes, but when you can turn around and see ONE group of Narutos' I guess thats when its bad.
I also have this theory that there'sprobly going to be a lot of Organization XIII from Kingdon Hearts 2, and the same goes from some FFXII characters.
I would love to see people cosplay as their FFXI Characters, in my mind that would be an awsome cosplay idea, even though we don't look like Mithrans, Tarutaru's, Elvaan's, or those weird tatoo headed Hume's. That would be a great cosplay Idea if you can pull it off.

I don't like "Sexy no juitsu" characters that aren't Naruto. Remember kids, Sauske is MALE. He wouldn't run around in a bikini. Neither would Kakashi.

Those running around with Naruto headbands also bother me for some reason. So do fishnet shirts, as well.

Oh my gosh...I feel so bad now... I chose to play Inuyasha for last kumoricon because he's a character I've known for a long time and his costume covered my fat.. T3T  I know I wasn't a good cosplayer and all and i sort of realized people were probably gonna hate all the inuyashas. T3T  Oopsie.

Even though I've only been to one anime convention I have to say, seeing all the Yuna's with the same costume design was sorta... boring.  Although, I did like the rare glimpses of the Paranoia Agent characters and enjoyed the FMA cosplayers.  The Yuna cosplayers did well with their costumes but i guess it was boring because I never really liked Yuna in the first place.  But they did do a very nice job!

Naruto's dub is bad but the costumes don't bother me.  Kakashi may be a very common character to cosplay but the kakashi's all do such a good job being him ^^  I think Sailor Moon's characters are starting to bug me -_-

The only problem about cosplaying a character that no one knows is... You don't get pictures.

I cosplayed Chise from Saikano at Sakura Con 06 I got like 4 pictures maybe? I mean, not to sound like an attention whore... but when no one recognizes you it takes the fun out. Or you feel like... you did a bad job on your costume. That! and I only have one really bad picture of us in the hall way, cuz the people who did take my picture well, they havent posted their pictures anywhere or they fell off the face of the earth!
[If anyone has any pictures of a Chise from Sakura Con 06 feel free to hand em over]

AND! since none of my other friends were cosplaying from Saikano well I felt kind of out of place. BUT that is besides the point!

Love, I agree that these are overly used and there should be a wider variety but these series are populare and deserve credit.

Although, I agree: Naruto has gotten out of hand.  I like to see a wider variety.  I like seeing some Naruto cosplays but try and space out what you do.  I'm cosplaying from about 3 different series this year.  This is a stretch even for me.  Geh.

As for Bleach.... I personally see nothing wrong with it.  I'm happy to see so many Ichigo's and Orihime's, and Renji's.... oh bring on the Renji-hot-ness!

@NarutoNoJutsu
Amen to that.
Speaking from personal experience, when I went to Kcon '04 as Seta from Love Hina, very few people recognized who I was and even fewer took my picture.  I kept being mistaken for a doctor.

The funny thing about me being mistaken for a doctor was another convention was going on nearby which did include a few doctors.

I agree and I think I saw you at the Kumoricon for 2004, Negima and I'm sure I said "Hi!  I love your cosplay!  Seta-sensei!!!"  I remember Love Hina well.  Our anime club used to play it non-stop.

As for the comment from NarutoNoJutsu... agreed.  It's hard when you put do much time into your cosplay that no one recognizes you.  That's why I'm doing Shounen Jump characters this year.  I'm gonna go with characters I like/tolerate but when I cosplay it'd be nice to have someone mention it.

Although, did anyone catch the Kentaro Oei from Golden Boy cosplay last year?  That rocked my socks!  Whoever did it... god bless you and may panties be thrown into your toilet seat for all eternity.  hahahaha... kidding.  But that took guts.  Rarely will you find someone cosplay from an OVA that isn't ROD.  We have many Yomiko Readerman's in the world and not so many that I found to be classic Yomiko.  But this guy acted like Kentaro.  Oh god!  Hahaha.  I also found a Knives at a con about two years ago.  That was great.  Not too many Knives from Trigun.  I think I found a Rei Dey the Blade cosplay, too!  That was spiffy.

I think it's important to acknoledge anyone cosplaying.  It's not easy and sometimes the Naruto's and the Ichigo's and the Ed's just take the focus away from the true cosplayers who just do it cause they like it.  That's the most important thing.
Parents; be good to your kids.... they'll be choosing your nursing home.

What I'm tired of is people going as main characters. Thats why I was Izumi last year. (And going to be this year with modifications) I wish to see more supporting/minor characters. I think without them there would be no story for the main characters.

