Dragons were TOTALLY dinosaur bones that people found before they knew what dinosaurs were, and had to make a guess. And they guessed dragons. HOW ELSE YOU EXPLAIN THE DRAGON MYTH IN LIKE EVERY SINGLE SOCIETY
I do have a wand and full Gryffindor outfit though. Does that make me a wizard? I can go stand next to the T-Rex bones on display at OMSI right now and take a picture, that's kind of close.

But yes, I do definitely wish life were a musical. Life would be better. And showers would probably not have such godawful acoustics. Probably.

People who say that the U.S. is some kind of police state and that Democracy is some kind of evil Empire. There's nothing evil Empire-ish about an individual within a reasonable set of rules having the right to decide that they want to succeed or fail based on their own merits without  any government or organization helping or hindering their efforts. America was built on dreamers, thinkers, and doers after all. I grant you this country isn't perfect we have done some bad stuff in the past but we've more than made amends and frankly I think especially in this day and age we're the best thing going.

ANd that's my patriotic rant.

This is kinda off-topic, since it's not what grinds my gears, but a close friend absolutely HATES Cosette. You know how the musical has no clear villain, just "tyranny" itself? She says that Cosette is actually the villain: 1) Cosette causes the suffering of almost every major protagonist, and 2) her happiness typically comes at the expense of others.

I would totally, 100% agree with your friend. If Cosette hadn't been in the story things would have gone so much differently, and for the better.

I visited the Soviet Union in 1982. I cannot describe what a grim, broken-spirited people I saw, and I fully came to understand the fatalistic / nihilistic thread underpinning classic "Russian Humor"

People who think state-enforced rule over what can and cannot be private property, grinding away under a state-planned command economy, being asked "Who are you and where are you going" by state police every 10 miles, or at anytime in the city - - - can somehow be a good or even a tolerable thing.

You have 0% unemployment, yes, but gov't picks your job and you will be arrested if you quit, fail to show up, or don't work hard enough. See - we have no unemployment, if a factory cannot produce because of no demand, then they make you produce anyways, and store the stuff in out back in the field because one day someone will buy it, we hope. (The audacity of hope!) Then when you run out of materials the police make all of you show up anyway and sweep the floors twice a day - and you haven't gotten paid in weeks. (Neither have the police, btw.) This was known as "the workers' paradise!"

Or that living under Article 58 (hyperlink) can somehow be a good thing.

EDIT ADD:

It's like when someone says "I know, let's just kill everyone taller than 5ft 6in!" in a context where everyone knows it's a joke because the severity and outrageousness of the proposed solution is obvious to all. But given how easy it is to spot stuff like "Che" T-shirts around town, it's possible (for me) to imagine that there's a swath of people who don't realize the ultimate extent of the "obey and conform or die" horror they are proposing.

In the information age cyberbullying has become  an epidemic in this country. And it's not just happening to Gays and lesbians. it's happening to straight people who dress a certainw way, it's happening to the handicapped, it's happening to special needs students. And the recent suicides of those poor High Schoolers have shown us just how out of control it is. That's why on October 20th I'm asking that everyone here on the forums wear some kind of purple to show support for all those who have been the victims of all bullying.

Having been bullied myself in my past I understand the pain and suffering they're going through. So please everyone on October 20th wear something that's colored purple. And let's send a message that all bullying will not be tolerated, and all differences are to be celebrated.

Anyone who would anonymously post* such a map without regard for people's privacy has some severe -pathies. It doesn't matter which side they claim to be on, whether they're concern-trolling to "prove how awful the other side is", or whether they're griefing and claim they want to "prove that the other side dishes it out but can't take it".

Trolls, griefers, and bullies aren't truly on anyone's side. The world would be better if they got some professional help, stopped worrying about how other people are living their lives, and started fixing their own.

I find it ridiculous how bent out of shape people get about their beliefs.  Don't get me wrong: I have very strongly held beliefs about things like religion, politics, love, morality, etc.  But if someone disagrees with me?  I really don't care.  It doesn't bother me.  I'm not going to slander them or get bent out of shape to the point that I'm trying to cause them emotional or physical harm!

Prop. 8: Because I live here and can see day to day the couples who would be married if not for it. The possibility that I would have to go across the country to be legally "Married". Just that last jump between "Civil Union" and "Marriage" that the majority says, "You are a lesser citizen." with.

I have consolation in that I live in a rather open-minded county of the state. I attend a very politically-active school; a good portion of the student body wore purple today "Spirit Day" as to symbolize our support for the GLBTQ community among other things, and that no-one should give up just yet.

I'm 100% pro equal access to marriage, and several of the longest-term, stablest relationships I know involve two men or two women (and two of them involve two women and one man).
I believe that those who are ordained in a given faith should have the right to decide between which people of which genders (and which number of those people, btw)  they themselves specifically perform marriages, whether I happen to agree with them or not; the government should not be able to compel a priest/imam/rabbi/whatever to perform a ceremony to which they personally object. But at the same time I do not believe religion should be the frame through which the Constitution is presently legalistically interpreted, no matter how much religion may have been central to its initial framing. I do not believe a religious body should be able to declare any nonviolent element of anyone else's life invalid any more than any government body should be able to do so.

All that aside: I do not believe it to be an ethical tactic to reveal someone's home address against her or his will. However, donors to political causes are matters of public record, and if a business or other organization, church, etc., donates to a cause, the contact information for that corporate entity is already public domain. It is not uncommon to post lists of corporate contributors for purposes of boycotts, and I think that is legit.

