First anime that you KNEW was anime
« on: September 21, 2008, 08:39:18 pm »
Let's see if I can word this easier here-

We all know now what animes we watched as youngins' but what was the first anime you watched and realized something was up, or even knew what it was finally?

For me it was Tenchi Muyo on Toonami but the first anime I ever watched was Robotech or Speed Racer.

So what about you?

It depresses me to say that my first anime in this sense was InuYasha. *sigh*

The Oh! My Goddess OVA's. I remember I cried really hard at the end of it and my mom thought that something was wrong with me.

I think Pokemon, thought I didn't know when I first watched it; it was when I got back from Israel that I found out.

I think when I was 9 or 10 I saw Vampire Hunter D on VHS for the first time.  It was a pretty big deal.

(As a slight aside -- anyone remember how weak the anime section was at Suncoast? It was literally a single rack, like the kind they'd devote to spaghetti westerns or something.  I can still remember paying $29.95 for 2 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion on VHS.  *shudder*)

I am pretty sure it was 'Ghost in the Shell' the movie.  A friend of mine, I don't remember who now, told me that I aught to watch this anime movie, it was really cool.  I remember watching GITS and thinking WTF, this is messed up.  Just about ruined all future anime for me.  Luckily, my daughter got into anime pretty heavily and I discovered Emerald City Comics the local anime and comic outlet, as well as the U of O anime club TUNAC.  I ended up giving anime another try.  Now I probably have one of the largest collections in Eugene.  Ironically I have GITS as part of it.  I wont recommend it as the first movie for newbies.  Nor will I recommend Akira, or Princess Mononoke.  Most newbies find these films, wierd.

Princess Mononoke was the film that made my parents give respect to anime- up until that point they saw Sailor Moon, Speed Racer, DBZ and the like, when they saw that movie their perspective on anime changed completely.

My first was way back in the day, I was four years old watching Nickelodeon, during Nick Jr. There were a couple shows I watched back then that were anime, one of which I remember was called The Littl' Bits. The other I remember but can't find the name of anywhere, but I thought it involved a bee hive and was very vintage anime in style (and was NOT Maya the Bee, that is something else).

^ As everyone, that was definitely a big part in my anime development too. If I didn't remember watching Nick Jr all the time, those would probably be my firsts also.

Well, the first anime show I saw that I was all wtf was Samurai Pizza Cats, which I later found out was because as they dubbed the show, then didn't bother to translate... Oh, and I watched Pokemon, when it first came out. The first anime movie I saw that I can remember would be Ghost in the Shell on some movie channel, which I don't get anymore. It was one of those movie channels that rarely in the middle of the night would show anime. lol

Some of my first encounters in anime was on the Sci-Fi channel back in the '90's. They didn't have the Saturday anime or something; it was called the Annual Vestival of Anime. It showed for 1 or 2 weeks in August.

Aside from those, Getter Robo Z was my first EVER anime. I never watched toonami or cartoon network and stuff, so I've never seen the chopped up popular anime they showed either.
Yeah, I'd have to say I know about as much about anime as Tofu does.

you know I find it funny I really never thought of that as anime. I remember buying one of those valentine pack things for school but I don't think I'd ever have seen the series then. now I know all about.

Groove Adventure Rave aka Rave Master the whole series is available for download as a torrent.  Don't know if either of you do torrents or not.   Warning it is 7.44 Gigs in size, so it will take awhile to download it all.

Hope this helps you.

Actually it was a link to a torrent search engine that locates torrent servers that have the show you ask for.  Technically it wasn't a torrent server or a torrent link.  But hey,  If the mods are worried about links, torrents, and licensing issues, then I'm OK with it being pulled, and I won't post anymore.

It was either Outlaw Star, Neon Genesis Evangelion, or Ranma 1/2. Probably Ranma, since I think it's the oldest. I grew up with anime since my sister liked it. She's seven eyars older then me. Funny thing is... the outlaw star ending was almost a childhood lullaby, by I was so young when I watched it, I had no idea what it came from until last summer, when I discovered it. XD

For me it was the Robotech VHS tapes I kept renting from Blockbuster at the age of ten or so.  The story was amazing even if I didn't understand the whole thing and I became very emotionally invested in the characters so much so that I ran to my parents crying when my favorite character died.  It was the first time I had seen a character died in what I thought of as a cartoon, and it really established the difference between anime and regular cartoons in my mind.  So much so that I avoided anime for a few years (8+ in fact) because of the emotional shock Robotech had caused.  The next anime I actually sat down to watch was Trigun, and I loved it.  I've been stuck on anime ever since.