Yes. I agree with Yuna and Naruto. Too many.

the many many FF cosplay bugs me a little, but for the most part, I dun really care how much seeing a swarm of those cosplay of a particular anime series.  Partly, I suppose I have done some of those series that many people considered overdone(naruto & bleach).  Although, it does bug me when I see someone has a costume that looks slap together.  Example: Sakura 05, I spent hours and my own money to make an actual hakama for a bleach cosplay and I go and see some people out who're just wearing a karate uniform and claiming its a bleach cosplay!

@NarutoNoJutsu & Negima
ditto.  at least you got a little attention.  when I did Tenchi Masaki from Tenchi Muyo, no one even realized I was even cosplaying!! X_X

Its not that I'm sick of Naruto or FMA, I'm more tired of people that half-arse their costumes. (In fact, I looked EVERYWHERE for a good GOOD Naruto that I could take a picture of at Sakura06 this year and I didn't find one to my liking)

I saw so many Sasuke's that refused to style their hair, or even have it the right color, or wear a wig. My best friend died and cut her hair really short for KCon04 and I spiked it for her every morning. She's the best Sasuke I've ever seen to this day because of that. And Ed's with the wrong color hair. His hair is clearly not brown! Not pink! Not...nasty!

That- I think is the reason why most people are sick of the same costumes. First it starts out with a few people doing excellent jobs. Then it tumbles down to half ass jobs. And people are tired of seeing it done sloppy.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement!

It's not the problem that I'm tired of any specific anime... its that I don't like to see the same character IF they are done badly. It's not hard at all to make your costume unique, or put some thought/creativity into it. I still like to see tasteful Naruto characters...  I saw a Konohamaru that absolutely rocked my socks off, and a pj Kakashi that had me laughing. The few people that do Sandaime are always cool, and how many of you have seen a Kisame? There have got to be 40 or 50 characters in Naruto, so there is a lot of room for variety.

Moving on to the problem... The 'overplayed' characters are usually characters I really like, so it disappoints me to see such a terrible job of them, but actually, if its a good costume, well-made, then I really like the costume regardless of how many people do it.

For example, I cosplayed Sasuke in KC '04 and did a good job because of my real hair that I'd done like his.
link: http://www.cosplaylab.com/cosplayers/costumes/details.asp?costumeid=113840

So, this year at SC '06, I saw a crappy Sasuke around every corner and I was tired of it. I mean, people can do what they want, it's their choice, but I guess it kinda makes me think, 'Well, I did this character when they were new, the anime was still in Japanese, and I did a good job... but its just a lame character to be anymore.'

Oh, and just to throw my two cents at the other person who said something about it... I absolutely think sexy no jutsu of anyone besides Naruto or Konohamaru, is a shameless way to both put no effort into your costume and walk around looking like a you-know-what. I think if its in the show, then fine, that's the show and that's cool, but its so OC to have Sasuke or Gaara ever do that. Ever.

In conclusion... (wow I wrote a lot more than I intended) I think the bottom line is just to relax with friends, have fun, make new friends, and spend time participating in a hobby you enjoy regardless of how you dress. I think it's people's own perrogative and situation that will determine who they come as and the quality of their costume... but if you come as Sasuke with long brown hair, don't expect to be the new hot thing at the con. No offense, but a costume like that doesn't really deserve much attention.

I'm sure that "crappy sasuke" refers to me at least once.

keep in mind, not everyone has TIME or MONEY to make good costumes.

Hell, I didn't even know I was going to SC06 until a WEEK before.  You try putting together a decent cosplay of a popular character with very little, if NO money, and only a week.

Hmm... mine took about 50 bucks (maybe slightly less) and I did it in three weeks and it was my very first cosplay.

Anyways, like I said, do what you like. The point of the con is to have fun. Just because your costume doesn't exactly suit my tastes doesn't mean you couldn't be perfectly happy about it between you and your friends.

Well, as many have said, I think FMA, Naruto, Inu-Yasha, Bleach and Final Fantasy are the big ones. Especially Naruto and FMA. Not that I don't like the shows. And it's fun to cosplay from fun shows that many know about with unique costumes like that (sure Naruto costumes almost always wear headbands, but they're otherwise different from one another).

But again, as many have said, I'd love to see more minor-ish characters be cosplayed. I mean, I'm cosplaying Greed from FMA for a day, and I only saw one or two of him at SakuraCon 06. Comon, people. Minor characters ROCK.