Oh man, this totally reminds me what really grinds MY gears: people who say the United States is a Christian nation. That is so amazingly untrue that it's appalling. Many (not all, but a surprising number) of the founding fathers (including but not limited to Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine) weren't even particularly religious at all, labeling themselves Deists, which at the time was like saying you're an Atheist now. (Deism is the belief in a god-like being who created the world and the universe, but doesn't care what people do since they don't interfere with the affairs of man-- AKA, an impersonal god, which is pretty against the idea of the Christian god.) They were also pretty staunch about NOT having the US be based on any sort of religious dogma. So for an American to be against something based purely on their religious beliefs ("I'm against gay marriage because God says it's bad!") is so UN-American it's crazy.

Does this rant even make sense? I don't even know.

I'm pretty sure we're on the same page and I'm just quibbling over wording, but strictly speaking, what I find to be reprehensible isn't the revelation of addresses. As you noted, they're part of the public domain and people could look it up themselves. What I find reprehensible is the unspoken inference that it's okay to use that information to harass people based on disagreement with their beliefs. What other purpose is it likely to serve?

To me, that exists on the same continuum (though not nearly as extreme) as the severely *-pathic individuals who post the home addresses of abortion doctors and then gleefully post their murders as though it were an accomplishment.

It does.

But (once again) to quibble over wording, it's not un-American at all. Trying to impose your religious beliefs on others and come up with a rationalization for it flies in the face of the principles on which America was founded, but it's very American. What is true and what should be true are two very different animals.

And strictly speaking, simply being against something and trying to impose that belief on others are also very different animals. You can be against dying your hair pink based on your religious beliefs, and no one ought to care. It's only when you protect the sanctity of hair by banning others from dying theirs pink that you cross the line.

Those idiots that say the PS MOVE is a rip off of the wii when it's totally different and how people say Kinect or Playstation is copying one or the other because they both require cameras.

WELL NO. THE PS MOVE HAS EXTREMELY MORE ADVANDED TECHNOLOGY AND GETS IT'S AFFECT DIFFERENTlY. But ofcourse the wii and PS MOVE both do the same thing, except PS Move just does it better.

THE KINECT USES 3 different types of lenses/ camera thing! A normal webcam camera and 2 infered ones. The PS Eye is just a webcam.

It's a cool thing but would probably get boring later. Plus gaming shouldn't require TO MUCH exercise. Still very cool.

I played the PS move at Frys Electronics, very nice accuracy. Fun also.

As always, well said, Random. The abortion doctor extreme was on my mind when I wrote the post, but I had hoped to avoid opening the door to sidebar debates. A fun synchronicity: Deists were characterized by a belief in a "clock-maker G-d", who sets things in motion, then sits back and watches the story unfold. As I read your post, I was watching an anime with a character who had already reminded me of a clockmaker G-d: He writes a story to watch it come to life, which is actually propelled in part by clock gears (at least from the spoilers I read). Talk about grinding ones gears....

Okay, speaking as someone who disagrees with you, lemme explain why I feel the way that I do about it.

Marriage is a religiously based thing.  Many religions are opposed to homosexuality, and the many that aren't have their marriage traditions deigned for a man and a woman.

Do I oppose two people of the same gender being "together"?  No, not really.  Just because I don't agree with these lifestyles, no matter what reasons the "practicioners" may have for living them, it doesn't mean that I believe that they should be denied being legally bound to one another.

An option that I personally favor is the idea that everyone gets a civil union; that'd be where everyone is equal.  Once doing this, those that are religious can still uphold their belief systems while those that don't can still be together on a legal scale.

Another thing that really grinds my gears: lots of attention being focused on college football when it's completely B"C"S. ;D

Yeah, it is Ellen.  I'm not even sure how you could think that it's not.  Just because various denominations of different religions are accepting gay marriages now, it doesn't mean that it was always this way.  If it were, then there wouldn't be any arguments on the subject.

Justices were originally appointed by kings, such as Richard the Lionheart, who were seen as being ordained by God, in order to ensure that the laws were followed, only later to have the power to wed.  As for the captains, that priviledge was given to them so that they could preside over funerals for their fallen soldiers.  If I remember correctly, they also had to get approval from a king (or a queen too, I'd imagine).

I never said that it was; there's also the Greeks, and various eastern beliefs, such as Hinduism, tolerate it, though they don't approve of it.  What I did say was that none of these cultures or religions approved of gay marriages.  Many of them were fine with gay relations, some even encouraged it for various reasons, such as practicing for when they get married.  I've also heard that some of the pre-Islamic Arabs would use it as a form of mental relaxing when the men would go out on hunting or training expeditions, but I haven't seen any official sources on the subject, so I don't know if that's true or not.

I don't see it as being ironic, especially since crossdressing was already somewhat acceptable in mainstream America.  Ten years prior, "Some Like It Hot" came out.  Bob Hope would wear dresses on several occassions during his show in the 50's.  I think "our culture" would still be okay with otaku crossplay, probably about as much as it does now (which I wouldn't call an embracing).

I don't think the government should have anything to do with the word "marriage."  Everyone should have equal rights under the law, call it whatever you want, but don't call it marriage.  If you want to self-identify as "married" then go for it.  But given the controversy surrounding the word and the fact that it does seem to have very strong religious connections, I don't think it's worth the trouble.

Would you rather have equal rights or a word?  "Gay marriage" is a hard term for many people to accept.  I know, I know, everyone should be accepting and so on .. but that's an ideal world.

To those opposing gay marriage, I would like to point this out:

Section 1 of the 14th amendment to the US Constitution states that:

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

I cannot find written proof on the internet that says this other than what my political issues teacher has shown us in class but denying gay marriage violates this amendment BECAUSE marriage is a protected RIGHT under the liberty portion of section one, there is also a right of EQUAL protection. Denying homosexuals the right to marry violates this as well.
REGARDLESS of your RELIGIOUS views OR otherwise, allowing laws like Oregon's Measure 36 and California's Proposition 8 are CLEARLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL as stated in Amendment 14 of the US Constitution.

