ok, I know I've been a pain....with Transformers being anime or not...with my video being over the time limit....
now I have a question about the RETRO category:

So does the audio include 1983, or just before?

As in "1983 and before", or "1982 and before"?
Because the song I'm using is from 1983..and it was one of the last songs this band did.
Cuz if 1983 is included then I meet b) and c)...and this video would sooo rock in this category.

My video is like 5 minutes 45 seconds. But if I remember correctly there were only two OLD SCHOOL entries last year...so time might not be so much of an issue is there is a lack of entries for the Category...right?  ;D

Good questions, and thank you.

No. The phrase they came up with was "anything created before 1983," so that means
"1982 and before." Drat.

This will be a judges' call, as always. Yes they have bent the duration limit occasionally, but the AMV really has to maintain the intensity - which means a 5 minute AMV that feels like 3min.
However, unless your story really needs almost six minutes to tell or set up, then I'm nearly sure that some audio editing can snip out 60 seconds: delete one chorus/verse cycle, or wipe out an instrumental bridge, etc.

Best of luck!

Yes. We may open a new 'Iron Chef' thread** if there's anything that really needs discussion besides:

- Show up at time 'X' to pick up your packs and hear about this year's challenge goal (aka 'secret ingredient,)
- Have fun editing, and
- Show up at time 'Y' and show us whatcha got.

** EDIT: New Iron Chef thread started.

I was wondering--will slash entries be allowed? Like, I make a lot of GaaraxLee ones. There's nothing explicit, just kinda implied lurve.

I'd really like to know. Thanks.

Again (for the 'n'-th time) I will submit everything that plays OK to the judges' panel.
Their primary instructions are to use the guidelines (the contest rules) to pick the
most ENTERTAINING show / playlist that they can.

You can cross over ANY combination of anime characters that you dare try, as long
as the RESULT is "PG-13." If you crack up the panel, then your work will probably
crack up the audience, and that's what we all want. Especially in "Random Amusement."

The trick is to make sure as WIDE a swath of people as possible will enjoy your story.
That's something I have no control over. It's not our job to 'educate' the audience or
'make them more openminded,' it's our job to ENTERTAIN them. How you do that is your call.

But remember, the actual audience members are free to FAIL TO RESPOND despite
how enlightened or tolerant or egalitarian or unbiased we may wish people to be. Only a
few years ago, a cosplay skit group tossed out a yaoi joke and the house went cold. We
can't FORCE people to respond evenhandedly.

Here are some VERY creepy news stories from only a few WEEKS ago:
http://www.hardwarezone.com/news/view.php?id=12852&cid=
http://consumerist.com/5160187/identifying-yourself-as-a-lesbian-gets-you-banned-on-xbox-live
http://consumerist.com/tag/complaints/?i=5008908&t=gay-player-name-banned-by-xbox-live

This is MICROSOFT - supposedly Pacific-NW/progressive, etc...
Also, note that a number of Xbox Live members sent nastygrams
to the girl who identified herself as a lesbian.** [What's up with that?!?]

Note in the third story above, the quote "greater Xbox live community isn't exactly welcome to gay people, i spend a lot of time muting people on Halo3." What if some of those people, or their ilk, happen to show up in our audience? How much of a slice of Kumoricon fandom are they?
Can we know? Probably not...
(Please do NOT flame your friendly contest coordinator over the content of these stories, I am just passing information along about how OTHER people react...)

So - make your BEST work, and use your best judgement and intuition about how to entertain a DIVERSE audience - this means slices of people who LIKE it, slices who don't care either way (and may FAIL to respond just because they don't find it ENTERTAINING,) and slices who actively dislike it or get TURNED OFF - like the Halo 3 people mentioned above. This could be like your race car with an engine that has some cylinders firing, some missing, and others knocking (backfiring?) while you are in competition with other works that get most or ALL cylinders firing smoothly.

But I personally will NOT be one to stop you.
Make your AMV GREAT!!!

And - only three years ago, an Ouran AMV WON at Kumoricon! [Yay!]
So who knows what can happen! :-D

** PS For COMPLETE and TOTAL STUPIDITY: A man named "Richard Gaywood" gets BANNED because his REAL, NORMAL NAME has (hush-hush, now) Jiii-Ehey-Wai in it!?!?

Sorry for making you repeat yourself for the nth time. D:

But if it's any consolation, you really really really helped me out. And I appreciate it a lot.

*Big thumbs up*

HECK YES TIME TO REFINE MY AMV AND SEND IT INNNNNN~

Question, though. There's an earlier and not-as-good version of the AMV I'm considering submitting posted on my Youtube. Less than fifty people have watched it, though, so there isn't a very good chance that someone in the audience will have seen it before (plus the video will be much better-refined). Should I take the Youtube video down?

You can do whatever you want with YouTube.

The Kumoricon rules do not say anything about, and do not
disqualify entries based on:

- How old the AMV is,
- Other competitions the AMV where the was entered,
- Whether or not other competitions selected the AMV to show,
- Where or to whom the AMV was shown already,
- Other prizes or accolades the AMV has won in other competitions,
- What sites you can get copies of or watch the AMV.

None of that matters.

Video QUALITY has often been a factor in which entries get selected though, so if you're creating or remastering a video, then GOOD on YOU!

Looking forward to everyone's entries ...

Either aspect ration should work fine.
I'll be using VLC Player or Media Player Classic.

Uhm, is uploading our entries to animemusicvideos.org still an acceptable place for the judges to download the videos? I know two years ago that's one of the only places that we could upload them to.

Yes, uploading to www.animemusicvideos.org is a great way to submit.
Just send me an e-mail with the upload link. I'll d/l it, test it on a player, and send you a private 'CONFIRM' e-mail that it plays OK, or I'll tell you what seemed to go wrong (rare.)

However, please do *NOT* send PMs to me on this forum.
It's best to send an email to me directly.

Looking forward to your AMVs!

Usually things get going around October.

This gives everyone some time to reflect on what worked, and what could have been improved, etc.

'Stragglers' sometimes come in, which I retain for the following year, and there are also some people who submit 5 or 6 AMVs and say 'I know the limit is 4, but can you hold onto these others in case there's a category next year they work in?'

Two years ago I had about 8 of those...

Thanks! Well, I've been to the AMV Contest 3 years in a row (this will be #4 and the first I've submitted to) so I have a fairly good idea which categories are likely to stick around. And if I make one that doesn't fit in next year, certainly nothing lost with that. :3 I've totally gotten into making these things.

I look forward to October!