Then there's those fun yet hardly ever cosplayed anime/manga/video games/etc. Like Loveless. Not the best to cosplay, but a cute story, and would be fun to get a group together. Fushigi Yugi has nice costumes, and I haven't seen as many Yuugiou costumes as I thought there'd be at SakuraCon 06 (GX would be interesting to see). Tons more, but too many to list.

In the end, I guess it's all about popularity, huh? Adult Swim/Toonami is watched by many, many people, and therefore it's a huge target for cosplay. Surely there's those who have watched the Japanese versions as well (like me), but...yeah. It's mostly the Adult Swim people.

I mean, not to sound like an attention whore... but when no one recognizes you it takes the fun out.

This year I'm going to be cosplaying something famous, but very few people, if any, at K-Con (aside from my personal friends) will recognize me. Heck, if anyone figures out who I am they should earn a metaphorical cookie. The thought of no one recognizing me is actually quite tantalizing to be honest.

As for over-played stuff... I can't say much else than anyone else has said. Naruto, FMA and Inuyasha cosplayers are abundant and flock to conventions like locusts on farm fields. Some are good and I believe people should remember that, while there are many lackluster to terrible Naruto/FMA/Inuyasha etc. cosplayers, there are a few good ones and those, in my opinion, make it all seem worthwhile.

Oh and I am apart of the royal court of half-assed costumes. A $0.99 white t-shirt that smelled like grease and baking soda, put it on over my head and called myself the "White T-Shirt Ninja." Yeah... Terrible and I am proud of it!

Spork is personally tired of people who cosplay one piece VERY BADLY.  Luffy is not a red shirt with the sleeves ripped off, rolled up jeans, and ratty sneakers.  Zoro is not spraying your hair green, tying some green stuff around your waist, and wearing black pants.  For being so simple, alot of people seem to be... Not good at it X_X;;

But yes, I'm also tired of Naruto and FMA, and... well, everything else that's been done rather half assedly a million times.

This is all too much under the file marked "Drama".

I don't understand why anyone would be sick of seeing cosplayers as anything.  People are cosplaying.  Hooray for them!
And why would anyone care if they saw terrible cosplay?  So what if someone's only entrance into the whole genre is Cartoon Network.  So what if their first attempt at Naruto consists of Hot Topic merch.

it just really makes me sad to see this thread.  I say this uber-geeky hobby of ours should be embraced a bit more liberally by the people invested in the hobby.

I understand what you all are saying, but there are tons of people out there cosplaying these "overdone" characters because they LIKE the character.

I say that cosplaying shouldn't bother anyone because if we are all cosplaying, then we are all dressing goofy!

Sorry, but I don't consider a hobby that I put sooo much money or effort in as "dressing goofy."  I take it pretty seriously.  If you're going to enter a cosplay competition you want to compete with the elite, not the "I borrowed this shirt from my little sister and the skirt from my older sister and now I am the obnoxious girl from Kodoma no Omocha."  -_-'

There are a lot of poorly done cosplays and a loooot of overdone cosplays.  If they like the character, they could put some effort into their costume.

I agree with you on most these things. But I think that as a hobby, even with the borrowing of clothes and shopping at thift stores; You have to start somewhere. And not everyone can afford to make fabulous costumes. Hopefully though, I'll have my costume ready for the masq this year.

You don't think that dressing as a cartoon character is goofy?  I only said it to lighten the mood.  It's amazing...I wonder if knitting circles complain like this about how crummy someone did on a blanket they entered in the County Fair.     There are many of us who do take it seriously and I totally respect that.

Also take into account that what might look good to some may not look good to others.   There are people out there who think that they did a darn fine job on their costume with given circumstances, budget, skill level and that's alright...or at least it should be.  Am I just plain wrong here?..because I thought that this was a FUN hobby.  There's not much fun in complaining about other people's skills, right?

I understand the idea of wanting to compete with the best and so on.   However, there wouldn't be much to worry about competition wise if you were up against the "girl from Kodoma no Omocha" .  ~_^  BTW, that was another joke to lighten the mood.

I agree with you on most these things. But I think that as a hobby, even with the borrowing of clothes and shopping at thift stores; You have to start somewhere. And not everyone can afford to make fabulous costumes. Hopefully though, I'll have my costume ready for the masq this year.