I apologize if this offends anyone, it was not my intention, but I feel very strongly on this subject.

Also: Calling it anything other than what it is, MARRIAGE, makes it something different. We cannot claim to be country that is for equality and the people if we allow majority factions to smother the rights of others and treat people differently.

Just watch tv. There's straight 'love' plastered all over it. And I am in no way a yaoi or yuri fangirl, I must say. I don't know if you were aiming that at me or someone in this thread or in general, but I'm simply an avid fighter against any sort of discrimination.


You know what grinds my gears? The fact that we are all people on the earth, and everyone forgets that. Who are we to judge others? Who are we to tell them who to be with, to marry, or to love?

That was not directed at anyone specific, but the world in general. If we just accepted each other, a lot of the hate would stop.

Well, my point is that if marriage truly is a religious institution, as so many claim, then the government has no job recognizing marriage and there needs to be a different term for the union of two people.  I think it would be ridiculous to have "marriage" for straight couples and "civil unions" for gay couples.

Gay couples are going to have to fight a battle regardless.  Why make it even more difficult by focusing on a word that stirs up so much strong emotion?

As I said, marriage is defined as a constitutional right, not a religious one. Like I said, I cannot find the exact document we were shown in class where it is defined as such, but this document states that people are given certain rights under liberty.
These rights include marriage, reproduction, and child-rearing among others.

I meant when we're at cons or on these forums.  YAOI is heard so much that I'm starting to think that it's an English word, not a Japanese acronym.  Yuri is also popular, but nowhere near as much (at least it looks that way to me).  Why aren't there more people declaring their love for straight stuff?  I just don't get it.

Well, my point is that if marriage truly is a religious institution, as so many claim, then the government has no job recognizing marriage and there needs to be a different term for the union of two people.

Again, everyone should have to get a civil union, for legal matters.  Marriages can preserved their religious ties.

You know what DOESN'T grind my gears?  THE TEXAS RANGERS DEFEATED THE NEW YORK YANKEES!!!

You know what grinds my gears atm? Not being able to afford a bike to have gears to grind. But! I just got my childhood roller skates out of storage!

Oh and another gear-grinder: Speckles of mold on white leather roller-skates. Anyone knowing how to fix such, please PM me!

Oh and not being able to afford to be at today's meeting. But! Skipping it makes Orycon more accessible....

My kitty is declawed (wedidn't do it, he was a stray that showed up on our front porch and pretty much gradually moved in), that's not the problem. The problem is he's my baby and I feel terrible about his panic attack trying to hop out.

I just felt like such a horrible person 'cause he was shaking and trying to get out. :c

Aw, poor kitty.
Today's gear-grinder...I only have 3 loads left to move out of my storage unit, but there was this spontaneous hail/windstorm that stopped me in my tracks & made me not want to leave the house!

It's the little things that grind my gears. Out of butter, just as I am about to start cooking. New and unique places to put dishes and utensils, where I have no clue. Telling me you miss me, but never call so I don't wake you up.

Remembering just as I'm about to leave for work, that the car really needs gas, but there isn't time to get some now. I just set my dog gone glasses down, now where are they! Realizing at step seven, that I forgot to do step three, and have to go back and redo it all.

Finding myself walking into no-win arguments, but was dumb enough to open my mouth anyway.

So don't come prancing in changing all my ideas because you think it would be better that way. I do things certain ways for an effing reason and it is usually a damn good reason so step off. If you want to do your ideas, make your own things. I know my plans for the whole thing and I don't really need your help in planning something that is already fully planned out.

YKWGMG? That I am utterly useless the next day if I stay up past the tipping point, which seems to be around 2:30 am. I had a ton I wanted to do today, but silly me, went to an anime night & a party before Rocky Horror last night thus didn't start making dinner until 2 am thus was up til 4 am....Lesson learned...not a good idea.

What grinds my gears this morning, was that the stupid cheap modem supplied by my DSL provider, always seems to have trouble after my wife is in bed. Then I either have to troubleshoot the problem in the dark, or wait until morning. But it's still a cheap modem that is gonig to do this from now until forever.

YKWGMG? Waking up with sore lower back/rear/hips from scrubbing moss off my pal's driveway.I really need the $ from my under-the-table gardening (etc.) job, but it renders my body so sore that I can't focus as comfortably on the other things I need to do.

YKWGMG? Lately, Apple.

I've been a Mac person for two decades because of my perception that the Mac OS is a lot less intrusive than Windows. (I suspect that's why most of us stick with it, despite the fact that the boxes are considerably more expensive.) So what did they start doing several months ago? Demanding that I re-install Safari, poxy ad-ridden crashprone piece of app that it is, otherwise they wouldn't let me use the iTunes store. Okay, fine, whatever. I didn't buy there for the most part anyway, because they rarely have the stuff I want.

So what do they do with the latest update? Start demanding that I re-install Safari every time I click a song. What the #3!!? It took most of an hour of experimenting to figure out how to make it stop. (It involved disabling the iTunes store entirely.) I would've had to switch music software and eventually needed to buy a new MP3 player if I hadn't found the setting, because it was pretty much unusable.

Is mandatory browser "market share" really worth pissing off your core customers, guys?

@ random, wow, how horrible. Makes me glad I never accepted any of the "upgrades" iTunes (et. al) kept offering me. <--the word scares me after watching the Cybermen on Doctor Who ;)

Sniffles. They can be inconvenient and socially awkward, and make me sound like I'm about to weep, even when I'm happy albeit I did not get much sleep. On the plus side, they make me think of Snuffaluffagus, which when I was a kid was Big Bird saying "snuggle-up with us".

