About me...
I have been a fan of Ms. Takahashi's works since 2001, when I was first introduced to Ranma through my high school anime club. Most of my cosplays are from her series, and I particularly enjoy styling wigs for her characters. My costumes include Lum, Ranma Saotome (boy and girl types), Akane Tendo, Shampoo, Kagome Higurashi, and Sango.

For the last two years I have lead the Ranma 1/2 photoshoot at Anime Evolution, and I plan on taking the tradition to Sakura Con and Kumori Con '08 as well, and expanding it to a general Takahashi gathering. My favorite series is Mermaid Forest/Saga, followed by Maison Ikkoku and Ranma 1/2.

OMG a giant Takashashi group photoshoot would be AWESOME.
I LOVE Maison Ikkoku especially, it's my favorite manga of all-time.
I think it would be great to do a tribute to my favorite series by going as Kyoko!

You can call me one of "Kumi-Chan's Stormtroopers." LOL
I was Ranma this year at KC on Sunday.
But I'm all for any Rumiko Takahashi costumes too, and I'll walk in Kumi-Chan's shadow for her gathering(s).  I like Ranma 1/2 very much and think Urusei Yatsura is hillarious.  Those two series I've been watching since 2000-2001.  I thought it was cool they showed Inu-Yasha on TV.  Currently I'm enjoying Maison Ikkoku plus some of Takahashi's more obscure works (Rumic World).

"Rumic World" could refer to these 1-shot anime series or manga:

Laughing Target
Maris the Chojo
Fire Tripper

There's also the Rumic Anthology.  Is this correct, Kumi-Chan?
Let's have a big group next year!

Yes, to me my minions! ^^

Glad to see response on this already. Makes me happy.
By "Rumic World", I'm refering to any and all of her one-shots, released in manga form in the US as "Rumic Trilogy"* and "Rumic Theater". In anime form several of the titles cpardo mentioned were released under their individual names in the mid-90s. I believe this includes the original OVAs of the Mermaid Saga as well (I have Mermaid Scar on VHS). Recently they released "Rumic Anthology" (believe that's the title), a collection of her more domestically-themed stories. The new "Mermaid Forest" anime, which bears a resemblence to the animation from the Inuyasha films, has Anthology as part of the credits, so there's probably a connection there. I haven't seen the Anthology myself yet to compare.

*EDIT: I feel a little silly. I knew it'd been too long since I've read it. According to an online source, it's "Rumic World Trilogy". Okay. I think I do remember that. But it's been so long...I haven't checked manga out from the library for ages, not since I started buying it every other week (right now, working on collecting the earlier volumes of Ranma, since I only have 1, 14 and then 23-36; I love the post-anime stories, Akari's got to be one of my favorite minor-ish characters).

My trouble is picking which character(s) I'll do for the gathering. A Ranma 1/2 character is pretty much a given. But which one? By next fall I'll probably have costumes for most of the major female and some of the male cast (I keep hunting around for a sweater to use for Akari). I suck at decisions. I'll probably wait to see who else is coming.
I feel I probably have a responsibility to come as Lum. In school uniform, regular version's for summer cons only. If only we had a Mendou. I know someone who'll be Ataru, don't I cpardo?  ;)

And then there's the other ones. Rin from Mermaid Forest is my big project for 2008. I love my Kagome cosplay (more accurately, I love the props that go with my Kagome cosplay). I'm supposed to be finishing Sango's demon-slayer outfit for Sakura Con. And I've been telling myself I'll do Kyoko for ages.
I'm such a dork.

I've been seriously considering doing Akane for some time now, since I'm pretty sure her school uniform is within my skill level, and the wig isn't that difficult.
That sounds like fun, though!

I'm going as Sango in her traveling outfit. All I need is the white hair tie, the bandana thing that goes around her neck, a hiraikotsu, and her armwarmers! Eh....Thank eBay. I got the jist of the costume there...