YES!  You have to start somewhere!  Excactly!  You aren't born with superhuman abilities to sew and make armor straight out of the womb.  You have to learn...most learn by doing.   You can all help with that process and inform people on the little things like hemming a garment and wearing a wig cap to hide your real hair and whatever else people complain about.  Be part of the solution instead of being online and complaining.  ^_^

Seeing other people at cons do really good jobs inspires me to want to do a really good job too. Some people do such good jobs it amazes me. I usually pay a heck of a lot more attention to them than I do to the people that did a kinda quick borrow-my-sister's-skirt job. That's just placing credit where its due... ^_^

Although I may critique a lot, I agree that we are all there to have fun, be crazy, relax, or simply coexist with our fellow geeks. I didn't mean to imply anything besides that.

Not when you lose to her because she's dating the head of the voting committee, not when because you're not friends with the rest of the voters your months of time sewing are deemed useless.  While this hasn't happened at a con, it HAS happened in cosplay TO ME.

The topic is about cosplays people think are overdone, so let's get back on subject.

Thanks.

Naruto. No offense to Naruto cosplayers though, I love you guys!

In fact, I used to be all for it because a few years back during Kumoricon 2004, I was quite surprised to see so many people cosplaying as Naruto characters because the show (I thought) wasn't that popular or at least hasn't been released in America (most people I knew were bit torrenting the episodes).  It also could've been that that was my first con, and I didn't know what to expect in terms of cosplay trends.

I'm sick of seeing people always critisize other people on what they are wearing (for cosplay). Those people that cosplaye that wear what they do...and do it because its fun and thats what they want is fun to them

What of us is to say that its not alright for them to wear what they want. Its like saying that I dont like people wearing blue jeans. Its just silly in my opinion.

Granted there are some cosplay/costumes that are more pleasing to the eye than others, but I still think its great that those people are doing something other than just going normal day-to-day clothes. But... judging and criticizing is a facet of life, even though its quite annoying and cruel at times.

That also brings up a thought that alot of people I know of have about the whole cosplay drama thing... is it better to have normal clothes than it is to have fun and play an "over done" character or someone that had thier outfit/costume commissioned by someone else? To us (me and my friends), wearing normal clothes is better (because of all the people always putting other people down), which is sad because it deters alot from the fun. The anime we watch is always the the same... episode 4 is episode 4, who cares of Jill looks like Jane if they are both having a blast.

If anything to add to the original poster of this thread I am sick of seeing people in normal clothes at the con! Dress up, have fun! Sorry about the negative tone of this post, its just cosplay drama really gets under my skin at times.

For my first con, I didn't prepare a costume (I kinda winged going to it), and I swear, it's not a fraction of how much fun you can have if you cosplay. I think cosplayers tend to slightly ignore people in normal clothes.

Not taking offense or anything but I'm curious about something.

What if the cosplay is basically normal clothes?  When I cosplayed as Seta (Love Hina) I used all regular, unaltered clothes: Black button-shirt, red tie, black pants, and a doctor's coat.

Just curious.

If it looks like the character and your are having fun, I personally dont see the problem with it. Other people might, I just go to cons to have fun and dress up. I will be doing an original character at kumoricon most likely so I doubt anyone will know what I will be, but i still think it will be fun.

Overdone cosplay characters
« Reply #71 on: June 02, 2006, 10:08:58 am »
When I see too many duplicate characters, they all seem to meld into the same person and I stop noticing them. This isn't too much of an issue when I'm just being a regular con attendee, but when I'm one of the hall cosplay judges it means that some people's costumes can unintentionally be ignored because we mistakenly think "oh, I've already given a hall costume award to that person".

I'd like to see more variety in cosplay. I find it more fun when I come across a unique costume -- epecially if it's a well-done version of an obscure character -- than yet another copy of one I've seen 100 times that day.

Overdone are:
Naruto
Bleach
Full Metal Alchemist
FF's Yuna

Let's see some new costumes, gang. Try something from one of the newer, more obscure series rather than something that 90% of us have already seen hundreds of times. You'll get more attention that way, too. Oh, and shoot for accuracy in the details, it's what sets the costume apart from the rest.  :)

If you are wanting costuming help, seek me out at the convention and we can discuss how to make some of the more interesting costumes. Learning to sew isn't as difficult as you may think.