I play a shaman in my group's D&D game on the weekends, and I'm always having to replenish the party's HP. I wonder if it's anything like that?


(The games can get pretty exciting... at least until the rogue starts searching every square inch of the floor for traps. That kinda grinds my gears.)

Somewhere there is a comedy sketch waiting to be written in which "4-Chan" is misheard as "FORTRAN" by a teen's parent, who then innocently waxes nostalgic about coding in terms that sound to the appalled teen like innuendo. ;-) As for old-school, I got through Honors termpapers on a Smith-Corona PWP-6. Basically an electric typewriter with a 1-line memory. So you could word-process via scrolling, but only for 1 line, and only if you hadn't hit enter to print that line yet. So YKWGMG? I'd still use it, but my over-cleaning ex threw out its power cord pack, and I have no clue whether / where I can find another.

BACK ON TOPIC - Too Literally: YKWGMG: Old-style manual transmissions with no synchronizing rings. You have to know how to double-clutch. 25 years ago I could do it, but I'd probably GRIND GEARS today if I had to drive one of those 'legacy' beasts...

The last Smith Corona I saw was a .30cal M1 Garand style rifle at a collectors' event.
Smith Corona switched to making rifles in WW2.

Your story about the one-line memory reminds me of the Linotype machines (one 'line of type') using and recycling babbitt metal, or other low-temp bismuth-lead alloys to cast and print lines of newspaper copy...

I think I type very well but everyone makes mistakes sometimes. It grinds my gears like crazy when someone corrects stupid things, it's like them just going "I'M BETTER THAN YOU HAHA".

People Celebrating/Decorating/Advertising/Exploiting Christmas BEFORE Thanksgiving

This is Ally's #1 Biggest pet peeve, of all time, and could possibly be worse than forgetting her Birthday.

Background: I was born November 23rd 1987, which is a Monday, the Monday which precedes Thanksgiving in fact. As the first born of the youngest children in both my parents families, I was a special little baby and being born during an already instituted season of family togetherness meant my Birthday became a center of the family calendar. People I may not see for months at a time were always available for my Birthday. My 2nd Birthday was particularly special as it actually fell on the Thanksgiving Day. Every 6 years since then I get to have Thanksgiving for my Birthday. As I grew up I gained a very strong respect for Thanksgiving and what it mean to our Country and our society. As someone who has both Naitve American and Anglo-Saxon heritage it is a great memory for unity and for the establishment of civilized and prosperous nationalism. We give thanks for what we have and bless our friends, neighbors, family and strangers that they may have all they need.

Before I begin my rant; know that I LOVE Christmas with a firey passion that cannot be contained. I am not a humbug in the slightest! I just think everything has it's time... and Christmas shant come before Thanksgiving.

Chapter 1: "Christmas is TWO FRIGGEN MONTHS away!"

I am coming up on what some call a "Golden" Birthday. I will be 23 on the 23rd of this month. And that falls pretty close to my favorite holiday; THANKSGIVING. However, what I have seen around the Walmarts, the Safeways the Pier1Imports', FAOSchwartzs, the Macys (More on them later) is CHRISTMAS decor, CHRISTMAS sales, CHRISTMAS adverts!

CHRISTMAS! CHRISTMAS! CHRISTMAS! And it starts on November 1st! A whole 55 DAYS before Christmas even occurs! Does it really require 55 DAYS to remember Christmas? Is the Industry of consumerist prize and gift giving SO DESPERATE for funding that it needs 55 DAYS to propagate what was once a Pagan/Judeo-Christian Holiday? A RELIGIOUS EVENT? I think we, the masses and generation of 5 second attention spans should no better! We can't contemplate Christmas this early! It will drag on and be devoured before it ever begins! And yet, the stores are filled with CHRISTMAS carols and laughing Santa's and Candy Canes well before the TREES are even available! TWO FRIGGEN MONTHS? What in the name of all that is good and gracious makes us/marketing companies think that business model is more attractive than there normal business model of 2 week windows with a pre-week viral notion and a post-week recouperation advert?

Chapter 2: "We are NOT the Nation of Christmas, we are the United States of America"

School children can tell you; THANKSGIVING is a National Holiday, it is a statement of the unity we share with our brothers from other mothers - the tradition of camaraderie and thankfulness that transcends race, status or knowledge. We give THANKS for once in the year, as a nation, for our freedoms, for our families and for our food.

Yet this NATIONAL celebration, that requires no belief in GOD or JESUS or SANTA or a the GODS/GODDESS of THE SOLSTICE is underrated, disproportionate to a religious and consumerist holiday that happens well after it! A Holiday at the same level as the FOURTH OF JULY which we celebrate in drunken abundance, is under-written for an International Celebration.

We are the ONLY country that Celebrates THANKSGIVING on this day, for this reason. No one else celebrates the day that American Pilgrims were thoughtfully and selflessly invited into the open arms of the Natives and treated with the kindness and the familiarity we can only dream of achieving in ourselves. We look to those memories as HERITAGE. No one else does that. Other countries have similar events and Holidays, but this one is OURS. If we do not Celebrate it, who will?

Chapter 3: "There is room in the Calendar and Store Shelves for us ALL"

All I'm asking for is a little more respect for such a special Holiday. Your grocery stores attempt to bridge the gap with week long sales on Turkey and Canned Cranberry Sauce... but the BLACK FRIDAY ads get more respect than these!

The top Thanksgiving Day story this year? Not that people are raising money for the homeless and hungry to support our nation, Not that Republicans and Democrats will sit down and eat a meal to foster bi-partisanship in the government. No the top story about Thanksgiving? THE PRICE OF A TURKEY HAS GONE UP.