Oh, goodness, please do! If someone else came as a Mermaid Forest character, I'd definitely do Rin. I'm looking for a Yuta, actually, though I'm thinking more for Sakura Con...that's the con I want to have Rin finished for. I was considering Mana in one of her modern outfits, but that's a little too "normal" for con wear for me.

'Course, Rin's kimono is really short. But that's what cheer shorts are for. My Kagome skirt's none too long either. The main thing is, she's got really sweet armor. I've been wanting to try my hand at fashioning that traditional Japanese breastplate.

Which character does your hair work for? Which story arc?

If you need help, yukata!Sango was the first anime cosplay I ever did. I've improved greatly since then, but it wasn't a bad costume. If you need any help (particularly on wig-styling...I have a lovely Sango wig now), please feel free to ask.

Actually, this applies to anyone. If you need any advice on costume construction, I'd be glad to help. I've dabbled fairly successfully in most areas of costume design and assembly, save large props and weapons. Wigs is special love, and Takahashi bangs is my special thing.  ;D (checkies! http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=1097102 <--favorite photo of that costume)

I think I'll start listing people's characters in the first post. If you change your mind or decide you need to drop out, I'll change it. But it'll be cool to see how many people are interested and what kind of variety we've got.

If you mean me Kakashi, thanx!  I've been cosplaying Ranma for years.  I'm looking to find or make a different top, either a different color or short sleeve one, plus a new wig.  Me and Kumi-Chan are going to do a Ranma related thing for Sakura Con, and maybe Maison Ikkoku and of course Urusei Yatsura.  Yes, I'll be Ataru Moroboshi!

I don't have any Inu-Yasha costumes (sniff!).  I was Koga once, but I borrowed that costume--it was fun, though!  I'm not sure what character I could be or who I want to be.  Maybe Kagome's school male friend who covers for her absences--what's his name?

I'm going to watch the Rumic trilogy and Mermaid Forest, to see if there are any other possibilities.

HOJO-KUN?! Oh, freaking sweet, do it!

Technically, he doesn't cover for her, her grandpa does. Hojo just brings her all the weird crap from his family's health store (or something to that effect) to assist with her various "illnesses". He's not exactly wise to her extracurricular hobbies; none of her other friends are either, but at least they have some semblance of awareness of what's going on with her romantically (ie, are aware of Inuyasha's existance). I love Hojo. He's one of the thickest guys in the Takahashi-verse, but he's so cute. Actually, the gullibility factor kind of adds to his cuteness. And he is the sweetest guy...

I think I'm showing my colors a little.

You might look good in the blue outfit from the OVAs. I'm leaning towards it for when I make an outfit from scratch finally, though short or long-sleeved I don't know. Or I may flip through my manga and see if I like one of the outfits on the covers. There's one from near the end of the series...the volume when his mom finally finds out what's what with Ranko...that has a really neat top.
Akane's Chinese outfit from the Saffron arc is also really cool, the loose long tunic with leggings. I have a dress in a similar style, but mine's bright red and embroidered. I think it's a bridal robe or something, at least the lady at the store said it could be worn as such (certainly wasn't cheap, but it's really pretty).

Black.

Ah, yes, but hanyou are prettier! At least one in particular. And demons in general seem to have cuter ears. Personally, though, I've got a huge thing for the dorky ones. That's one of the major reasons I love Ryoga, he can be such a dork.

See, this kind of face doesn't really say too much about your intelligence, even if it is freaking adorable.

BTW, love the avatar. That's one of my favorite covers. (I bet you know where I got the idea for a couple of our photoshoot shots now, don't you?)

Hmm, well my hair is pretty much the perfect poofy bangs, long and straight (it goes down to my hips right now). I like Mana, but like you said, I wouldn't do ANY of her normal outfits because..well...they're normal. And also they seem to be more cold weather outfits and I get hot way too easily! Any suggestions on what I could do?

Well, there's Mana's outfit from the beginning of the series, her kimono. I've thought about doing the fugitive version of it, with the torn hem. She gets done up in kimono a couple times throughout the series. Natsume, from the Bone Princess arc, is another idea. Her hairstyle is really cute.

