My surname came from the French "Michael" (pronounced /mi shael/, which sounds similar to /mi shel/ to the untrained ear) and was converted to the Irish "Mitchell" when my ancestors moved to the US during the 1800's. I'm not certain, but I believe they actually had lived in French Canada for a few generations prior. Most likely the name change was due to the poor view Americans had of the French after the war of 1812. Haven't done enough research to be certain about this though.

My last name came from the whole Scandanavian thing where peeps were all 'Hey, you're the son of shiz, you're Shizson' which turned into the son of Olaf, Olson, then when they moved over some changed it to Olsen and the like.

So, like, I'm the son of the bad guy in A Series of Unfortunate Events.

IMO the methodology by which many modern surnames were generated was pretty silly.

Half the population was named Miller or Smith.

Gaelic clans had a good system going on though. If I had taken my mother's mother's mother's name (for some reason) I would be Charlie McClure (of the clan McLeod)

For odd reasons, my last name changed from Bisping (German/French) to Fletcher (English for "maker of Arab") then to Toland (shortened Irish name).