Really? REALLY? I mean REALLY? Is that what Thanksgiving has come down to? The price of your fowl??? Forgive me whilst I go cry this atrocity on the roof tops! Even Charlie Brown himself would be appalled!

It's simple;
       Nov 1st - Thanksgiving morning is the Celebration of our Nations forerunners and the Natives who showed us that we have SO MUCH to be thankful for, and that we owe it to our neighbors to share that bounty and rejoice in the harvest. Unity, Thankfulness, Remembrance. Valuable traits for our children and us to remember.
       Thanksgiving Day - December 25th is for The Celebration of the Christmas/Holiday season. Hang your stockings, trim the house with mistletoe and garland - buy a tree, sing Christmas carols, buy a yule log, get some dreidels and a Hanukkiya or just enjoy the solstice air.

Chapter 4: "It isn't Christmas Season until Macy's/Santa says so"

        There was a time, when the largest department store in America, Macy's was on my side about this. They held of Christmas Lane and all the Decorations, ready and waiting to be put up Thanksgiving Eve. So that on Black Friday, when shoppers arrived the Magic of Macy's would instantly be coated with SugarPlums and CandyCanes. It was a perfect marketing scheme that tide in with one of the biggest events Macy's puts on; THE MACY'S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE.

        Historically, you knew it was the CHRISTMAS Season once Santa appeared on his sleigh in your television, laughing on your radio, or right in front of you as he made his way down 34th Street. In fact, this is one of the hallmarks of the 2nd longest running parade in the history of America.

        Yet Macy's has shewed away from their traditions. Now Christmas Corner and the Holiday decor start even BEFORE Halloween is over! And yet the tradition of Santa Clause remains... they still "say" its the official start of the Christmas/Holiday season... but they don't give Santa the satisfaction anymore. Like a puppet Monarch, he's only their for show. Destroying generations worth of traditions and memories in the process.

Chapter 5: "A Lengthy Conclusion"

         I growl every time I have to enter a store that willingly participates in the desecration of Thanksgiving, by shunting it off to a back corner of the store or 2 shelves worth of Cornucopia. I boycott most stores outright from Nov 1st - the day of Thanksgiving. But I am by no means unreasonable. I'm willing to compromise with the mass market moguls of the world:

         If we could go back to starting the "Holiday Season" Thanksgiving Day, and decorate the night before, and make the Thanksgiving weekend the official start of your holidays, I'd be okay with that! My family personally begins playing Christmas music in the house the MOMENT Santa appears on the screen! From then on till the big day my Car plays NOTHING ELSE. I decorate to the NINES and spend the season in a glitter gorgeous wonderland! And because it lasts just 1 month long, I never get tired of the songs, the imagery or the smell of cinnamon or chestnuts or candy canes wafting in my house! I LOVE IT that much more! I buy into the Christmas Eve madness and I participate in the sales...

BUT ONLY AFTER MY BELOVED THANKSGIVING!

I, too, lament "holiday" blitz beginning so early, albeit for different reasons.
I have worked as a crisis counselor in multiple clinics in multiple states.
"The holidays" are when the most domestic violence incidents and the most suicides occur.
I believe the advertising blitz and the inundation of Xmas music etc. feel inescapable to most and that for those who feel lonely, alienated, have lost family members by death/divorce/child protective services, who have addiction issues, who are homeless, and/or who are mentally ill and/or otherwise disabled, it is easily the very worst time of the year. Couple that with how many folks don't realize they have seasonal affective disorder and it's a very scary time when many become desperate and desolate. Especially in the middle of the economic recession when so many can't afford the things constant bombardment of advertising makes them feel guilty for not being able to afford....It's horrible. I can't wait for it to be over....which is not to say anything negative about the holidays themselves. Just about the constant inundation of the commercialization of them.
(BTW, this is not about growing up Jewish. We had "Chanukah stockings" and a "Chanukah bush" and my mom had an electric Santa--wearing a Yarmulkah--in the window next to an electric menorah. I have relatives by marriage who are Catholic and Unitarian, and 1 relative who converted to Quaker along with his wife who had been Southern Methodist. The Catholic relatives would have us over for Xmas dinner.)

YKWGMG? Washington is banning alcoholic energy drinks because 9 stupid college students, none of whom were 21 or older, died.  They were morons, and those of us who know how to drink these things have to lose something we enjoy.  grrrrrr.....

YKWGMG? That one of those light bulbs I got at an indoor gardening store, the kind that look like swirls (compact fluorescent), caught on fire at my house a few months ago.

No, but I know what you're talking about.I've looked into it, as well as Vit D supplementation but never gone beyond just sunlight and exercise.

Lol I'm severely vitamin D deficient. XD I've had to take 500% the daily value every day for the last five months. I went up 14 points from where I was but my doctor's afraid it's gunna get a lot worse since it's Winter.

YKWGMG? Inability to swallow pills...including the calcium / vit D they've been trying to get me to take for a year due to my own deficiency in D. So far instead I've been gardening (even in the cold/rain) and sometimes drink Emergen-C.

I'm sorry, but when you snap at a customer saying, "What do YOU want?"... that is unacceptable. And I told her hey; that was kinda snappy and everything is cool. And I got told off.

Maybe I'm just delusional with my "young age", but you shouldn't be a B to customers.

Those could all be grounds for termination.  I know it was when I used to work for Taco Bell, AM PM, & McDonald's; I think the first one is the only one that would most likely occur at my current job, thusly making it the one that would matter.

