So true!  They need to stop showing anime on TV and just do the DVD thing.  Even the late night stuff is cut to crap.

I will kill everyone at Cartoon Network, when Naruto comes to Toonami.
;---; I'm gonna have to buy the box set, beacuse I will sure as hell not  watch it on Toonami.
And if they cut out the Opening and Closing stuff. Ohmygosh.

;--; But I'm happy that One Peice is comming to Toonami. No matter how bad that dub is, I love it. ;--; -has gone insane-

while censorship certainly go overly far.  I thinks its partly because mainstream still thinks cartoons are for kids...even though you have AMERCIAN cartoons that contradict that.  examples would be sealab, simpsons, or futurama.  But naruto/one piece going on toonami does have upsides as it will get much more exposure to mainstream.

yes i agree, anime definatly needs more exposure to the mainstream, but it is sad that there are so many casualties......if only all anime could be dubbed by synch point or adv........flcls dub was very true to the original

I'm not sure if it getting more mainstream will change it.  newcomers will see dubbed and make their opinions based on that.  Now I doubt that any changes will scare off the newcomers as it would with many anime fans.  Thing is, they will likely think its good as it is and keep watching.  And since they're watching companies dun quite have as much incenive to make a better translation(sure some anime fans will complain, but I think thats far smaller compared to casual fans).

synch point?  when it came to anime, I felt adv and pioneer/genoen(whatever their new name is) had some good translations.  funimation did a good job with fruits baskets as far as I can tell.

manga wise however, del ray seems best(they have cultural/translation notes that are pretty nice imo), dunno about tokyo pop(haven't heard anything), and viz is somewhat bad, at least with naruto manga(they aren't consisent.  censor something then dun censor it.  and can't make up minds on their jutsu translations)

viz changed sasukes last name twice first uchiwa and then uchiha, lol
tokyopop is ok, they are kinda hit or miss sometimes.
but ya you do have some good points, although there are getting to be more companies that want to stick to the original japanese translation, which is a good thing.

*Note: none of these are spoilers, so don't worry.  Also, please excuse the semi-rant*
They called Negima's dad "The Southern Master" when it's suppose to be "The Thousand Master."  I'm not a professional translator and I could figure out it was 1000.  For starters, in the Japanese books, it ends in ド .  "Southern" does not end in a "D" or with a "D" sound so I have no idea how Del Ray could have come to that conclusion.  Also, at one point in the story, Negima is next to a picture of his dad and written on are the exact words "1000 Master."
Then there's the usual side comments that don't effect the story such as Negima once mentioned jokingly about Qudditch.  Japanese version; not there.  I just think they could have done a lot better on the translation.

*sigh* Okay, I'm done now.

well I dunno about the thousand/southern master part.  there may be some reason where they couldn't do a literal translation.  and joking about Qudditch?  I dun remember that happening.  if they do add minor side comments that dun affect story, then I dun see much of a problem with it.

I'm not angry in the "Death to Del Ray!" sense.  It's more of a "rubs me the wrong way" sense that they messed up an important translation.  I just can't see how they could get "The Southern Master" for their translation.
Plus, which makes more sense: "The Thousand Master: Master of a Thousand Spells" or "The Southern Master: Master of a Thousand Spells"?

southern master made sense to me and I didn't think anything was wrong with it.  imo, thousand master sounds kinda odd.  you dun often hear of masters with a number for a prefix(usually a suffix, like "of nth item").

but then I did wonder where the southern came from....I just thought it would be explained in the future.  but with the japanese version being like that, I dunno.

overall though, it doesn't bother me very much as I"m much more tortlant of translations and small changes.(sometimes I feel like I'm surround by hardcore people....but then again...I am speaking on anime con forum, but offline still....)

oh btw, something I remember with fansubs, remember they aren't always perfect.  of course, this will depend on what quaility you get though.  I dunno about anime, but on naruto fansubs, there was some major mix ups with rasengan supposely having 8 lvls(its just the 3 that we see) and akatsuki's suppose husband(just a partner) more recently.

After living in Japan and working for the Japanese media for as long as I have I can safely tell you that all anime is for children.  The difference is that Japan is a lot more open about sexuality.  They have no problem with children watching things that people in America would not only classify as porn but condemn for fowl content.  There are some adults that like anime and watch it regularly but there is no anime that is geared towards adults.  Don’t get me wrong there are shows that the entire family can enjoy, for example Crayon Shinchan and Detective Conan, but all in all you will not find too many adults that would ever admit to watching anything else.  Usually if adults do admit such interests they are heavily chastised in society.  Manga, however, seems to be a little more widely enjoyed age group wise.  Adults have things like business jump and what not that they can relate with more where kids have things like Jump, Flower, and Nakayoshi.  There are a lot of variety shows that rule Japan’s television networks and that is what you hear most people talking about and referring to as their main source of entertainment.  I have to admit that I love most of the variety shows especially Kokoriko Miracle type!  Everyone should try to see let’s speak J-pop English too!  That show kicks a lot of anus for a lot of reasons!

o-o; That bugs me a little bit... but I'll still watch it on Toonami. But Naruto... Not so much. I'm probably going to buy a big ol' Naruto boxed set (of the anime)... Hopefully it'll be an OK sub for the people who aren't prepared to spend 50 bucks to get the intire series on DVD.

