Kcon in the Guinness Book? Could it happen?
« on: January 27, 2009, 01:39:05 am »
So I was flipping though the Guinness book that's specifically for video games, and apparently the largest gathering of video game cosplayers is 80.

ONLY EIGHTY? We can beat that EASY. Who's with me?

There may be some stipulation that it can't be at a convention, but even in off times we've got to have more people than that willing to flood Pioneer Square with gamery goodness. And if we *can* have it during a con (I'm not sure of the rules exactly...I know you can have duplicate characters since the picture included a flock of Marios), then we'd make it in easily.

Anyone want to give it a shot?

I might be in, but first, I would like a little clarity.  Do the cosplayers have to be cosplaying as video game characters specifically, or could anime characters be included?

I think one of the bigger cons is trying to do this..Fanime maybe?

To get these records though you have to have a representative from the Guinness Book and all, has to be pretty well organized if you are interested in it.

Hell, I don't know. I was hoping a con rep could check further into it. I think you have to have originated from a video game rather than just appearing in one; least, that's my guess.

But that'd cover everyone from Mario to Phoenix Wright to Chun-Li to Cloud, so that's pretty nice.

um yeah we've been beat

http://www.kotaku.com.au/games/2008/06/video_game_cosplay_record_brutally_beaten-2.html

tho i still think we could beat 600, but the rules say the charater had to originate from a video game, which raises to mind which came first pokemon game or show?

Still not that many.  Again, I think we can get over 700 if we actually try, and that's if we just do it as a separate event.  If we set a time for record-breaking-attempt at the con itself, we can probably break 1000.  It would be a great way to bring attention to Kumoricon's gaming interest too to help us compete with the "Gamers go to PAX, weeaboos go to Kumoricon" attitude people seem to be developing.

Looks like I was a bit off the mark with Fanime wanting to do this..people on the Anime Expo boards are wanting to do this actually. Not sure if they are going to go through with it, though, apparently that record of 80 was beat in London last year.

Here's some guidelines from the London thing:

Key Guidelines:
1. All participants must be wearing costumes representing characters from video games
2. Characters from other media such as films, television, books and comics are acceptable; however these must have featured in video games before any subsequent appearances in other media.  For example:  a. Sonic the Hedgehog first appeared in a video game in 1991, prior to subsequent television and comic book appearances; therefore Sonic qualifies for the attempt
b. Batman first featured as a comic book character in 1939, prior to his first appearance as a video game character in 1986; therefore Batman does not qualify.

Games, but the character would have had to start there. That means the Erika we had this year would count, but not my Kaede since she's from a comic, and not Ash (it'd have to be Red instead, and probably strictly gameverse Red rather than any of his manga incarnations). Someone like Misty would have to be in her swimsuit instead of the shorts and cutoff shirt from the show, and the 4th gen girl would probably have to have black hair because blue would make her Dawn and green would make her Mitsumi.

Although this is a bugaboo given that Ho-Oh appeared in the first episode of the show, years before it would be in a released game. And I wonder if human-type costumes of animal characters would count.

Princess Peach volunteers! : D

any one got a count of how many we have so far? Im almost sure weve probally beaten it.

what we need is a video game photoshoot or something..... combine the KH photoshoots, FF photoshoots, and other games and we have defiantly got em beat... we just need all of us together, at a park out side the con or something. Im sure we can do it >:3

EDIT:

xD Ill tell her that some one else recognized her. The Erika was my friend, I'll drag her with me.

Most of my cosplays are video game characters, I'll join! =D Well, hopefully this would be at k-con, if it isn't at the con I might not be able to make it.

Now, the hard part - which character to choose. o.o; *runs to the cosplay closet*

Yes, bwahaha, I have a cosplay closet... nothing else is worthy of being hung up on a hanger. XD