If you didn't mind playing a antagonist, Isago from the "Village of the Fighting Fish" story has some really beautiful kimono. Her purple one is gorgeous. Rin, my character, is from the same story. I'm hoping I can convince someone to do that version of Yuta.

The problem with Mermaid Saga is the clothing in it really does look like regular clothing. The kimono are pretty but in most cases not distinctive enough to link to any particular character. That's one of the major reasons I want to do Rin: I really love the character, and her story, but her regular outfit is also unusual enough that it looks like a costume. Maybe most people won't know who I am, but at least they'll know I'm supposed to be somebody.

If you get hot easily, though, most of the kimono may be too much for you. I'd recommend Natsume out of all of them; since she's still a young girl (or looks like one), her outfit would look appropriate done in summer-weight cotton. The colors are really nice, too, bright and cheerful. I'm looking at the cover of volume 3 as I type: crimson background, large jade green circle pattern, golden yellow obi, and periwinkle second kimono (could be done as a false collar if you only wanted to wear one layer). She makes me think of a cross between Rin and Kagura from Inuyasha.

yeah, breifly looking through some clips I thought about Mana's torn up kimono. I think that is the most likely candidate for me as far as Mermaid Forest goes.

of course there ARE other things I could do stuff from....any suggestions there too? haha

Oh, you really don't wanna get me started...I'm the chick who's determined to cosplay the entire main female cast (and probably three-quarters of the main male cast) of Ranma 1/2, as well as a couple of characters from each of Takahashi-sensei's other series.

Maybe I won't be so bad when thinking about other people. Well, for Ranma, I'd suggest Ukyo, Kodachi, or Kasumi since you have long hair, or if you're really ambitious, Rouge, young Cologne, Ninomiya-sensei or even Saotome Nodoka (I'm sure our Genma would be thrilled if you did her ^_~). If you don't mind sort-of crossplay, try Tsubasa or Konatsu...especially Konatsu. If you like Urusei Yatsura, Sakura would be awesome (I'd suggest school-nurse version, for easy cosplay), or Ran if you were willing to curl your hair. For Inuyasha, how about young Tsubaki? She has a really pretty outfit, and she's rarely cosplayed. Or you could dig into the one-shot stories. The female agent in "Wasted Minds" has really long hair. Hers is closer to knee-length if I remember correctly. But any of those characters would be pretty much unrecognizable. Sister Angela from One Pound Gospel has short hair, but as she's in habit most of the time you could easily hide yours.

These are all if you're limiting yourself to cosplay with your natural hair. If you're open to the idea of a wig...all I can say is I'd really like to see more of any Urusei Yatsura characters (I know we're looking for a Shinobu, and I'd love to see Kurama or Benten). And any secondary Ranma characters.

I think I might be working on a new version of Kagome for a photoshoot in November...the outfit with the green cardigan she wears in the Yura story arc (beginning of the series). Just recently finished my Lum school uniform, new pants for the red Ranma outfit, and purchased fabric for Ryoga's outfit (which I'll also be making for the shoot next month). Got some nice linen fabric for Rin's kimono as well. And I think I've made up my mind to do Miroku instead of Sango for Sakura Con '08, which means I may have him for Kumori Con. I've had the fabric for a long time and I made the rosary about three years ago. Kimono are much easier to make than fitted garments. And Miroku's staff is so much easier to carry to cons than the boomerang.

cpardo and I (and a bunch of other people) have started doing monthly photoshoots. The last one, on October 14th, was at Gasworks Park in Seattle. The next one, on November 18th, is being held in Tacoma. We're just trying to give ourselves more opportunities to cosplay and get good shots of our costumes outside conventions.

And since I found a light green cardigan for $2.50 at Goodwill, I'm definitely making Kagome's Yura-arc outfit. As long as I finish Ryoga first.

