Late Night @Kumoricon Scary Movie Watch Anyone?

Ok, I had this idea.
I love watching scary movies, but I need someone's lap to cuddle in. My friends aren't very cuddly, and you guys are. So I thought, maybe, friday night, we could watch a scary movie.

When?
Friday night. At 9:00 pm we will start Prom Night, and after that we'll watch Silent Hill. If you know how long each of these movies last, or if you own them, please PM or just post here. Sound good? Good.
We'll meet in the lobby around 8:45, look for Botan. I'm pretty obvious!

Lmao. Can't hook up DVD players to flat screens.. that's like saying anime isn't a cartoon.. it does not compute. (Biggest joke I've heard in a long time, being that I used to work at an electronics retailer, and there's literally 3-4 different ways to plug a DVD player into any LCD or plasma TV)

But chances are if they say no, then there's no way to hook one up. There's a pretty good chance their stuff is hard-mounted and would be impossible to move to get to the back to plug in your own devices.

At this point, there's about a 50/50 chance. If I, or any other tech savvy person, could look at the TV in one the hilton rooms, we'd know if we could hook up a DVD player within a minute or two.

It's just not possible to be sure without checking out how they've got their TVs set up in their rooms.


Edit: If only it were easier to get my 42" LCD TV there, it wouldn't be an issue. XD

If that's possible, then a DVD player would be an easier solution to the same problem. We just don't know if it'll be possible to hook up anything to the TV.


Edit: But it's very possible with an S-video cable; though you'll also need a 3.5mm male to male headphone jack if we want audio on the TV too. Sadly, S-video only does video, so if we dont have the audio cable, it'd be picture on the TV, sound from the laptop.

I have a PS2, my friend Erin has a PS2, you can hook it up to friggen anything with the litttle red, yellow and white things.
My Dad owns an car audio store, and he has speakers by the thousands. If all else fails, and we do end up hooking a laptop up to the tv, we have speakers that could make it loud enough.

I've called 2 of my room mates, and they thought it was a great idea. One is just asking that there be someone who is just as scared as she is, AKA about to cry the entire movie (I'm sorry, I'm not giving her much credit right now, but scary movies are her weak point).

The other 2 are constantly online, so I'll email them.

If we planned on this, I could bring my computer speakers.. two small speakers attached to a subwoofer 2/3 the side of my desktop. If I can fit it in my backpack.. lol

And I can watch any scary movie I want. Don't cha worry about that Nikki. If it becomes too scarring, I can always burrow in Rachel's lap. (Yes, Rachel, you are the chosen one). Then there are other peoples that might want to watch a less scary movie. I personally don't care, and will most likely be poking fun at it, but there are people that might not want to watch movies that are way too scary. Maybe we could watch a less scary movie, and then watch a scarier one later.

Not really an issue.. these speakers can get LOUD. On the little on/off/volume knob, there are 6 little notches around it.. when it's off, it's on one notch, when I turn it on, normally I listen to it at the 1st notch it hits when turned on.. if I want really loud music, I hit the 2nd notch. There's 2 and a half more notches after that.. if we had it up all the way, we'd probably get complaints from nearby rooms.

Also, subwoofer with adjustable treble and bass. If we do use a laptop and my speakers, I can guarantee volume wont be an issue.

Possibly.. but I'd also take into consideration the rooms above and below as well. Although, hotels are built pretty well, so noise for the people up/down one floor shouldn't be too much of an issue if the bass isnt all the way up.

There's most likely not.. not very many LCD/Plasma TVs have front plug-ins these days, if any at all, and definitely not the bigger ones. Typically they do have plug-ins on the side, but we still don't know if we'll have access to the sides or back.

Maybe we could watch something with a bit of humor to it like Feast (I can list a lot more if people would like). That way people who don't like movies to be too scary can focus on the humor instead.

It's what I do too.. I worked electronic retail for almost 2 years. And we've already been over this.. we don't know if we'll have access to the back of the TV, and if so, we can just use a DVD player with composite or component cables, or a PS2 for that matter.. plus there's the fact that with S-video, it doesn't output sound to the TV unless you have another 3.5mm audio cable.

They both are inexpensive...and as i recall the tv's arent mounted on the walls so the backs of the tvs are im sure accessible. But up to you guys its your thing I probably cant come since ill be busy with staff stuff till only the lord knows when

They may not be wall mounted, but if the pedestal is hard-mounted to some furniture, which is very possible, it may hinder any ability to get or see behind it.. even more so if it's a model that doesn't have a rotating pedestal.

But by all means, I hope it is accessible.. I have no desire to lug around a 5-10lb subwoofer half the size of my desktop. XD

Oh, it is. Especially because it's a realistic scary. E.I. not all of thse unreal special American effects. xD It's scary as hell; another reason being they don't really explained what the hell happened and leave your mind to wander and wonder. *has seen JU-ON 1 & 2*

I know the hollywood video I pass on the way to con by bus has the first two on DVD, so I can get them probably. A little bit of reimburment might help once I get there though~ It's about 6 or 7 bucks a rental.

Other movies that might be good are Feast rated R (a fun horror comedy), Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon rated R (another horror comedy), and Dark Water (the japanese one) rated pg-13 (not a lot of gore but still creepy).

If all goes well and on time, Friday night, there will be a screening at the con hotel for folks who are there early, of a scary film. It's called "Pickman's Muse," and it's a (loose) adaptation of "Haunter of the Dark," by H. P. Lovecraft. If you can make it to the screening, don't miss it. I watched it (my aunt has the lead female role), and it's been several days, and I'm still revisiting images from it and pondering its philosophy! Which means it's good! It's a fan homage, and it hasn't even been publicly released yet! (I'm friends w/the director.) So catch it while you can!

Yes, they did, actually. My friends hooked up a PS2 to the TV and it went smoothly, for like five seconds, before the screen went completely black.
The TV and PS2 were fine though, after it had happened.

Well if they went to the trouble of putting a program like that in the tv, which I'm not totally convinced of with what info I've heard, they could easily have cameras in them too watching everyone.  Just a little paranoid info to help you not sleep tonight! except it's already 12am and your all in bed, well most of you :/  I doubt they do but you can never be too careful!! If you go to some of the gadget conventions around you will see a lot of things that are just slightly less technologically advanced from the props in trek or the other sci-fi shows.  Those shows are where lots of people get ideas in the first place so it's no wonder stuff get made that can do some amazing stuff.  Still waiting on the kind of tech a medical tricorder has(CAT MRI scans and more).  We don't have too many scanning devices that are small enough yet.
