Wigs?
« on: February 22, 2005, 07:32:46 pm »
-sob- I'm having trouble finding a wig for my character... I'm going as Yuzuki (From Chobits, it's Minoru's Persocom Sister. I'm also going as Dejiko... Why must I choose characters with brilliantly colored hair?! Just google for a picture.)
I was just wondering what I should do... Human hair wigs are expensive...
should I just grow my hair out (It's about shoulder length now) and dye it?
Or continue to look for a wig?
Can you dye not human hair wigs? -ponders-
This is kinda what I was thinking for Yuzuki, then just braiding it.

Well, personally I wouldn't enjoy damaging my hair by all of the bleaching and dyeing that would require. It'd be a lot of work really. Wigs are usually the best option since you can style them ahead of time and save your hair.

I'd say that amphigory.com and witchwigs.com are probably the best places to get wigs. If you wait until the con gets closer there's usually a wholesale order for witchwigs going on too which makes it MUCH cheaper (like 40-50%).

Oh, and you can't really dye a synthetic wig, but you could color it if you really wanted to (I've heard sharpies work best). I've seen a type of dye for synthetics, but the color selection is a bit limited. It's at the same site as the link below.

ahh.. and another thing, yuzuki has pigtails of a sort, so that could get a little complicated as far as styling goes since parting the hair in a wig will let the netting and stuff show through. Here's a tutorial at Katie Bair's site on how to fix that: http://www.katiebair.com/wigtutorial_parting.html

make sure you do research first.  a wig is much different from human hair and has to be treated differently.

I have never used a wig before so I was kina afriad to go through whitch wigs or somewhere that charged more than twenty bucks for a wig. I knwo when you get that low you are gonna get a low quality wig, but if I totally mess it up (I am not gonna dye it  but I am cutting bangs and styling them) I dont want to be out forty bucks. If its your first time using wigs at all, like me, I suggest somewhere cheap like easleys:
http://www.easleys.com/ClownWig/index12.html
Its where I am gonna buy my wigs. You can look around, I dont know if they have blue, but the white ones would be able to be dyed pretty easily. Also I figure after the con you have to take really good care of your wigs and make sure they don't get tangled and what not, and I have younger (like really younger) siblings who are having me do their wigs for them and they are paying for them so if they dont take care of them they arn't out a lot of money.
So, yeah, thats just my opinion, ^__^

You know, I gotta tell you that if you catch those whole sale orders or go to amphigory, their prices are actually really good. I've bought cheap wigs before, and the difference in the quality of the fiber and the thickness is pretty substantial. You know, the funny thing is that I only paid like $10 more for the good wig anyways...

If you have a cheap wig or two that's all you'd really need (a longer one and a shorter one that you can try your styles on). And if you're really worried about cutting it you can always take it to your hair stylist. It is nice to have a cheaper one for experimenting with new products though.

You can always find a lot of good wigs on ebay.... ecspecially long or coloful ones ... here are two stores that I frequent....

hrmm.. that first store looked like their wigs were the cheap modacrylic type, the second looked like the fibers were better but they weren't as full. I can understand why some of you prefer the cheaper alternatives, but they just don't look or feel as good as the quality wigs. You also notice a difference in comfort, how long they last, how easily they tangle and how easy they are to style. (not to mention how they look in photos... those cheap ones give off a very unnatural "glare")

You always get what you pay for when it comes to wigs. So while I may pay another $10 for my wig(s) I feel it's well worth it when you take all of that into consideration. I can't help but feel that I'm "throwing away" my money when I spend it on a wig that I know I won't be as happy with and won't work as well anyways...

Yeah, I know I'm picky, but the end result is worth it. ;)

Danger!  Danger, Will Robinson!

Synthetic wigs do /not/ take hair dye well.  At all.  You'd do better to just buy a blue wig in the first place.  See, hair is made up of dead organic cells, which dye nicely.  However, wigs are made of plastic.  Soak an old yogurt cup or a bath toy in hair dye and it'll come out pale and blotchy--the same goes for your wig.

There /are/ specialty dyes for wigs (they sell some at Katie Bair, for example) but they're expensive and annoying to use.  So unless you really, really want a custom color, I'd say to just buy yourself a blue wig.  Save yourself time, money, and a lot of frustration.