Oh, yeah...I agree with the staff & Hiraikotsu thing....I rigid-wrapped mine because this is my first prop ever, and I wanted it to last for a while...I spent, like $15 on Rigid wrap...I'm afraid it weighs, like 7 pounds now.....I haven't sanded it, and then I want to cover it in that paper tape and then spray paint and accessorize....Anyone know what I could do for the accesories....It looks like for the brown straps I'll have to use tape and then spray paint unless anyone has any ideas.....

And I'll need a strap...any ideas...

I also need to add velcro to my kimono because it keep coming open...

for the straps, I'd recommend finding some leather. your general leather working store should have the stuff needed at a reasonable price.

Hey, didn't feel like starting a new topic when we've already got a perfectly good one here. How's it going, everyone? Anyone made anything new lately, or working on anything? Just finished the dress for Juliet-as-Akane for Sakura Con, so I will probably be wearing that to any dances at Kumori Con. Rin's also getting back on track. I'm starting to look at materials for the spear. Still need to figure out the breastplate.

I'll also be working on several Ranma 1/2 cosplays this summer: one new Akane (Doll Inn yukata), Hawaiian!Ranma, Ryoga, and Nabiki. I'd like to redo my Lum costume. And I think I'm going to try to get both versions of Sango finished by the time fall comes around. This is all stuff I've got fabric, wigs, and patterns for, so it's just a matter of getting started. In the case of Nabiki, just cutting the wig and possibly making the summer version of the school blouse.

How's the progress on your stuff going?

Are you shopping online or at store locations? I ordered a couple wigs from Cosworx recently and I'm feelin' the love for them...got them within two or three days of placing the order. Definitely going back when I order a new wig for Akane. I just wish they sold loose fiber too.

Just make sure there's a way that people can know about it before hand, okay?  Nearly every con that I've gone to, there's been one, but I wouldn't hear about it happening until it was already over.

Yeah I'll be there at Kumori Con.  I think I have plenty to wear Rumiko Takahashi-wise: the best of which is Ranma as Romeo costume that Kumi-chan made, and I believe she's making Mermaid Forest costumes for us too (Yuta for me to go with Rin).  Kind of tired of my old red Ranma tunic though.  I have a quick Godai costume but won't it be too hot to wear the yellow sweater?! Maybe.  I did a Kuno school uniform quickly and maybe plan on Ranma beach wear to put together.  What else oh Hojo maybe...

Definitely will have something!

Okay, not 100% sure I can go anymore. I'm looking for a new job right now, so whether I can get the time off...It may just be easier to tell them I'm out of town from August 21 through September 1, rather than try to request two weekends in a row off. Let whoever I work for know about it off the bat.

I think I'm sticking to what would be comfortable for summer. So...

Rin - Short, sleeveless kimono. w/armor if that gets done.
Doll-Inn!Akane - Yukata. Might do this instead of Juliet for a formal costume if it looks like it's gonna be warm. (Which means I need to see about something to match for Ranma.)
Hawaiian!Ranma - Pretty much just a Hawaiian-print sarong with some island-girl accessories (hibiscus hairclip, conch shell drinking gourd, knife; from the artbook). I might do this if I can get a new wig for Girl-type.
Lum - Bikini. If I can get the upgraded version done in time.

Probably won't do Kagome, since I'm participating in a big group at AE. That and I'd rather not haul the bike to two consecutive cons, and I dunno, I think the bike's what makes the cosplay.

If you did Isago, you'd have a "Village of the Fighting Fish" Yuta and Rin to pose with. *wiggles eyebrows* She's got very pretty kimono...I'd suggest the purple one from the end of the third episode.

I'd be thrilled to see other Mermaid cosplay, period. I'll probably have to organize an actual group one of these times, with a private photoshoot separate from the con. Go to an empty beach location and take some real photos. Maybe later this fall, or next spring, really plan ahead.

Hey, when would you guys be interested in doing the photoshoot?

Oh, and I'm also trying to talk someone into wearing my sisters old P-chan cosplay from Kumoricon 2004. She said she would but she's working on going as someone else, so I got to talk one of my friends into going in it! I think it would be awesome to bring it out of retirement, especially since I'm going as female Ranma. If I can get someone to go as them, I'll drag them along to the shoot.

