Avatar: The Last Air Bender - Live Action Movie

M. Night Shyamalan has found the cast for The Last Airbender, his upcoming live-action film based on the popular anime-inspired Nickelodeon series.
http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2008/12/shyamalan-casts.html

Noah Ringer as Aang, I can't find a picture. He's a karate star from Texas.

Jackson Rathbone as Sokka

Nicola Peltz as Katara

Jesse McCartneyas Zuko

He's also Roxas apparently...

THOSE ARE HORRIBLE CHOICES!!!!!!  >:(

They're good looking but they don't fit the characters at all! And I'm protesting if they make Jesse McCartney Zuko! ZUKO IS THE AWESOMENESS AND JESSE MCCARTNEY IS NOT!!!  >:( >:( >:(

Sorry about this outburst but I thought it should be said.

Alright but looking at his eyes he looks a lot like Zuko. Keep in mind that you can change the hair and add makeup to look like the character. Take the Joker for example, I had no clue that was Heath Leger for the longest time. Also you would never think that he could pull off that roll but he did is perfectly. You shouldn't judge something before you try it/see it.

well they might be able to pull it off looks wise but......I don't think they could act the characters very well. and it justs seems like a disgrace to have the voice actor for rufio play zuko and then go to jesse? nu uh. he not awesome enough.

but I must say I like that its being directed by m. night shamilagn(not sure if that's how you say it or spell it)

The look in his eye, and the shape of it and whatnot. But not the color! And I just don't see him as Zuko! I don't think he can pull that off properly. He doesn't seem like the violent-Zuko type. Or even the nice-Zuko type. He seems like the high school pretty boy type. And that's how it should stay.

I personally don't think that is true. No one can ever tell when I wear the ones I got. I mean if you are making a subtle change no one will notice. Zuko's eyes are yellow and his eyes are yellowish in the center around the pupil (that is what would be seen if anything) so I don't think you would be able to see it.

...Hm. I like the choice for Sokka a lot. The face shape is really awesome, specifically the jaw. [..or maybe it's just the angle?] ....Although, I do kind of wish there was more of a darker complexion with Sokka and Katara.

so I told a bunch of people today about this including all the actors and actresses in it and who's directing it. they all looked at me like I was crazy and where I had heard such a thing. they also thought jesse mccartney was a bad idea. XD

I don't really like that Jesse McCartney is playing anyone, especially Zuko. Their Katara could be worse... whose gonna be playing Toph? Will there even be a Toph?
I'd also like to know if they have anyone to play Aang yet.

It's being directed by M. Night Shyamalan?

Expect a
TWIST!

We find out that Aang has lost his memory and is actually the long lost heir to the fire nation. He was undercover with the air benders when he was encased in the iceberg (by that last Avatar). Once he regains his memories he kills Sokka (nooooooo!) and duels Zuko for control of the Fire Nation. Katara helps Zuko defeat Aang (avenging her brother's death) and their newfound love brings peace to the world.
THAT'S a twist.

or worse.

We will discover that Aang is actually just another average American kid who dreamed the whole world while asleep in science class.

Actually, I'm really kind of excited for this movie. xD Even with all the wank going on about the actors. They matched face shapes to characters well, and the whole point of acting is to be someone who you really aren't so we'll see how that all goes, I guess. I, personally, think Jesse's face matches Zuko quite well.

also, @ people who wank about not asian people getting cast, the whole point of avatar is that the different nations are basically representing different areas/continent in the actual world. not everyone has to be asian, really.

fire nation = china
water nation = arctic and antarctica
earth nation = north america & native americans
and well, air nation is kind of gone, so who knows?

...just my personal take on the movie. : D

I really can't wait for this movie to come out. ^_^

even if it is bad, it may only be bad to those that have seen the cartoon. It might spark interest into the cartoon therefore getting more people into anime :P (if you consider avatar anime ::))

As I've said before I also like hearing other people interpretation of things, but it seems like most people want the movie to follow the cartoon. I wouldn't mind if the movie deviated a little from the cartoon just to get back to the same resolution ;D

I really enjoyed the ending of Avatar. And a few of my friends agree with the fact that as long as the ending is the same or similar it doesn't matter how it gets there....as long as it's not TOO far off XD

I realized something the other day, why are people complaining about ethnicity when Avatar doesn't take place on Earth? the only elasticities are the very slight deviations in skin color because NONE of the cultures actually match up to Earth. you can make all sorts of comparisons but they don't matter because it's purely fiction. all they have to do is make this guy pale and that guy tan.

