Hotels a must?
« on: March 04, 2005, 11:39:41 pm »
Hi, I'm Tomecko and will be a first-time con goer! I'm pretty excited to go to Kumoricon in September, but the hotel rates are rather steep for a broke college kid like me.  :?

As I'm local, I was thinking of maybe just driving into Portland for the three days and forgoing the hotel. Is that recommended? I don't want to miss out on all the fun, and I want to reserve a table in the artist's alley so I'm not sure if arriving a little later in the mornings will make a difference.

What's the deal? Is it better to stay at the hotel for the length of the con, even if it eats the pocketbook?

you have to consider how late you're going to stay at the con.  the con could last til midnight or longer and then there are hotel parties you may end up attending.  driving obviously means no drinking either.

It's all about splittin the cost with others. i usually share a rom with 3 other people so i only pay 1/4 of the standard price. that along with the group rates for cons is a good deal.

And now I'm a catgirl?

Aww, more fresh victims for my ever growing army of the undead.

Wait, did I just think that or type it?

HAHA, the mistake has been made and now I know your plan. I will make it my mission to make sure Con goers are equipped with tools against the undead. Silver swords and holy symbols for everyone! Now I just gotta get the money to fund it.

Truth be told, a user by the name of Sabyr once wrote that in a thread on the MT forums.  I loved the quote so much I thought about making it my signature.  So as far as the quote goes, credit goes to Sabyr.

I still laugh everytime I read it and imagine the Monty Python people actually saying those words.

Could always stay in your vehicle. that would only be around $12 a night ^ ^

Or for us portlanders we could probably find cheaper nearby accomandations. Traveling around the city isn't nearly so intimidating when, you know, you LIVE in the city.

Besides, having visited Seattle now for the Sakuracon I can definitely say our transit system PWNS Seattle's transit system.

I might still go for a room at the con if I can get it cheap enough (got it down to a $15/day split at Sakuracon), but I still think the above options are feasible. More so the closer into downtown you live.
