i just think i want to ad to this, i think if i see another ichigo with safety orange hair i might have to kick myself in the head. no matter what color the ink in the animation is, his hear is intended to be kinda a strawberry blond kinda thing, not traffic cone orange.  and besides no one looks good in that color.

the end.
Lol'd, and QFE'd.

You eloquently voiced what I'm sure the majority of those of us who actually think about these things think. I completely agree with what you said. I enjoy making props more and more each year, so your comments about cardboard and duct tape, I'm very much in agreement with you on those. Those two materials do not make a quality product, they cannot make a quality product, not on their own anyway. I've used duct tape once, and I made darn sure that it was not noticeable or even seen, it was only for support and reinforcement. That's all it should ever be used for, not as some silver-paint substitute......ack....that's just awful, lol.

So yeah, I agree with you there.

Sorry, but I made and ENTIRE CAR out of cardboard and duct tape.

So sorry that you think you could do a better job, but I think it kicked some major butt!

I wasn't about to make it out of some ridiculously heavy or expensive material.  If you're the least bit skillful you can make duct tape and cardboard go a long way.

i have similar feelings about alot of things, anime is art, which is a representation of of reality.  not necessarily to be reproduced perfectly, because of everything from color combinations and um...gravity, or lets just say physics in general.

also in regards to the cardboard thing. i think we all have to remember this kid.  id like to see these things when they are all painted.

i wish it didn't crinkle.

but the point is...Rumpelstiltskin.  you can conceivably  make something cool with anything given enough skill and or luck, depending on the desired outcome.

Satin can be used well. I don't mean to brag or anything, but I think it looks pretty good in my Princess Mars cosplay. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g284/Tsuruka/Cosplay/sailormoonshoot7.jpg I mean, it's a princess dress. What else am I supposed to use?

There's nothing wrong with using satin. You just have to make sure you're careful with the way you use it.

I don't think anybody here objects to proper usage of (good) satin. It's perfect for princess-style dresses and certain fantasy/magical girl stuff. Not the only fabric for those outfits, but certainly the most easily available and the most affordable if you're looking for something with a semi-gloss surface and a silky texture.

It's just when someone uses the really cheap stuff, or uses good satin when it's not appropriate--school uniforms, for example--that we cringe.

(That is a really cute outfit, and if it is satin, it's not the OMG!shiny stuff. Good choice.)

As for the cardboard I think a costume made well out of cardboard is just as good as any other. If someone knows how to make something that well with something so cheap I am all for it. I think it shows more creativity and artistic ability if you can make it look good.

I am not completely against cardboard but I am only using it for a short time. I have two pieces on my costume right now but they will soon be replaced with plastic. I think they are ok for a short time period but if done right it can also look amazing.

WHOOP for cardboard and duct tape!!!  XD

Cardboard and duct tape used for Initial D car props and cosplays based on pre-1980 video game sprites generally = win.

Tetris cosplay also fits into this clause.

my friend has this picture of Tetris pieces going the up escalator at sakuracon....it was really funny to see.

To stay on track those were made out of cardboard and still looked good.

I made my Rinoa ballroom dress out of satin bedsheets from Ross. It was a good deal for a ton of fabric, perfect color, very nice weight to it, and then made the other layer out of chiffon. The chiffon was actually the biggest pain in the butt, but the dress turned out well enough since I figured I was mostly going to be in the dark anyways and wear it for like two hours at the most. Doesn't mean my mom and I didn't work hard on it since we were going mostly without a pattern, but we didn't kill ourselves on the price.

My sister and I are kind of the go all the way or don't do it for our main costumes, but we understand if other people don't. Some people are just there to have fun and some people just did their best with limited knowledge or money. And, yes, some people just do it for the lulz. We also cosplay characters that our bodies are suited for.

Either way, I have to say that reading the back of the pattern for fabric ideas is a very good thing for anyone.
Unable to come this year. Sorry guys...

I am the simon btw. I think instead of the 'no cardboard' rule, it should come with a 'cover the cardboard with a smooth covering aka cardstock' rule.
because really, it is a pretty useful substance.

which reminds me of a certain person who goes by the name of featherweight, I'm not sure if he's been mentioned but you should take a look at his prop gallery. they are made mainly out of cardboard: http://www.cosplay.com/gallery/a36633/

as far as a fabric you should never use: I have never seen a good cosplay where crushed velvet was used.

I agree with the acting in character thing. D: Good thing I didn't work behind that counter. That Axel wouldn't be so pretty anymore with some missing teeth.
I also hate it when they act RETARDED in the mall. Like, laying down on the ground? Flipping people over that tables? C'mon people. You're in the mall, not at the con anymore. Act like a human being and not some retarded otaku - it's no wonder anime/manga/video game lovers have a bad rep; it's because you guys act dumb and 'cause more chaos then needed.

Some good things can be made out of cardboard, though! It's just when lazy people make it out of cardboard that it looks HIDEOUS.