Well, the first anime show I saw that I was all wtf was Samurai Pizza Cats

Omg!!  I FREAKIN loved that show and would watch it in the morning everyday before school!! I now own the only official dvd wich contains five random episodes. Even though that was the first anime i'd ever watched the first anime i knew was anime had to be Robotech on Cartoon Networks Midnight Run. Other early Animes include CardCaptors and SailorMoon.

I suspected something was different about some of my earlier shows just because of the art style. Sailor Moon especially, because I'd never seen a cartoon that featured exclusively young female heroes before (the whole "fighting with the power of love" thing was probably another major tipoff.) I didn't actually know the stuff was called anime for a few years, until a friend of mine invited me to come to the club at my high school. They were showing Trigun, and it kind of clicked: "Oh, so that's what all those wierd cartoons I've been watching are called? And they come from Japan?"

Then they showed Grave of the Fireflies. I think that's what sold me. The movie made me (and our male teacher advisor) cry, but it also made me realize the variety available.

If you don't cry at Grave of the Fireflies, there's something wrong with you. Most depressing children's movie ever. But so good! Everyone should watch it at least once, once they're old enough to handle it.

Just, you know, watch My Neighbor Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service immediately afterward. Something perky. Slightly less gut wrenching that way.

Grave of the Fireflies is considered a kids movie? yeesh...

I believe so...My Neighbor Totoro was paired with it when it was first released in theaters because the studio believed that no one would see Totoro on its own. Hotaru no Haka was a novel first--partly based on the author's own experiences as a child--so that may have been why they expected it to be the bigger success. The fact that they'd pair the two at all for a double-billing suggests it was being marketed at the same audience.

Melancholy and even sad endings, character deaths and the like are more prevalant in anime than western animation, even in stuff aimed at children. All the reading I've ever done on the culture talks about the Japanese stress on the briefness of all things material: life is at its most beautiful when you realize the transience of it (check out poetry on cherry blossoms or autumn leaves). It's a more natural way of looking at things, I suppose...death is accepted as part of life, rather than danced around or hidden as it tends to be in the west. It's one of the things I found appealing about anime: it's much more up front, more respectful of my intelligence, because once you hit a certain age you know anyone can die. (No infant immortality in real life, and I do like my fantasy to maintain a certain level of realism regardless of how many catgirls and giant mechs are in it.)

Not that any of that makes Grave of the Fireflies any less depressing. Though actually, rewatching it years later...since I knew what to expect going in, I was able to watch it more critically (and I was doing a paper for a class, so I kinda had to. ^^') It's still a sad movie, and Seita and Setsuko's story is still tragic, but the eventual outcome for them is that they're together again, and nothing can hurt them. There's the possibility they'll be reborn into a better life. Melancholy again. Beautiful and sad, and just a bit uplifting, strange as that sounds.
(By the way, if you're looking for a movie that pairs well with Grave of the Fireflies, I'd recommend Akira Kurosawa's "Rhapsody in August". Yes, live action. If only for the oddness of watching Richard Gere deliver lines in Japanese. More upbeat than Hotaru no Haka--which is to say, not unbearably sad 90% of the time--but still deals with the ramifications of war from a citizen's point of view.)

but no matter how you look at it you have to say it is a beautiful movie, I mean even Roger Ebert called it "one of the most powerful anti-war movies ever made" and that has to stand for something.

Now I may be de-railing my own topic here but all this talk of downer anime made me remember something- during the AMV contest there was one anime where a girl was riding her bike down a hill and the brakes failed causing her to end up dying by train. What was that and is it out in the States yet?

Oh, absolutely. A prime example of how powerful animation can be.

That sounds kind of messed up. Not the anime itself so much...the variety of the medium is rather astounding...but the fact that someone would use that clip in a music video for a contest. Unless it's not really a spoiler for that particular series? If it's in the first couple episodes or it's kind of an "everybody knows due to osmosis" (Aeris spoiler), or the series is old (might get some of the kids interested), I could see using it.

My theory is that it is particularly good video editing- who knows she could have lived and the scene at the end is just the BIKE getting destroyed but needless to say this is all conjecture till I can see the show.

Ah, now that's the mark of a good AMV. I remember a particular Whisper of the Heart video I saw that made me say, "Okay, now I really have to see that movie." And now it's one of my favorite Ghibli films.
The best AMVs act as a trailer for the series. One of my friends said it, and she's absolutely right.

And now we really are off topic. So, um, first anime! Must have been The Littl' Bits on Nickelodeon, back when I was about nine or ten and we first got cable. Didn't know it was for years.
Still kind of off-topic, but less so than the other stuff.