If I recall, alcoholic energy drinks can be dangerous because the caffeine/whatever else they put it in it is an upper, and the alcohol is a downer. Mixing uppers and downers can be bad. O:

Some of my favorite-tasting, favorite-consistency foods leave me feeling not perfect afterwards. Today: Awesome Greek yogurt with figs. My mom has lactose intolerance, I wonder if I might have a mild form thereof or something. Never had this as a kid, can it come on later? (Also I was ok with peanut butter as a kid and now my tummy can't have that either.)

Well, from what I've looked up, the main problem is that people who drink caffeinated alcoholic beverages think they're in much better condition than they actually are.

Well, from what I've looked up, the main problem is that people who drink caffeinated alcoholic beverages think they're in much better condition than they actually are.

Because they're STUPID!!!

...but they shouldn't be available for kids, though; I'll agreee with that.

Some of my favorite-tasting, favorite-consistency foods leave me feeling not perfect afterwards. Today: Awesome Greek yogurt with figs. My mom has lactose intolerance, I wonder if I might have a mild form thereof or something. Never had this as a kid, can it come on later? (Also I was ok with peanut butter as a kid and now my tummy can't have that either.)
Please forgive if this is TMI.

I personally refuse to believe something a person would have to sit down and analyze at length could actually be TMI. But that could just be me.

This is a country, after all, where someone took the time to figure out how to play record after record backwards in search of alleged hidden Satanist messages ("backmasking") to be offended by. (^_~)

Not all of his songs are like that; in fact, my favorite songs that he did were: a remake of "Sweet Dreams are made of These," and a song about a doctor name Gunn.  (Yeah, I actually researched it; that was his name, Dr. Gunn).

Oh, I forgot about "Beautiful People"!  That's a great song!

Speaking of "Sweet Dreams", I had a tshirt of the Eurythmics' Annie Lennox looking very butch with an orange crew cut, a bondage mask, making a fist, with the album title, "Touch" listed under her photo. I was told if I didn't turn it inside out I would have to leave school or be suspended. I refused. I said I would either go topless or proceed to band class. Needless to say I went to band class (this being freshman year of high school). Director Elton Eisele asked me why I was late to class. I informed the class. The cute senior fellow-clarinetist girl I had a crush on actually cheered for me. Highlight of that month for me.

Did you hear about all those kids that got in trouble for wearing Sex Pistols t-shirt?  They did it in support of a kid that got in trouble for wearing a Sex Pistols t-shirt .. in high school.  I dunno.  I don't see the issue.  Then again, I wear shirts that say "Goatwhore" (a band) on them and stuff.  (Of course, having said that, I wouldn't wear a shirt like that to say, my nieces' school or something.. hehe..)

Kids need limits, though.  Some limits are ridiculous (such as high schoolers who can't wear Sex Pistol t-shirts), but I think some are essential, and missing.

YKWGMG? Hearing people say that the Jackie Chan version of The Karate Kid shouldn't have been called by that name since it isn't even karate, even though it keeps the same message and is part of the franchise.

So cute!

YKWGMG? Those last-minute pre-con jitters that turn tummies into pretzels.

And then having to drive a couple hours alone with those.

When people are totally inconsiderate and make you wait around for them just to never show up and leave you all dressed up for no reason on a Friday night... and then decide to act like nothing happened, never call to explain themselves, but have the time to two days later send a generic Facebook event inviting you to their "oh man baller" party at the club coming up chock full of their friends who hate you for no reason.

YES this is very specific, but FFFFFFFFF I'm just so full of RAGE... I'm gonna go breathe fire in the corner now don't mind me.

YKWGMG? People who pronounce things wrong on TV. Like once i heard an AD for a Mario game, and they said it like Mary-oh. And once i saw an AD for some Avatar: the last airbender product, and they pronounced the A's in Appa's name as you would say int he word "yak".
I don't know why but that bugs me like crazy.

Another things that grinds my gears is when teens (ages 13 to 16 or so) talk about "oh I totally had sex when i was 14(or younger)!" like it's a good thing. In my opinion, people should wait AT LEAST untill they're 18 or over to have sex. Teens now days just can't seem to tell the difference between love, lust, and being in love and that pisses me off because people tend to group me in with said teens.

Oh, and making them feel neglected by leaving them out of the picture when talking to their bff about the shopping trip. =_=

Thank you for asking.....She was as of when I left for work this morning *praying*

Apparently my phone from which I had been trying to post gave out while I was mid-message. These were the vet receptionist's errors (it wasn't the vet but the receptionist):
(1) Dispensed wrong size tube of product for pet's weight;
(2) Listed correct size tube on receipt/ charged me for the more expensive-sized product;
(3) SOLD ME A PRODUCT THAT HAD EXPIRED IN JUNE OF 2009.
A YEAR AND A HALF AGO!

So then when I left voicemails with those details what did they do? They left a replacement of the correct dose-- outside in a bag with no name on it on the back porch of the office.

(a) Anyone could've stolen it.
(b) Any random animal could have poisoned itself with it if it bit through the tube.
(c) I didn't get the message for about 32 hours, during which time the temperature might've dropped to the point the product became unusable.

I have to
(1) Find out how low the temp got Saturday night,
then (2) contact the manufacturer to find out if being out in the elements could have rendered the product inert or ineligible for use.

All in all (as Queen Victoria would say in the Doctor Who episode "Tooth & Claw"--best known as the origin of the Torchwood Institute--) "I am not amused."

I'm just going to pray my cat is okay. I got another clinic's receptionist to sell me the product...In fact, when I showed them the expired tube from the first clinic, it was this receptionist who caught that it was the wrong quantity for my cat's weight.

I can't afford a lawyer, nor an extra "get-acquainted" visit for my cat to a new vet.

But needless to say I. Was. Wiggin'.

Corporate America.

