K-Lite - looking for a good home
« on: September 15, 2009, 01:34:42 am »
We are hoping that people will come to us saying that their school can host it and provide [X] sq. ft. of space and let us know what rules for vending and food would be.  We need to at least be able to sell Kcon registrations and have space for our content.  Additionally, it would be nice if we could sell ramune and pocky to recoup our costs and be able to bring in 2 or 3 small vendors.  We do expect that the school club that works with us to bring in this event will help promote the event.  Usually, we design and print the promotional materials and the club distributes it.

Yes, we've been at PSU for the last two years and that has been good.  But there is no reason why it can't be at a different venue this year.  Help us make this free event happen by finding us space :)

I still perfer if it was at PSU again, especially since it's easy to get to, thanks to the max green line which drops people off ON campus.

Would OSU be OK or is that to far away for most people?

Even if we don't go to OSU, having the info together might be helpful.  Have we ever done an outreach out that way?

Also, just noting, so far no one has come to us saying 'My school can do this.  X numbers of rooms and Y terms on the rest of the stuff'.

We can't exactly call PCC Sylvania, for example and say "Hi, we are not students here and don't even have contact info for the clubs, but how can we do a club sponsored event at your campus?"  And Sylvania does have lots of lovely space in it's student center that we could fill.  Don't know as much about other campuses.  We have a good selection of area schools.  Anyone go to any of them and have leads for us?

Corvallis, which makes it a little further away than our mini-events have been.

Well, dang :/

Now you see our dilemma :)  Any why we need students from other schools, too.  Our best bet of doing an event (that is free to you) is to partner with a school club that can get the space.

If anyone wants, I could also talk to Clark College in Vancouver, I'm pretty sure that they would have no issue with is so long as it's on saturday which is our normal anime night anyways.

That would be great.  We've had an even up there once before, was kind of a staff thing.  But, if we got similar space there again, we could do alot.

So I went and talked to PCC Sylvania Campus... it is $30 per room and per hour and more on Sunday.... I have a sheet with me right now that is for Event Request that needs to be filled out before they can tell as the location.... Also they think Rock Creek would work better but I am not very familiar with RC.... Another concern they have is classes go though the whole weekend... if you do not want to worry about the classes it would have to be the after December 9...

Rathany, I do not know what you want to do about it... i can go and talk to RC or Cascade and I see what they say.... But you might want to see the form first...

At PSU it's possible to get free space if we are going in in cooperation with a club.  A club can get free space for a festival.  We just sort of take advantage of that and bring shiny toys :)  Any chance of PCC Sylvania clubs working with us on this?

I think it should be in/close to Portland, because a lot of people would have trouble getting to it if it was farther away.

I don't have a Chrysler that seats about 20, but I'll gladly accept your jukebox money!

It's not a van, its a DODGE WAGON, and it seats 13 passengers. So, maybe as big as smaller whales.
I'll go check the beluga on wikipedia...

Edit: Yeah, it's as big as a beluga. If I get a big enough piece of Pocky it could be a beluga!  ;D

How do 13 people fit into a car (comfortably)?  I don't see any cars that are that big that are not yellow and carrying school children or have blue stripes and carry poor people.

There are 15 seater vans. I usually see them whte. But its the 2 front seats a 3 person bench and then 2 more benches. Its fairly wide.

When I rode in one we had the back bench taken out for the band equipment(drums, keyboard, guitar/bass, mics, amps) and then had 13 people in it still....But we also had people sitting on the floor >.>

Okay guys, this thread has gotten a little off topic.

The point of this thread is for people who can offer a space for K-Lite to happen: members of school clubs that can get room space, someone who has or knows some business that can offer space, etc...

its actually not that out of the way, as a good majority of the people on this forum are in beaverton/aloha.

not to mention the fact that rock creek is really spacious and nice for an event like this, with great spots for photoshoots like a big fountain, and some nice grassy areas.

Kumoricon has worked with PSU before and has many different ways to get there via public transportation.

Kumoricon has never held an event at Rock Creek, there are only two buses out there (last I checked).

As much as I like the location and it does have room for us, I do not think that it would work out well.

I think that wherever the next event is we should try and get an actual theater room with a stage.

It looks like any PCC will charge us.  Unless I have missed something, we have yet to hear from PSU-ites, Clarkies or OSUians about how we can host this at their school.  Unless a venue is found, this is not happening.  Using school space has to be through a club, so, this is legwork we CAN'T do ourselves.

If we can't get free space at a school ... I don't know what will happened with this event this year.

i think we need to talk to the guy who did the costume ball at PSU.

he would probably be able to figure something out.

by the way, im all for doing it at PSU, because i realized how hard it would be to do at PCC..

I USED to go to MHCC and apart from it being way the pasta out in timbucktoo,
It's a good campus. I have connections there in some instances, though I
don't recall there really being an "ANIME" club on campus, which would suck for
us. But they do have a good Japanese language program we might be able to
bunker off of (however, that may have changed, the students signing up for the
class was dwindling as I left the school for personal reasons).

Your only issue here is the one that was addressed at Elections Meeting for 2010; Where will we stay???

The Only hotel nearby is about 8 blocks (maybe more?) Down the road on 242nd/Hogan Dr there is like 1 holiday inn or something. They said (the people offering it as an option at the Dawn Meeting) it has about 180 rooms.

BUT unless you want to take the 4 the 8+ blocks to MHCC or walk the (I believe I remember it was about 20 - 30 minutes in good walking time) distance, in the cold cold cold of Gresham (remember it's closer to the gorge than portlanders are) You might be better off on the west side.

Plus, if you thought security was bad in D-Town P-town... you might just never want to get out of your car in Gresham. Bad times my friends.... bad times.

Like I said, I can try and get ahold of someone down there who might know... but... it doesn't seem very feasible...

On the other hand, my brother goes to Ai, should I see if he knows if they have an Anime Club we could bounce off of? Does Ai have any conference rooms that would be beneficial to us?

Hey guys, now we know who would be planning this event.
Well, sure we don't have a facilities liaison yet but Jaki is again the official Prog director.

I think we can start really pressing for info at the next meeting (November).

woot for that! Though... we will prolly need a Fac Liason before this can really get full swing...

Aren't you just so excited that things are off and running for this years full force fun events!?

I know I am!

Also... another thing about MHCC;

Uhh... it's way da effs out there.... like, as in, you take da max AND THEN you take
da bus... or you just take da bus... either way not all the busses there run very late at
night... the last one to the max station is like... 11pm... so you better be planning that
all the events for the night end before then.... just fyi...

If you need space I know of quite a few places through out the portland area that have large spaces for rent ($300 and less).
Here are a few locations i can list by memory

6700 sw oak in Tigard
10101 se clackamas rd in clackamas (currently under construction)
10000 ne 33rd drive (west end of pdx runway)
6535  ne cornfoot rd (south side of pdx airport)
2800 ne cornell rd (across from hillsboro airport)
814 south shore blvd in Lake Oswego

All locations have ample parking and can hold anywhere from 300-1000 people max.
All locations have a full (industrial size) kitchen if you want to sell food items (usually included in rent).

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

For K-Lite to be a free event, we need to partner with a school club or business - they provide the space, we provide the content.  We are not currently planning to rent a space and charge admission for this.

So, if you really want to see this happen... talk to school clubs, see if they are willing to work with us to bring it to their school.  Otherwise, K-Lite won't happen this year.
