When I was at Kumoricon this year I noticed that another convention here in Portland had a booth set up there. This convention is called Orycon. It's a convention for fans of science fiction and fantasy. It's taking place this year at the Doubletree Hotel near Lloyd Center (The site of K-con 08') on November 28th-30th.

As an aspiring writer of science fiction and fantasy I plan on attending this convention. I'm doing so not only because I want to check out the panels there but because I submitted something to their writer's workshop, the first 30 pages of the first book in a steampunk trilogy I'm working on.

What I'd like to know from all you forum peeps out there is, are you planning on experiencing all of the sci-fi and fantasy awesomeness that is Orycon by attending?

I'm going! Likely manning a Kcon Fan Table during the day. Someone better be able to cover me if they do a Buckaroo Banzai panel while I am 'on-duty'.

I was a bit bored last time i went, to be honest. Though I enjoyed getting smashed on the special drinks the bar mixes for the con. They serve Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters.

Rathany, if you need folks to staff a KC table, I most likely could help & would really enjoy that. PM me with info about hours, & what it would cost to attend in that capacity, & whether it would be just giving info or taking prereg's

I need to re-check a few details on that. They've told me ... but I forgotted. We don't get badges from them for having a table, but I don't think we need them just to man the table. Based on Gamestorm I think we can just man them whenever? But I think we'd want people there from 10-5 at least.

I'm going to try and make it. The kid I work with said he'd cover Thanksgiving for me if I got scheduled.

I'd love to go if I could but being on Thanksgiving is a little tricky. Friday is out of the question but I'll see about going Saturday or Sunday and helping to man the Kumoricon table.

Creation Station is going sci-fi! Yes we are going to have a room at Orycon. The details are still being finalized, but looks like we're going to have the Washington room in the Executive Meeting Center for whatever hours we want on Orycon-Friday. (11/27). We strongly urge folks to come participate-- & by that we mean relax & hang out, enjoy our programming -- or offer some of it yourselves! Yes, we can still add new panels! Let me know asap if interested! Andi & Guy, that goes for the two of you, of course, as well, if there is anything you'd wanted to run that for whatever reason isn't scheduled anywhere else! <3

so, if there are people chillin outside, like there was at k-con last year, i will totally come hang out, and see people, but if i come over there, and nobody is outside, i will not be there long.

i really would like to go, and honestly, if i had 55 dollars, i would, but the fact of the matter is that i do not.

I went to a Westercon where they had three 80-something year old fans who told of going to the VERY FIRST "World Con," taking 2 weeks to drive cross country and back.
People did costuming based on book characters, so it was a lot more challenging to guess "who" it was.

These guys met and spoke with pulp fiction greats like E.E. "Doc" Smith.
This is kinda like saying you got to go fingerpainting with Leji Matsumoto when you were both in kindergarten...

I will be doing an AMV Clinic Friday night, and if TCL, SMT, RTS, MoR, ANY of you Editors want to 'crash it' I can probably sign you up as a guest ... Canot yet promis but I will try if someone sez they want to visit and present for a while.

I've heard that Ory is notoriously hardcore about anything that could be considered a weapon. As in, not even peacebonding is okay, just leave it at home.

To back up a notch, Wow, Guy, that's an amazing bit of con history. Reminds me of the couple years at Sakuracon in which we had Dan, the Vice, then later the Chair, as one of our Fanfic panelists, talking about what it was like collaborating on & beta'ing fanfics back when they had to do it by snail mail, then newsletters, like getting feedback every 2 weeks or so rather than in real time. Then there were BBS's & then listservs. Valuable historical perspectives from those who put the genre in forward motion....I <3 cons

& Wow this was a huge breakthrough: My most-of-the-time partner of the past 2 years, who has refused to come to cons with me, actually sounded impressed with some of our CS Orycon prog! THERE IS HOPE! I pray

Hey gang - I ran AMVs last night from 9:30pm till 5:40am today!

We had a BLAST!
( A slightly different selection for an SF oriented con, slightly more ST references, also a few more that use older anime.)

Update: I ran 10pm-2am SUNDAY night for con staff at the dead-dog room.