First day sounds good. What time?

Here's the other photoshoots that have definite times for Saturday:
World of Warcraft - 1:00
Kingdom Hearts - 3:00
Trinity Blood - 4:00
Phoenix Wright/Apollo Justice - 4:00

Ones without definite times: .hack//SIGN, Gurren Lagann

I think 2:00 would work. Gives people time to have lunch, and it's not conflicting with any of the other shoots thus far. And I don't think it's interfering with any major events. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) Also, since I've never been to Kumori Con, I have no idea about what would make a good photoshoot location. Suggestions?

Okay! I need some quick help!

I would reallllly love to do a cosplay for this, but then I bleached the crap out of my hair so now I'm blonde and costume choices have severely gone down the toilet! Is there anyone from ANYTHING (I've seen pretty much all of her work) who has long blonde hair??

Wanna borrow a wig? I've got a lot of choices... ^^

Hmm...Picolet (the French guy from Ranma) is about the only one I can think of off the top of my head who's actually blonde. She generally sticks to Japanese characters, most of whom have their natural coloring, and most of the aliens/demons in her works have unnatural hair colors. Can't think of any who tend towards yellowish though.

I think a couple of the earlier color illustrations of Girl-type Ranma have her with blonde hair. You could always claim it's a manga-only version.

Kumi-chan, could I really borrow a wig?? Do you happen to have a short Akane wig or a Shampoo wig? I'm thinking about doing one of their outfits from Nihao My Concubine!

I'm pretty fabulous at baking (if I could bribe/thank you)~!

Well, I might be using my new Akane wig, but you'd be welcome to borrow my Shampoo wig or my older blue Akane wig. And one of the costumes if you liked (and our sizes were somewhat close). I need to sew the buns back into Shampoo; I took them out recently to thoroughly wash the wig. Keep in mind that that one is very heavy--about 15 pounds, due to the volume of extra fiber sewn in--and quite long, therefore literally a pain in the butt (or head) to wear. It's best worn just at photoshoots. Akane's easier, but the dye can sometimes stain the back inside collar of the shirt you wear with it.

Shampoo (amazon/first outfit). Garments are fairly loose, pants have an elastic waist; breastplate was made to suit.
Includes: Top, leggings, sash, brocade slippers (size 8), breastplate, wooden sword.
Shampoo (waitress - bike/delivery box not part of the set, unfortunately). Some alterations taken. Pants are more fitted, top is a little looser on me, especially through waist.
Includes: Top, pants, brocade slippers (size 8), apron, cap, ceramic bowl, chopsticks.
Akane wig (school uniform). Dress is a couple inches larger through the waist than my measurement. I wear a petticoat which pads me out a bit, but this could be discarded if a little extra space is needed.
Includes: Dress, long-sleeved blouse, petticoat-style underskirt, canvas shoes (size 8), P-chan plushie, bucket. Socks needed. Sheer nylons recommended.

Also available:
Blue qi pao, originally used for Girl-type Ranma, but could also be used for Shampoo. This one's very fitted, though. Special alterations made; the waist is really narrow.
Includes: Dress, brocade slippers (size 10). Sheer nylons definitely recommended.
Akane's outfit from "Tendo Family Christmas Scramble" OAV (toddler in photo not mine). It's a little more "size free", especially if you had a similar long-sleeved pink blouse. It's also really comfy because the dress is made out of polarfleece.
Includes: Dress, blouse, shoes (size 8-1/2), knotty scarf. Socks needed.

My sizes: That's a secret~! (Available on request ^_~)

I am very very seriously considering doing Akane's dress from Nihao My Concubine, though, so if it's not too much trouble I would love to borrow any short Akane wig you're willing to let me use!

Yeah, for the tropical "outfit", I had to compromise. Nothing I found had large enough patterns that came in colors I liked, or were accurate for either manga or anime versions. I fudged. Came out pretty cute anyway.