Message from Paramount to Avatar fans: STFU
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AngryZenMaster/~3/icflL2LziiM/

The producers of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender movie adaptation have heard your concerns about the casting of the film and don’t care. Fans responded angrily when it was announced that the lead characters would be portrayed by Caucasian actors. They set up websites, posted on blogs, and even sent letters to the producers of the film. And they don’t care. After a series of angry twitters between himself and fans, producer Frank Marshall gave his final comment:

-----"The casting is complete and we did not discriminate against anyone. I am done talking about it."

At this point, it is clear that Frank Marshall and co. do not care what fans of the show think. Filming has already begun with no casting changes. Round one goes to the producers. Round two? Well, that’s up to us.

There's more at the link.

They don't care because either way the film will be profitable. They will collect royalties every year through cable, foreign distribution, home video, DVD and Blu-ray sales.

Why make something GREAT when GOOD sells.

Pics originally came from USA Today.

Apparently the actor who plays Aang could actually take Zuko's actor in a fight. Well that's nice to know.  :)

It doesn't look to bad to me. I am still going to hold out hope. On the plus side that isn't Jesse McCartney and if it is then it doesn't look like him and I stand by my original thought that they can make people look like whatever they want them to look like.

HEY it's the guy from Slumdog Millionaire! I liked that movie a lot :3

I just saw it last night as well, and had no idea this was actually happening, thought it was all rumor and speculation.

Was thoroughly impressed though. And M. Night is doing it? Awesome. I always really liked the story of Avatar, just couldn't keep up with all the filler there seemed to be in the anime. So, yeah, movie looks awesome, though.

Hopefully not. The trailer at least looks a bit more responsible than Dragon Ball.

Oh, is it really planned to be a trilogy? That's epic.

Yeah, the first movie is based off of the water book, second movie off of earth, etc~

I feel like the AtLAB universe could do without, especially if the movie ends up bombing. There's so much they'd need to fit in though! 20 episodes into one movie? I'm relatively certain that the first movie will include Aang + Sokka + Katara begginning their journey -> air temple visit -> Zuko chasing them along the way -> Water, training with Pakku -> final battle. I hope Suki's somehow squeezed in but I won't be surprised if she's left out. Especially tragic would be the lack of cabbage man and foaming mouth guy- I shudder to think!

As for the third season, the finale on it's own has enough material for a live action movie. I just don't see the point to turning this into a live action movie but I guess that's just me~

Well really, is there ever a reason for a live-action adaptation of an anime? Or a manga for that matter? It usually just filters down to money and profit. If something can be milked, it probably will be.

The positive side....exposure can usually be potentially more positive than negative. At least more people will have the chance to learn about Avatar.

Aang looks drugged! He's ON a bender.

I think those images look pretty good. I am glad when I can see cast photos and not recognize anyone. They did that for Narnia and it works so much better. I don't come to the film with any preconceived notions of how this person is going to modify the character based on their acting type.

I like that they don't really look like people in costumes either. They just look like realistic representations of the characters. Looks good to me.

They did, they put up an ad in Vanity Fair that said
"Wanted: East Indians and Eskimos to star in some weird cartoon-live-action movie. Stunt experience a plus. Only academy award winners need apply."

Unfortunately there's never been an Inuit movie that got so much as a nomination.

The actors have all changed. 'cept aang.
http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi4008247833/
That's the trailer.

They changed the name from:
Avatar: The Last Airbender
to
The Last Airbender

It looks better though.
And the guy who played the main character in Slumdog Millionaire plays Zuko.

I think it's going to be ok, not great, ok

I agree, I thought the trailer looked pretty good. For not having seen the entire series, I think they did a great job of depicting a main aspect of the show's conflict, even though it may have been simplified for the sake of the teaser. We'll see how it turns out. As with other things coming out soon, I'm excited about it, despite the reasons there may be to feel otherwise.

