Please post here if you are interested in helping with security for the 2005 convention. We need a lot more people as security staff.
You can also e-mail myself or Brownie.

Waffles, my impression is that yes, that would be a problem. However, I'll be happy to double check for you.

Thanks for the support Candel. I figured I could put you down for say, 66 out of the 72 hours eh?

(note, most people won't be asked to volunteer that much, just candel, so don't be afraid to post because of it, hopefully everyone will be forced to take enough time to themselves to have a goodnights sleep this year. =P)

I dont mind being pinned down in one spot for small amounts of time but I love to roam :)

age restrictions
« Reply #5 on: October 17, 2004, 04:14:50 pm »
Waffles, unfortunately the age restriction for security whether volunteers or staff is 18 for the 2005 convention. THanks for the interest though,

Kylite, great, we'll put you on the list. Were you dressed up last year as anything? I'm trying to remember a face to put with the tag.

She probably made an exception since you helped out last year, that would be my guess too. As a general rule however, 18 will be required. Waffles, I dont want to discourage you. You're still more then welcome to help out with lots of other areas of the con I'm sure. =)

Daystar and Kylite, I'll try to get you added to the operations list for security if you're not already on it.

If they're 18 by the time of the convention it's okay for them to be on security staff is my understanding.  If not, lots of other parts of Kumori Con need volonteers, and they usually accept at an age of 16.
No, I'm not insane.  I'm just... happy.

So hwo all do we have on list for security
Id like to have an idea of what events we will have to cover and how many people to each area.  I loved being the floating security.  and although I know it needs to be done, I hated counting people in the dealer room LOL.

I could do security detail for awhile each day. I'd like to enjoy the con, too. So, I could probably do at least a couple hours daily.

Or I could be "On call", as needed or something.

I'm a pretty big guy, so if you guys like need to scare someone away, I can do that without even opening my mouth. :D

clarification... last year was an eception... they didnt realize i was 17. im going to be 18 by next kumoricon so dont worry about me. Waffles, if your in the area you should come to a general meeting and volunteer to help. they love volunteers. (also i told brownie i was willing to be her assitant and stuff so im sure im on the list already, but if i cant be brownies assistant i will happily do anything else. =^-^=)

The short answer to Kyuubi's question is: sorry, but no.

Here's the deal: You CAN be Operations staff if you are 16 or 17 (Operations being the department that oversees what you think of as "security"), and help out in the behind-the-scenes things of con a lot, but you CAN'T be assigned to shifts that serve a "security" type function unless you are at least 18 years old.

If you are 18, you're eligible for such shifts/responsibilities within Operations, but it's the Director's call who is appointed to such duties. Talk to Bronwyn Williams, our Director of Operations. Email me if you don't know how to get in contact with her.

If you know what you want to do at con (example: if you are like "I 100% do not want to miss the Cosplay!") just let us know about it and we won't schedule you for that time. You just have to talk to us up front about what you want and need. We're not looking to overwork you or spoil your con experience. We love our volunteers. :D

Also, as a volunteer, you're still eligible to participate in all the events. Only full staff members have to be judged differently from regular attendees in the contests such as cosplay, karaoke, etc.

The best way to start is to e-mail volunteer@kumoricon.org

From there it'll probably take a week or so to figure out what you want to do/have skillz for, and then what positions are looking for people.

I volunteer with every fiber of my being.  If I can get the time off.  A friend and I attended last year and were last minute volunteers.  You might remember us, we were the guys who payed for a room but DID NOT USE IT!!! We volunteered for night security in the game room both nights.  So much fun that I have to do it again.  If I can get the time off.  I'm praying here, so pray with me.

IT'S NOT SECURITY!
« Reply #29 on: June 23, 2005, 08:42:28 pm »
It's not security. It can't legally be called security. The official title is 'yojimbo'. And as far as I know, there will be no last minute volunteer 'yojimbo', just previously arranged staff. If you want in on it, better arrange properly before hand, don't just show up at the con ready to throw down.

You can volunteer at the con to do things that don't fall into the category of yojimbo (what most people think of as 'security'). That's set up, take down, running, judging contests, etc. If you are planning on going to the general meeting in July, definitely let the gaming director know at the meeting. It helps us immensely to have the volunteers who want to commit signed up in advance.

We'll also be posting a list in this forum soon of directors who need volunteers and how to contact them to sign up to help.