If someone is going to cosplay from a well known anime or do a well known anime they should at least do an obscure costume. If you're going to cosplay as Sailor Moon stay away from the fuka and do one of her casual outfits or something from the artbooks. If you are going to cosplay as Ranma don't go in his red Chinese outfit. Go in something else! I guess that is kinda hard to do with FMA or Naruto but then agian that is one of the things that bugs me with shows like those. They are so popular but you really can't figure out why because they just get SO repeditive after a while. This is why I like obscure shows like Kino no Tabi. <3

From personal experience, you have to be careful with a casual outfit because chances are others won't know who you are or they'll think you're wearing everyday casual clothes and not cosplaying.  When I did my first cosplay I thought about going as Keitaro from "Love Hina" but I couldn't think of any outfit or clothes that people could easily recognize.

And secondly...

You see, I don't mind the cosplayers; if they look good instead of a half assed job.

What annoys me is that when they cosplay; they don't go in character, my friends and I tried that at the SakuraCon earlier this year.

Granted, I was an Inuyasha running around with said bad ears and wig due to lack of good money and supplies to make an awesome wig and ears. But, despite the shabby wig and ears; I was one of the people who got hit up for photos because when I'd rest for a minute or talk to my friends, I'd pose myself like the character I'm roleplaying as.

This year though, I'd love to see someone do some characters from MegaTokyo (I'm going as Kimiko and maybe Erika if I can throw their outfits together properly and get Kimiko's wig) and other kinda rare anime/manga/webcomic/etc.

For my first con (which was Kumoricon) I did Brandon Heat from Gun Grave. I did Brandon Heat Pre joining Melenion and no one recognized me.

So to my point, I have TWO lists of what I would like to see and was I never want to see again!

What I want to see:

Gun Grave!

Gad Guard maybe? I think that would be cool

Gun x Sword would be pretty cool

And Hellsing! Where are all the Hellsing Cosplayers?!?!?

FLCL. That would be sweet.

Paranoia Agent.

What I never want to see:

Naruto! OH man! Here are the reasons. 1. Theyalways do the same characters! For once I would like to see a well done Gara or something. 2. I saw someone do a Rock Lee Cosplay and it was not well done. I am now scared for life. And finaly, there are very few people who I have seen that have done the Naruto Cosplay well. I have seen a pretty sweet Zabuza but thats about it.

Bleach, again, I havent seen a really good one yet.

And Vash. I have seen so may Vashs and only one good one at Sakuracon.

Now, I've never actually been to a convention, so this'll be my first year. But, let's say... I'm an online cosplaying expert!  :'D  I've spent hours searching through thousands of cosplay pictures of all sorts online. And nothing gets me more irritated than seeing a good cosplay, except the person just wears their normal hair.
What's the point of just dressing up if you aren't going to go all the way? Good God people.  ==;

Hearing all these anti-Naruto people makes me only more motivated to get my Orochimaru costume done excelently.
I hope I'll end up worthy in all you hater's eyes.  xD;;
Maybe I'll slide by considering I'm doing a semi-abstract character?

Actually, I've only ever seen one Naruto himself that I thought was very good. I think its less of a matter of seeing too many Naruto characters and more of a matter of not very many good ones. I'm only a little bit of a hater because I've been there, done that as far as that goes since I cosplayed Sasuke in 04:

.....*Guilty of cosplaying Final Fantasy* On the Link issue, I've begun to think that PicminLink should be the only one allowed to cosplay him. She's perfect for it.... But...

The thing is, is that, cosplaying is supposed to be fun... That's why people do it. If all of these people who cosplayed all of these things that you hate to see, didn't cosplay at all.... there'd just be something missing from the con. And you never know, what you might see as a half-assed production of someone like... Kakashi or even the one I'm going as this year, Vincent, might be that person's very best attempt at the costume when looking at budget, time, and skill. Last year was my first con and I went as a FF character... And did the best I could, still, I couldn't get the right pants, or the material for them, and so I had to make some sacrifices... And so my outfit wasn't perfect....*shrug*But I didn't flaunt it online either.... And I'm still going to do my best this year too. Hopefully it can come up to par with your standards, but if not, it really doesn't matter, it's still just as fun.

I have to agree with you, there.  When I go to K-con (I say when because it won't be this year, it'll be next year), me and my friend are going as Sakura and Ino.  It's really overdone, yes, but I plan on spending as much time on it as I can, so it won't just fall into the same category as the half assed ones.  I hope.  But I needed a coustume that would be reletively easy to make because, as I said, this is my first cosplay ever which is on a strict budget, and I'm not going to be able to whip up Yunas wedding dress, or a Belldany outfit.  Also  I've ran around the internet, looking at all the Sakura and Ino cosplay, and critiqing them, finding out what I should do to make mine better.  Hopefully it'll work ^_^;;;

But if not, there's always the Chiyo-dressed-in-her-pengiun-costume from Azumanga Daioh that I hope to be making, also.  So kawaii!