Seeing as how most people are unpleased with the choice of actors, the fight choreography and overall movie content better be as Amazing and Epic as the trailer.

Lol cause if not, someone will be there to tell ya so.

Ugh, freaking work filters!  I can't see any of the pictures or movie trailers~ >_<

Hopefully I'll remember to look into it when I get home.. I'm excite about the thoughtm but we'll see how I feel after the movie.

Someone said they changed Zuko's actor?  That makes me a little sad and a little happy at the same time.  Seeing as how Jesse did the voice for Roxas in KH2, and Roxes is pissy enough to be similar to Zuko in some ways.. I think it would have been interesting.

That and I'd love to imagine Zuko saying, "I'll catch you, Avatar! You and your beautiful soul!!" to Aang.. XD

I agree.. I'd almost settle for a cameo of some large black man in her outfit.. like how she was portrayed when the group sat in on the theater production of them.

I loved it when the kid came out and told Zuko, "Nice outfit! But your scar's on the wrong side.."  XD It reminded me of an anime con where fangirls runs around screaching at the slouched Ls "L bends at the KNEES!" >O<

to be better.... loooooowww bar very low bar....
it is resting on the ground really

and its not a bar so much as a chop stick

infact the chop stick is in a ditch so you dont even have to jump just walk over it....

Hey, don't lump Speed Racer into that!
If you compare the two the movie was EXTREMELY faithful to the original cartoon.

The colors and the crazy driving were all exactly what they needed to make Speed Racer come to life.

Im going to wait and see more footage before I get a better view of how the movie's going to be. The trailer looked pretty amazing for what was added in there, and the picture's look really good from what I've seen, but in the end, it come's down to how well they act and how Night does the story which will finally determine how the movie is going to be.

I think it has a chance of being an entertaining movie at the very least...I love movies ao I will probably enjoy it. Now as far as how they did to mirror the show, its very seldom that movies pull that off very well, whether its video game, book, or tv series, there are always going to be differences that fans of the original will hate. Lucky for me, this is a series that I have only seen a couple partial episodes of, so I will enjoy the movie more than others...unless they make is terrible like that chun-li movie, because then there is no hope.

I do not feel that I spammed...I just found this thread because of the other one someone started lol...since I am at work most of the time when I post, it takes me a while sometimes to see a thread I want to post in :P I saw this one & remembered the preview simply because I have enjoyed M. Night's other movies...more or less...& am interested to see it. I thought it matched the topic fairly well.

I hope it's not like the Chun-Li movie... It does have a few few good actors, so it's got that going for it... But in the end, it all comes down to how it's written, how it look's, and how they get the characters to act. If they don't have these 3 concepts done well, then the movie wont be that good, but I do hope it is done well.

Ya, I will be watching it when it goes to video only though...so I'm sure everyone will have some input here before I see it. Doubt I will go to the theater for it.

I'll be going to theaters for it, because I'm a fan of the series... But I'm going to keep in mind that there will be some changes, and I don't mind, as long as those changes make sense (unlike the Harry Potter movies where the stuff they changed made no sense to me)

A lot of things are getting new movies these days.

The Last Airbender, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3...

Toy Story 3's different- yeah it's a new movie, but it's not a crazy adaption from source material, it's a another sequal to a movie. Cartoon to movie is way wilder. I'm pretty pumped for TS3 actually~<3

Ahhh... I wonder what they're gonna sound like when they talk...

I'm really excited to see this movie. I'm hopeful that the actors they chose for the parts will be good fits. I know a lot of people have been saying that they don't think Jackson Rathbone or Jesse McCartney are like the characters or whatever. They're actors. It's their job to take on a role and become a different person. I think the girl they chose for Katara is lovely. What sold me on the actor playing Aang was when I saw a preview and it like, blew my mind and that was when I really got excited for the movie.

Only skimmed the thread so sorry to repeat if it's already been mentioned, but out of curiosity is anyone thinking of cosplaying for the movie? My friends and I usually avoid doing that kind of thing for movie premieres, but what the hell, it's Avatar so why not?

Oh! I totally found a manga in Fred meyers today, based SOULY! On the live action movie, it was so horrible I wanted to kick the book in the neck.
So all of the characters looked like their characters in the movie. XD dear god man, the creators love to eff over their fan base.
