PSU Anime Club Costume Ball (UPDATE: 2009-10-23)
« on: March 20, 2009, 09:35:42 am »
The PSU Anime Club is hosting a Costume Ball on April 10th October 23, 2009 in about four hours(!).  It will be held in the Smith Memorial Student Union's 3rd Floor Ballroom.  The event is completely free and open to the public.

If you don't plan to wear a costume, it is preferred you come in at least semi-formal attire.  That said, we don't plan to turn anyone away.

For those of you who don't dance but want to learn, we will start the event at 6:30pm with a one-hour lesson in East Coast Swing.  DJed dance music will follow, with a break for the costume contest at 9pm.  The event ends at 11:30.

Cookies, fresh veggie snacks and hot/cold beverages will be provided.

The prizes for the costume contest will be as follows:

First Prize(1): $100 Powell's Gift Certificate http://www.powells.com/
Second Prize(3): Samurai Sword Handle Umbrella http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/japanfan/b625/
Third Prize(5): $10 Powell's Gift Certificate http://www.powells.com/

I'm looking forward to seeing you there!

Wil

Edit: Rescheduled the event to October.

Edit: Filled in some of the details which are now known.

Edit: Actually included the location of the event in the post.  (facepalm)

Edit: Updated first prize.

True, but this is a good chance for those who can't make it to Sak to still have fun :)

I would come too but like everyone has said before, Sakuracon.

If the date changes I'll totally come though since I live only five or so blocks away from PSU.

Edit: Rescheduled the event to October.

We had a bunch of reservations and such, but we hadn't actually spent any money yet, so rescheduling turned out to be pretty easy.  Also, now we get to be in the big ballroom in the student union instead of the cafeteria.  :)

Hmmm, October 23rd basically makes it a pre-Halloween party... well, no complaints. It just means more excuses for cosplay, or at least a better one.

Awesome! I'll be there since I sadly missed VMB this year.
Question tho, is the attire anime cosplay? Or just masquerade attire in general?

Thanks.

Yikes!  I guess I wasn't getting notifications of replies to this thread.  I did get the notification of the PM, though.

To answer the questions I spotted while skimming the replies, and in no particular order:

1) There is no age limit.
2) All costumes are welcome, not just anime cosplay outfits.

Sorry about the delay in getting back to everyone.  Glad to hear that folks are planning to come.  :)

Nice that someone's is. The university club that started Kumori Con isn't. :(

really, the UofO's club died?  Sad times!

Yeah, TUNAC (the Truly Unnamed Anime Club) died like two years after Kumori Con started. Most of the founders of TUNAC graduated from the U of O and shifted their focus to running Kumori Con. Interestingly, though, our con chair Beau was one of the last people to keep attending it -- he acts casual but he's pretty dedicated.

Someone tried to revive the club about two years ago. I participated, but it didn't last.

Anyway, about the PSU costume ball... I hope to come. I'll put it on my calendar. :)

I hadn't even thought of that. I just assumed that since it's right before Halloween, it'd be a normal costume ball where all you have to do is come in costume.

You probably didn't. I was one of the people who didn't dress up for the con so I was probably an uninteresting subject matter anyways. (small Asian girl with glasses if it helps)

I'm definitely going Masquerade Style!

Awesome, I'll definitely go masquarade style if I have time (sans mask of course, they don't work very well with glasses anyway...).  Should be a blast!

Do we know if there will be swing/ballroom dancing, or more of rave-style?

Edit: Filled in some of the details which are now known.

I've updated the post to reflect the current status of the Costume Ball and to answer some of the questions that have been posted in reply to the thread.

Three weeks from tonight!  :)

I really need to finish my costume...

Even though this is a costume ball, I figure I should ask this anyway, just to be sure.

Are masks allowed? I was planning on having my face painted, and I just want to be sure that's within the rules before I make this my for sure costume.

What kind of dance?  It's my experience that learning different dance styles helps all my dancing.  :)

The DJ will have music appropriate to Swing (East Coast/West Coast/Lindy, which actually covers a lot of music, including modern stuff) and whatever we provide to him.  I may provide a modern Tango song for myself.  If you have any specific requests, please PM me.

Yeah, I was intentionally unclear in the hopes that everyone would interpret that themselves.  :)

I guess I was thinking in terms of long pants and button-up shirts for the gentlement and the equivalent for the ladies.

The contest isn't anime exclusive I'm guessing. Game characters count also? (Cloud, Mario, Sora, and therefore disney characters, etc.)

I'ma coming as someone Super. With something meant to protect me from the rain...not a parasol.

I have a CD of various anime/game music that can be played randomly in any order. I'll PM the playlist.

AS far as i understand, its a costume contest for any kind of costume, not just anime or video game characters.

Reporting live from the event, the East Coast Swing lesson is one-third complete and the DJed music is set to start just before 8.

If you're reading this and plan to come, there's no better time to head up here.  :)

So you're Vault Dweller 13! I loved your costume and am a bit envious. I couldn't dress up in a costume so I dressed in a dress that I always wanted to wear out.

The Ball was fun! Are you guys going to plan another one?

btw - I was in the light purple-gray dress. Came in with Altair. =)

Hey there, I was the male Link that showed up. :) I had a blast; it was worth the trip from Eugene/Springfield. I didn't know people quite as well as other events, but everybody was well worth talking to. Thanks so much for the gift certificate, Wil. It's the first time I've won anything with that costume, partially because I have yet to enter the cosplay contest at a con.

My only regret is that I missed the Zelda Temple Trance Remix that I requested. :( Took awhile to get my dang costume on. But on the plus side we had a nice little mini-party in the bathroom, it seems... :-X

Well, thanks for your confidence. :) By "top three spots" do you mean top three costumes or top three prizes? Heh, there were a lot of prizes.

There was no cake in the bathroom party, but there was one person bypassing the gender rules. Hey, I needed someone to help with my wig.

Hmmm, a ? block. I'd hit that.

Were you happy that I was wearing the sword on the left shoulder, or that I really am left-handed? :) I'm glad Link is left-handed, since I am. Interestingly, he's always been that way, even on the NES. (Wii version doesn't count >:()

Oh, okay. Sadly, I have seen a hairy guy in a Winry costume before. :( But I will happily acknowledge that this was not the case here.

Hey, you asked me to do it. :P I'm not sure why, now that I come to think of it...

I believe you weren't the only one to comment on the left-handed thing, hence the confusion. :) That was nice; almost nobody notices these subtleties at cons because they're so frenzied and hectic...