I just got a call a few hours ago to let me know that there had been a flood at my storage unit. On Sunday. The employees started calling tenants immediately when it happened, but were told to stop by management because they were afraid it might make them liable somehow. The big important management of the company showed up the next day, got all their stories straight, and then left the one person per shift who normally works there to try to call and deal with hundreds of customers. Knowing that people were getting so angry about the delay that the employees were being threatened, no less. (After all, if one of them gets shot, that's why companies routinely buy life insurance on them. Nothing important is at stake, like money.)

So yeah, they finally got to me today, and now I've got books and drawings and papers and old letters spread out everywhere to dry... about a third of the paper keepsakes I've collected over a lifetime are somewhere between damaged and ruined. If they had let their employees keep calling (or maybe *gasp* brought in more people to help them) the first day, even the second day, virtually none of it would have been harmed.

I really, really don't get why society still considers religious epithets and synonyms for body parts and functions to be the most obscene, unspeakably vile concepts there are. 1) This is the 21st century, not 18th century Puritan New England. 2) We have much better words now to describe policyheads who should upsell themselves and go to retail.

I retract my previous to replace it with a new one... my real mom. No matter how awesome the day is, she's either drowning herself in how sick she is, how she has only 3years to live, or putting herself in the hospital. She's rarely a Positive person.

I love her still and worry, don't get me wrong, but when thats all you hear... for pretty much half of your life... it makes you tired of hearing it.

That's devastating. And I know the feeling. I spent 14 years living in basement apartments. Never got too hot nor too cold and energy bills were reasonable. But each flooded multiple times- one even with sewage (which led to my immediately giving notice). As soon as I left the scumbag tore out a wall in which he'd known there was black mold but never bothered to tell me. Now I have INSANELY high heat bills even though I only heat my cat's room when I'm out and only to 64, and the living room to 60 when my coat, hat and gloves don't suffice to let me sleep.

That's devastating. And I know the feeling. I spent 14 years living in basement apartments. Never got too hot nor too cold and energy bills were reasonable. But each flooded multiple times- one even with sewage (which led to my immediately giving notice). As soon as I left the scumbag tore out a wall in which he'd known there was black mold but never bothered to tell me. Now I have INSANELY high heat bills even though I only heat my cat's room when I'm out and only to 64, and the living room to 60 when my coat, hat and gloves don't suffice to let me sleep.

Maybe we could combine our posts into "Jerk--- landlords"?  ;)

My landlords seem nice. I am praying they will let me proceed. Perhaps they are just waiting to see the papers come in the mail before they reply. I have texted, phoned, and emailed, so I am trying hard not to read into not hearing back....

Granted that homophobia is a slang term that gets thrown around too frequently, I do not see how anyone in the world has the right to judge the relationship between two consenting adults. This grinds my gears.


Using the word 'gay' in place of 'bad' or 'stupid' grinds my gears.

And people who needlessly draw attention to themselves for negative reasons grind my gears.
I miss 2010.

Rem, if you ever wanted to do an Ood cosplay, you would have to sculpt and cast a mask yourself. As far as I know the only Ood masks that exist are the ones made for BBC Wales by their proprietary creature workshop (and a few made by fans who have done what I've just said, made one themselves).

@ Aaron, I think of them as different. I think of things that grind my gears as things that bring forward momentum to an unintended, unexpected, annoying, and possibly hazardous halt. But I can choose how I react to those things. Sometimes, I'm not able to stop myself from reacting with anger, but usually, I either am able to retract anger, to prevent it from happening, or that's just not the reaction that the pet peevy situation elicits. So, I've posted often in this thread, and never in the other thread.

YKWGMG? My kitty, he's such a little brat. He'll knock (beat his paws against repeatedly) on the kitty door when he's not allowed outside (they're kept in at night) and wakes me up really early when he's hungry (every morning).

I mean I love him and he's super adorable, but man he's annoying. xD

As someone who generally likes to see the best in people automatically and assumes everyone's cool and awesome, finding out some people are really absolutely unpleasant is so awful. ;_; Thankfully though, most of the people I talk to at work are generally pretty cool. You just get the occasional bad egg...

But that is the reason why I miss working in Adult Novelty stores. People came as either: 1. Nervous humorous 2. Nervous quiet 3. Open or 4. Way too open.

YKWGMG? "Anti-bacterial soap". Not only is it likely doing more harm than good, but it is *so* harsh on my skin. Makes it crack and bleed (sorry if that is TMI). When con hotel bathrooms have it as the only option I end up having to wear gloves by the end of con. I literally have to start bringing my own soap to cons and to work because my hands just can't take the abuse anymore. I have to literally soak my hands in organic olive oil to recover. (You can imagine that this amuses my cat.) Well the dermatologist recommended solid Crisco (vegetable shortening) but I don't have any of that laying around. Anyway. Triclosan is the main ingredient. It is like Nonoxyl-9. With Nonoxyl-9, a harsh chemical spermicide, the drug trials with prostituted women in Africa showed that it actually *increased* transmission of HIV. Why? Because the chemical was so harsh that it was causing multiple microabrasians in delicate ladyparts, thereby providing an opening to the bloodstream through the skin. (I know about this stuff because I used to translate Spanish for an HIV Testing Clinic and I now work for an HIV Specialist MD.) Triclosan is the same. For those who react to it, it causes breaks in the skin, thereby *increasing* risk of exposure/contagion/infection.

<<EDIT>> It also is a sad statement of the racism and sexism of the medical industry that trials of products in life and death situation are often performed on women of color in 3rd World countries (or, like the Tuskegee Syphilis trials, on men of color in the U.S.). My gear grinder and tear inducer atm is that a dear best pal just lost his brother/godson to a heroin OD tonight. I have written earlier that I try very hard not to hate but atm I HATE drugs. So much. Such a pointless waste.... I am straightedge. May this person and all those lost to drugs (ODs, disease, suicide, violence, car wrecks, etc.) rest in peace.