You know, I think I might do Delivery-Girl!Shampoo. Possibly with the bike, depends on if I actually feel up to transporting it. I've only done the outfit once. I have to talk to my Ranma though. He might be for it if I make/buy him a new summer top, since he's a little tired of his red outfit.
Maybe do Mermaid separately from the meetup. We'll see.

Oh, was Saturday good? Any suggestions on location?

I was thinking 2:00, since there's no photoshoot currently scheduled at that time. It seems like the park is where most shoots are taking place, so it's likely that's where we're going to be. Outside's always better. And since my question in the weapons/prop thread was answered: I'll be carrying (or next to someone carrying) a sign earlier in the day on Saturday with the time/location of our shoot. Most likely shaped and decorated like one of Panda!Genma's wooden signs. Something like this:

Rumiko Takahashi gathering and photoshoot!
Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, Urusei Yatsura,
Maison Ikkoku, and more!
Saturday at 2:00, in the park

I'm going to put a notice up on the photoshoot thread. And if this time doesn't work for anyone...well, I've got a ton of RT costumes. I'd be up for a second gathering for Sunday or Monday.

Maybe I can make that wooden delivery box like I've been planning. If so, I'll probably put a notice for the shoot on the back of my delivery box as well.
If I do Delivery-Girl!Shampoo, I might see about bringing instant ramen and a thermos of hot water for the group. This could be a lot of fun.

I'm rethinking the wooden delivery box. Xerox box covered in silver foamboard would be much cheaper and easier to both make and carry around. Plus I'd feel better about putting the characters for "Nekohanten" on foamboard. Much easier to fix if I make a mistake.

Gah, forgot this costume means I'll need to sew the buns back into my wig. Oh well, that's a few hours work at most.

Try and bring the hot water in whatever good sized container you may possess, I would probably avoid the mini-geyser fountains that's somewhere in the park for taking pictures, cause there's a good chance of makeup/costume getting wet.......

The thing is, I don't currently possess any container that's (a) large enough to hold the water needed for a dozen+ cups of ramen, and (b) can keep said water hot for an hour or so, since I doubt I'll be coming straight from my hotel room to the park. Whatever I use also needs to have a good seal, since I don't like the idea of spilling boiling water on myself on the walk over. Basically, I need a really big thermos. My parents have one but they're not going to let me borrow it for the weekend.

I'm not saying it's not going to happen, but at this point I'm not sure how likely it is. Generally, for Shampoo, my props consist of a ceramic bowl, a pair of chopsticks, my delivery box, and my bike. The bike may or may not come with us. The box and bowl probably will.

Okay, avoid the fountains (though for all the Ranma cosplayers, I think those will make for fantastic photos). Any suggestions as to where we should meet? Once again, I've never been there. I have no idea what's available.

Sigh.....I guess the group can just try to cosplay for "authenticity" in the food court. Mainly, cuz there's a dumpling restuarant and a Japanese place in there for lunch(if you're unable to bring the ramen). But of course, for phote taking purposes, the park is still good. (it's the place where you would get off if you were taking the MAX train.)

Hon, why's it so important that I bring food? It was an idea, one I wouldn't mind trying to pull off if I can, but it's just an idea. And I think most folks would rather have real food than instant ramen for lunch anyway. I only eat that as a snack.

mike_was_here: Always cool to see a Genma! ^^

kimiski: Sorry you can't come anymore. I hope I get to see your costume anyway.

Okay, last time I change my mind, I swear. :P I don't have the time to fix my Shampoo wig (got a new job last week, and it's killing my cosplay prep time), so I'm coming as Ryoga. Got the summer version done for AE, found I liked it quite a bit, but didn't wear it for too long, so I'll be wearing it most of the day Saturday, including for the shoot.

Honestly, at this point I don't want to bother with several hours of wig styling, or making a delivery box. And I've got other costumes to finish. Ryoga looks pretty good, though I do have to make a headband. Should be simple enough, I've got the scrap fabric and paint.

Thank you SO much though and I hope to see your ryoga~!