I agree with Ayaroki about hair needing to be correct. Color, Length, natural hair not showing under the wig... its all gotta be done right.. Aya better help me with my blonde wig at kcon or I am gonna be hopeless.. at least my hair is short though.. I am even dying mine for my Hinata cosplay.

Over done from the net lookups ive done (first time cosplayer this year)
Naruto
Bleach
Yuna
Dante (devil may cry) (some ugly ones in there *shudders* i remember the sick looking girl that did that.. I love dante but that was bad.)
Rikku X2 Style

Now I have to say I have seen some awsome costumes like... Auron.. someone did a great cosplay of that at one con... but seriously people throwing all the scraps out of your quilting basket into a shirt.. that isn't cosplay...

Another thing... If you are alil heavier (like me) Please for the love of anime choose a cosplay that doesn't let it all hang out. I choose to play characters that wont scar my fellow cosplayers for life. Like... for an example of this.. Rikku X2 style.. it ruins it for me to see the potbelly rikku.... its bad enough seeing normal people dress like that in the summer but to see people that I should love and adore because they got up the guts to cosplay.. that just makes me sad... *cries into Ayaroki's shoulder*

One last thing I can think of... Shoes...  I have seen alot of decent to awsome cosplays ruined by dirty old sneakers. Inuyasha for example... the person did an awsome job.. until you looked at their feet and saw the sneakers.. I know its a lot of walking in a con and that means you need good footwear, but inuyasha could at least wear sandals even if they were just flip flops.. the dirty sneakers well.. they made me very sad  :(

Ok despite all this I still have to applaud all who choose to take the time to get dressed up and cosplay!

It seems like things have only gotten stale the veteran con goers… Being a first timer, I know I’ll be excited to see some of my favorite characters from animes and games that I’ve seen over the years all gathered in one place.

Who cares if their costumes aren’t perfect or over done? I know it’s been mentioned, but some people can’t afford to make good costumes, some don’t have the sewing skills, some simply don’t have the time, or maybe they haven’t been exposed to as much anime as you? Whatever the reason may be, I don’t think other people have the right to judge them so harshly or say if they can’t do a good costume, don’t do one at all, that’s b/s. They are going to have fun just like you, and if that means wearing just a head band and t-shirt, who are we to stomp on their parade?

I’m inspired now to go as Naruto, Inuyasha, and Ed so I can greet every one of you with a great big smile.

lmfao The thing is we realize not everybody has mad skills or money but just because you don't have those doesn't mean you need to be the same old generic cosplay character. I don't have mad skills, I don't have a ton of money... but I am gonna MAKE my own cosplay all the same.. Like I said there are basics that can kill a cosplay, Hair, Shoes, too much skin in skimpy clothing, dragging out scraps of whatever and calling it cosplay...

I have another to add to my list though... Kairi from KH2 ... that pink outfit.. ive seen it so many times.. there were uber ammounts of them running around in one con that i was looking at photos of.....thank goodness we are a smaller con with less copies runnin around

I'm not sick of seeing any particular characters...  But I am sick of seeing bad wigs.  That irks me for some reason.  Costumes that look really thrown together bother me a little too, but I can't complain too much about that.  I am horrid at sewing myself, but I try my best.  ^^'

Now, as a first-time cosplayer, I don't have that much ground to speak upon.
But, I have researched, and I'm making basically all of my costume, minus a few props.

And it's going to be from Naruto.

And it's going to be a Sexy no Jutsu of Kakashi.

I can understand people's grudges against over-done characters, and the fact that Kakashi never goes around in such a form.

But I am one of those people that does not have the time, skill or money to make a full-on costume.
Not that I won't try my best.

Now, I've never gone to a con, this Kumori is to be my first, but I've been interested in Anime/Manga for some years now, and read Naruto before all this Cartoon Network craze, et cetera. ((I still watch good old Subbed episodes online. ;)))

I think, as some have stated before, that the point to go to a con and dress up is to enjoy yourself.
I'm not trying to change anyones opinion, everyone is entitled to their own, but I do request that no one basically shuns another because they do not think that their costume is good enough. It's not that I think any of you will do anything like this, but just the thought, disturbes me.

I thought people go to these things to enjoy themselves, and rejoice in the fact that they have found bretheran of sorts.

That's all.

((I wrote more than intended. Sorry. ^_~))
Hmmm what to do next year?

Who saw the SnJ Kakashi?!