YKWGMG?  When organizations like the FDA and DEA lump dangerous drugs like Opiates, Methaphetamines, and Stimulants into the same category as Serotonin and Dopamine enhancers, so when kids experiment with Marijuana and Mushrooms and don't experience any adverse effects, they think that things like Opium, PCP, Speed, and Heroin aren't going to hurt them either.  Then they die from overdoses.  It's also pretty messed up that three of the six most addictive and dangerous drugs out there (Nicotine, Alcohol, and Caffeine; the other three are Heroin, Meth, and Crack/Cocaine) are legal and fairly inexpensive.  So kids grow up thinking that Cannabis--a plant used medicinally in controlled quantities to treat a plethora of diseases and which produces large amounts of tetrahydracannabinol, a dietary complement to naturally produced endocannabinol, with the effect of dopamine production regulation (I'll leave it up to you to look up any of those terms you might be unfamiliar with)--is dangerous and will lead them into an unhealthy and unproductive lifestyle, and that Nicotine and Alcohol--deadly, highly addictive poisons which the body naturally attempts to reject--are okay as long as you don't do it around kids and you're above a certain arbitrary age limit.  Talk about a backwards society. :/

Whether you're a strait-edge or a wild raver kid who's willing to try anything, do yourself and the rest of the world a favour and read some legitimate medical material and properly educate yourself before you make a decision to take, condone, or condemn ANY drug.  Legal, illegal, recreational, prescription, over-the-counter...ANY mind- or health-altering substance can have adverse effects if not taken intelligently and you should always be aware of every benefit and every detriment that anything you take or refuse to take represents.  Stay safe and stay savvy folks.

^ Unfortunately, learning and understanding what is beneficial, neutral, or genuinely dangerous takes time. So most people are content to trust "authority" (TV, magazines, newspapers, product labels, government agencies) and never read for themselves. Even though if you read carefully, you'll recognize that almost all of it comes from / is written by the same source - the corporations who run the show and who profit by you not reading.

That said, I fully agree with you about the fact that nicotine and alcohol are highly addictive and are responsible for FAR more deaths than illegal "drugs" - I've read the studies and done the math as well. But I wasn't aware that caffeine could be classified as being in the same league. Any good links I could peruse?

For reference, 18 U.S.C. § 875(c) states: "Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication containing any threat to kidnap any person or any threat to injure the person of another, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both." If that's not clear enough: You don't have to actually harm someone to get in trouble for making Internet threats. The threat itself is enough to go to jail for, and it's a federal crime.

If whoever it is genuinely is reading this forum, I'd strongly recommend that you back down and forget about whatever grievance you think you have. Posthaste.

@ Chan & DS, Thank you for the sympathy. Understandably, I have not yet been able to reach my friend to know how he is handling this, let alone his sweet 12-year-old daughter. I love them both.
@ Tofu: Well-said, I agree with most of what you said. However, I have seen people waste their lives away lazily on substances that maybe aren't harming them physically but are reducing their motivation to do things such as get legal work or finish school. Folks who "wake and bake", are, IMHO, just as addicted as folks who can't hold a civil conversation until their 2nd cup of coffee, even if the addiction is not neurochemical but psychological.
As a medical social worker and translator I saw many people die of sequelae to alcohol and/or tobacco addictions.
I do know of many folks addicted to caffeine and it does raise blood pressure.

Yeah, I've had some friends get pretty lost to weed addiction.  They usually come back (after running out of money, losing their apartment, and losing most of their friends), but it's still not pretty.  Certainly beats alcoholism or a heroin overdose though.

Caffeine's not particularly dangerous but has some adverse effects from too frequent and too large of doses, including high blood pressure, stunted growth (if taken during growing periods), and pretty serious addiction.  The withdrawl that addicts get from caffeine is ridiculous.  The body's quick to build a dependency on that stuff.

I've only flown by absolute necessity for several years - even drove all the way from Seattle to LA for Anime Expo a few years ago.

When I was moving from NYC to Seattle, we had to fly out the day after the Northeast Blackout. LaGuardia, big as it is, was literally packed with stressed-out people whose flights had been cancelled. And apparently they were stressing out the TSA people too. So to punish us for being in a hurry and for having a carry-on pet, one of them took the time to frisk my hamster for weapons.

No, I'm not kidding.

(I'm lucky she was dazed from the unexpected jostling and chaotic environment. Otherwise, we'd have both ended up in Guantanamo when she bit him for being a stranger who was grabbing her. Rikka was a rescue, and no matter how much love she was shown, had a nasty temper from the abuse at her previous home... only hamster I've ever met that wasn't full of unconditional love.)

Wow. That is just wrong on so many levels. Do you still have Rikka? And Tofu, granted that addictions that are primarily psychological *might* be easier *on the body* to quit (vs., e.g., barbituates, going cold turkey from which rather than tapering off of which can literally kill someone). But, to use the most extreme tragedies of pot use from my own life: My pal is no less dead from his single-car driving while intoxicated accident for it being pot not heroin on which he was wasted. My acquaintance is no less dead from being shot in the head during a gang drug deal gone wrong when I was 14 for it being pot not crack that he dealt. These are among the reasons I support only medical use and decriminalization, not legalization for recreational use. Also my own 7-year common-law marriage was no less destroyed by his addiction being pot than if it had been any other substance. Addictions to substances are needless strategies. Personally if I sip a toast on New Year's that'd be only my 2nd even sip since March.