Hey Joe, do you know of that one show(I dun know its name) that has an american going around asking JP people to speak english phrases?  I remember seeing a JP girl saying "I am ice creamer" quite clearly when I saw show(I forget where) about it.

Also, is anime aimed purely at the 7-12 kids or is there any teenage shows?

imo, when anime put on adult swim, you think they censored it enough to put it on toonami instead(I believe this was the case with canidate for goddess).  more so when you compared it to the american cartoons that are also shown.  although, super milk chan seems to be the exception with how vulgar it is.

I do know the show that you are talking about!  It’s called World's Funniest English and used to star a guy named Thane Camus.  The show was canceled due to Mr. Camus opening an English school and acting more so in dramas, namely Sakura that ran on NHK, as apposed to variety shows.  World's Funniest English is getting a second life now on TV Tokyo with a new host.  You have to see it!  The new guy is the best host ever on anything!  Well, I could be a little bias on that one.  Hehe.  This time the show is being broadcast from Ikebukuro and has a larger time slot.  SEE THAT SHOW!
As for anime, it is really all for children.  There is nothing that is aimed at anyone over the age of thirteen.  Not even hentai anime.  To tell the truth hentai anime is porn for children.  On a side note just to let everyone know, yaoi is not a word in Japanese.  They use a different word that literally translated means hells porn.  It’s a very bad thing in Japan.  The fans of what we call yaoi are shunned by all other fans and people in general.
Toonami and Adult Swim have very different rules that they have to live by.  I know that anytime before 11:00PM they cannot show blood, vulgar language, or vulgar imagery.  At no time can they show a person portrayed as under the age of 18 being beaten.  America says it contributes to child abuse.  We call all thank Joe Lieberman for that one.  All in all things that are action related with young characters are going to be heavily edited no matter what.  I think that Adult Swim somehow is getting around the language censorship laws.  Things like Super Milk Chan, Sea Lab 2021, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force are flat out dirty.  I have no idea how they are doing it but I have to admit that I like some of their shows.
What is your favorite?

sounds cool on that show.  I dunno how I could see it as I recall, most of the JP shows I have seen are videos from my Japanese teachers.

even hentai anime?  shocking! O_o

yaoi fans are shunned in japan?  whats the reason for that?  although...using a word that means literally "Hell's porn".....just wrong....o_o...must have something to do why they're shunned

as for those dirty shows on adult swim, I guess its simply cause they're all in the "adult" hour time slot.  not that it really stops some kids from watching it though.  However....didn't simpsons have some violence done to bart/lisa?  and in hours before 11 pm.  I believe the halloween had one episode with it.

sounds cool on that show.  I dunno how I could see it as I recall, most of the JP shows I have seen are videos from my Japanese teachers.

Japan, as a society, is incredibly conservative.
As for the Simpson thing, they do it the way Dragon Ball Z did and show them falling but not being hit.

I take it the show is still on NHK.  What time and day?

And I just noticed your location on your profile.  Are you really in Japan right now too?

Actually the show is now on TV Tokyo.  I will get the day and time and post it!
I will be returning to Ikebukuro on the 15th of June.  We should hang out!  Where are you located?

Toonami and Adult Swim have very different rules that they have to live by.  I know that anytime before 11:00PM they cannot show blood, vulgar language, or vulgar imagery.

Joe,

Don't forget to keep in mind the difference between broadcast and cable.  The logic of that is that broadcast signals can come into your house whether you like it or not, but cable is something one has to request and pay for.  Kind of like Howard Stern moving from broadcast to Satellite.

Channels like HBO (even though it is a pay channel so even another level of paying for it goes on), choose to not show R rated movies during the day (not including some of the additional HBOs that are on digital cable), but that is the channel's decision.

There is talk about the FCC trying to gain control of cable.  Cross your fingers it doesn't happen.

Where I live is kinda way out there from the main part of Tokyo.  I ride the Seibu-Shinjuku line to come in to Takadanobaba station and go to Waseda daigaku.

Just as a side note, I'll be leaving for home on June 30th (the last day of the program).
