« on: February 07, 2009, 12:29:28 am »
Anyone see it yet? Went tonight to see it and wow, it was really good. Everyone go this weekend, let's get those box office numbers up for it!

By the way, for anyone that doesn't know, it was done by Laika, an Oregon animation studio (currently in Hillsboro) owned by Phil Knight. http://www.laika.com/

Is it actually in 3D at most theaters?
Is it actually in 3D at any theaters in the area?

I don't usually go for such gimmicks but I think a film like this would be really fun in 3D.

Maybe at Bridgeport or Century?  We should all look into going sometime if we can find it 3D

So anyone see it in 3-D that also wear their own prescription glasses?  My wife, my son, and I all wear glasses, so we are wondering if the 3-D glasses will fit over our own glasses, I heard that the 3-D used for this is different, so I don't know what type of glasses are being supplied at the theater.  Plan to see this tomorrow in Eugene at the VRC.

I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen anything in 3D for real. If I had a pair of those glasses--and if (as Wuntvor's inquiring) they actually work in conjunction with regular prescription specs, I'd've enjoyed having them on for last week's Chuck! (Well except for the icky Jeff scenes!) I think I read that Phil Knight bought the studio so his son could be the lead animator on this film? Something like that? (In the Emerald.) I'd be curious to see it, though Ebert's review had me thinking I wouldn't particularly like the plot or characters.

I saw it yesterday and it was OUTSTANDING!   Not sure I'd take a little kid (anyone under 8) to it though as there were a few scared kids in the audience.

Wuntvor, to answer your question, the 3D glasses (at least the ones in Vancouver) fit over my prescription ones, so there wasn't a problem there.

Thanks EmAino,  I was actually in the theater when you posted (show started at 11:45AM), but I appreciate you replying just the same and, yes, the 3-D glasses are just a bit wider than normal glasses, so they do fit over your prescription ones.  I really enjoyed the 3-D effects.  The theater at VRC in Eugene had 3-D previews as well.  We saw the preview for UP, the next Pixar film,  in 3-D.  It looks pretty amazing that way.  They also had a preview for 9.  That one looks kinda bizarre and creepy, but it is by Tim Burton after all.

Coraline was very entertaining.  I haven't seen a 3-D film in quite a long time, so it was kind of interesting to see how much the medium has evolved.  It is a lot like those 3-D viewmasters they used to have (and maybe still do).  I want to see if I can find 3-D images from the film or even a 3-D trailer, so I can look at them with the glasses on.   ;D  We stayed until the very end of the credits, just so we could watch the angelic scottish terriers fly around with the bat terriers.  They also have a very interesting "come right at you" bit that follows the credits, so stay for it.  I felt like I could reach out and touch one of the paper mice.  Anyway, I recommend it.  Go see it, and you even get to keep the cool glasses.  8)

My family and I went to see that yesterday, but the local theater didn't offer it in 3-D. :(  I liked it anyway though.

The theater was mostly empty, but there were a couple families with really little kids.  They didn't seem that scared though; whenever anything scary happened, they'd just ask their parents "What that?"

On a side note, I REALLY want to see 9.  I'm not very impressed with the voice cast, but the movie itself looks really good.

I saw it today, in standard formate not 3D. I tried seeing it in 3D, but it was sold out :(. I enjoyed it none the less.

They also had a preview for 9.  That one looks kinda bizarre and creepy, but it is by Tim Burton after all.

I am so excited about 9. When I was a film student 9 was the student short film that won the Student Academy Award for Best film or something back in like 2004/2005. We watched the original short in class (which was a silent film). I have been waiting four years or so to see this as a feature film. Yeah it does have the Tim Burton flare, but should be different because he didn't direct it. The mood of the film was present before Tim Burton stuck his hand in it.

It is a surprisingly disturbing movie, for a kids movie. I think that there is some of that Burton weirdness creeping in from somewhere.

Haven't seen it yet, but I definitely get that feeling from the trailer and premise. Seems very much like a twisted fairy tale type story.

I am glad we are having disturbing movies for children. Anyone ever think how horrid the tales from the brothers Grimm are? The point was to get kids to listen and not be a victim.

I wonder if we'll have to wait until next month to see it, as we are kind of broke now.

Yeah, that is why I love the Grimm Fairy tales so much, they were not the candy-coated feelgoods that followed after them and are propagated today.

But maybe that is just my dark obsession talking.

I know with some movies, they advertise it in 3-D but the 3-D doesn't really add anything to the movie, you know what I mean? Like Beowulf for example, that did nothing for me in 3-D. Would you guys (And gals) say that Coraline benefited from the 3-D screening?

Now I'm back from a long trip, I can finally go see it! I've been looking forward to Coraline ever since I saw a preview for it when I went to see Beowolf- ANYTHING associated with Neil Gaiman is like cat nip for me. As for the creepiness, the book was by Neil Gaiman, so it's to be expected (though some of his other children's books aren't that creepy).

I love Neil Gaiman ^_^.

GAH!  Not only are we saying "pen" and "pin" the same we are spelling them that way as well!  A common problem in the state of Orygun.

You write with a pen, you can also keep pigs in one.

a pin is a pointy thing used to hold your cloth in place when sewing.  You may also use them in your hair, to hold it in place.

Oh and what was sticking out at you was a needle.  The thing you thread when you sew and use to poke through the fabric and draw the thread through it.   ::)  OK, I'm done.  I just couldn't let that one slide.

I love when she opens the door and the tunnel just stretches out in front of you and makes you feel like you're in Coraline's POV when she's crawling through, that wouldn't have been the same without the 3D.

I saw it a few days ago and I thought it was pretty good. However, having read the book first, there were some changes that I didn't like and others that I didn't mind. Neil Gaiman's my favorite author so whenever they make any screen adaptations of his work I MUST see them.

I just saw it last night. It was actually a little disappointing. I think it was just because I had such high expectations. Dakota Fanning just could not bring it for the voice. Also I have issues with main characters whom are idiots. I know people always say, if they don't make mistakes there are no stories, I get that but still I mean, making mistakes does not determine if your smart or not, because even Einstein makes mistakes. I also understand that she is supposed to be a naive child but still there was just something that seriously annoyed me about her.
