Anyone want to start a para para team in the Portland area?
« on: February 23, 2009, 01:50:48 pm »
I checked the rules and this seemed like it would be okay to post, if it's not, feel free to delete it. :)

Well, I moved here from the midwest about seven months ago.  Where I come from, para para teams were pretty common.  I was on a team that traveled around Missouri/Kentucky/Arkansas/Oklahoma/Kansas doing para para performances and worked as their manager for six years.

SO, there's a huge para para even at SakuraCon in April and I thought, what a great time to introduce some new people to the dance style!

For those that don't know what para para is, let me explain.  Para para is a Japanese form of synchronized club dancing, where the moves are preset and it is performed in unison similar to line dancing.  The moves are mostly done with the hands and there is minimal footwork.  The dances are performed to several types of music including eurobeat, hyper techno, and some trance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1Go7Si0NWs&feature=related - Here's an example of techpara, which is para para done to hyper techno.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hMPLS0clpI - An example of normal para para, done to eurobeat.  This is a harder song. Most eurobeat songs are fairly easy.

SO! If anyone is interested, I'd like to put together a three minute performance for SakuraCon.  After that, the sky is the limit.  If the people that volunteer want to do more performances, I have experience in booking and can get us more shows.  If not, well, I'd like to at least hold regular practices and teach panels at local area conventions.

No experience is okay, all I need are some guys or girls that are dedicated to learning.  If you're under 18, you'll need parent's permission.  Para para is a super fun way to get a little more in touch with another genre of Japanese youth culture, as well as get some fresh air and exercise.  If you're interested at all, please reply and we'll figure out a meeting time from there. :)

Yeah, the dance that they are always doing in the Smap videos is Night of Fire by Niko.  Smap x Smap did contribute some to a massive boost in the popularity of para para in the early 2000's.  Their skits are funny and have actually featured some famous para para dancers.

I tend to focus more on recent dances and keep up with current trends in both the dances and the fashion that surrounds it.  I try to learn what is popular in the clubs now and incorporate it into performances.  I've been into it since, gosh, I guess 2002 and it's always been a fun hobby.  There are literally thousands of dances, there's also dances that incorporate elements of freestyle and even dancing with a fan.  The dances vary from silly and fun, to aggressive, to even sexy.  It goes across the board and I really do enjoy teaching it.

http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/entertainment/watch/v4194541AFanwqfT This is the kind of stuff I mean when I say performances. :) This is my team at Naka-kon last year.  Please excuse the screw ups though~!  We had some really bad technical difficulties right before the performance and we were all stressing out and then they just tossed us on stage.  We were shaken up and it took a bit to get into the groove.  It's always the bad performance they catch on film! *LOL*  But, yeah, that's me in the dress.

If this is something you'd like to teach/talk about at our convention this year, let's talk :)  It's a great idea, and I think you would have a lot of people interested in it.

Oh, oh! I'm interested ^^
I'm a newbie to para para, but I am 20 and conveniently live in Portland.

If we dress as a Yamanba, will we get more street cred?

Lol- j/k. I'd like to learn some parapara moves- I love all kinds of dancing ^_^. And I've made up a few "para para" dances to some western songs that I like (though it mainly consists of me moving my arms around in some semblance of movement while singing off-key to some rock or pop song that I like... I think The Slants would die if they saw some of the "dancing" I do to their CD in my room).

Which does beg the question, will we have opportunities to choreograph our own dances to different music? I like Parapara, but I find it kinda restrictive in the type of music that's usually Parapara-ed to and how there's a preset move to parapara songs. Dancing is about creativity and if you stifle the creativity, then you stifle the style of dance.

Glad you're both interested. =D

AnimeMatrix:  *LOL* Dressing up as a manba will give me nightmares.

Anyway, um, para para is probably one of the least creative dance forms out there for people who just participate in the dancing. Ha ha.  BUT! It is common in the para para community to make your own routines and film them for others to learn.  Also, in techpara, you get to make up your own freestyle in the dance (normally the second verse is completely freestyle, but it varies from song to song) using either your hands or, if it's an older song, using a fan.  It's fun.

Could we parapara to something other than Eurobeat? I like Eurobeat, but there's only so much sugary-hyper-happiness I can take before I'll go crazy. Besides, I think a parapara dance to "Never Gonna Give You Up" would be HILARIOUS!
