Aww....New Year's...? That sucks. I would have liked to go. My mom probably wants me to stay home for the family, seeing as she doesn't fully support it....

At $2 a bottle?  If you go to kumoricon for $30 or $40 but can't spare $2 for some Sparkling Cider once a year, something's wrong.  I buy 3 bottles of Sparkling Cider and 4 2-liters of Soda before each con.

Why have money and not spend it?  ;) Actually I just think if you have money to spend you should, because being TOO cheap makes you miserable. I'd know. XD

Anyway, I registered, and I am so excited about this because personally I hate New Years, because we all just sit in front a of a TV and watch the ball drop while I'm half asleep. :/ It'll be awesome, and I hope I can go!

So, I looked at a calendar, and here's the scoop:

2008/09 - Dec 31 Wednesday, Jan 1 Thursday
Weekend is December 26-28
I recommend the 30th-1st.
2009/10 - Dec 31 Thursday, Jan 1 Friday
Weekend is December 25-27
I recommend the 31st-2nd
2010/11 - Dec 31 Friday, Jan 1 Saturday
Weekend is December 24-26 or 31-January 2
No-brainer
2011/12 - Dec 31 Saturday, Jan 1 Sunday
Weekend is December 30-January 1
No-brainer
2012/13 - Dec 31 Monday, Jan 1 Tuesday
Leapyears are pretty lol

That's five years of Mew.

nice but I think we should consider doing it during the weekend also..

Having it on the weekend would be a big problem for next year.  It would either be the day after Christmas, or a few days after the new year.

'09/'10 would work from the 1st to 3rd of January, as a bringing in the New Year celebration, but I think it would be ballin' to have a somewhat more specific (guests, staff, and SO's only or something) New Years Midnight Celebration that year too, then we could all wake up with Sparkling Cider Hangovers and start getting ready lol.

So what exactly would MEW be? I get that it's a con... but that only goes so far. Hell just an excuse to blow a weekend is fine by me, but I'd like to have a general idea :)

Well, it's a two-day con, around New Years. The name, MEW, stands for Manga and Exotic Worlds, and basically it includes manga, anime, sci-fi, and fantasy.

Why not go to the site and read about it?  :P

I think that the what of MEWCon will probably be coming together over the next few months, then solidifying after the first few actual conventions occur.

Also, because New Years is often associated with drinking, I have a feeling there would be a 21+ bar and lounge in addition to a general convention space open to all ages.  It would be mandatory that all alcohol be kept within the 21+ area and proper licensing would need to be acquired.

tight security is needed... ANY VOLUNTEERS?~
because if the alcohol gets out of the designated area, the con is totally screwed.

Depending on the venue, it's largely possible that a pre-established 21+ area would be present.  Many hotels and party spaces include bars and adult lounges.  Such areas typically only have one entrance/exit accessable to guests, so there would only need to be two or three people at the door.

Also, chances are, LOTS of people will do most of their drinking either in their rooms or at nearby bars and taverns.

Have you chosen a building yet? Or need any suggestions?

Aah, cool cool. Is that inside Ondine, or another building entirely? I can't remember. But I have heard good things. ^_^

Ooh, yeah. Well that's awesome. That's a really great program and building from what I've gathered. I was almost going to move in there myself before I decided on Broadway.

It is a lovely campus. It's great because it is situated in the heart of downtown Portland. Thus it has a great environment for education, great buildings, several blocks of pure park in the middle of it (called the Park Blocks). Sometimes the classes can get old, but that is how school goes, right? Just being on campus can be relaxing though, chilling in the Park Blocks reading, writing, drawing, doing your thing, heh.

Yeah, it is only about six Max stops and seven blocks from the hotel Kumoricon will be in this year (sounds like a lot but it is not very far at all), heh

And then of course it's where Kcon Lite is! lol

Yeah, it is pretty awesome. I heard a while back that someone was pushing to do away with the fareless square though. It'd be pure evil to take it away, but I haven't heard anything else about it, so I hope it just died out.

I think it was Trimet who wanted to push a fee for using the MAX lines in Fareless square after 7 PM to "reduce crime" but a lot of people were against it so they dropped it

Ah, I can understand their reasoning for it then, but I can also understand the frustration over it. It's good that they decided to deploy more police patrols for the Max trains now, though, instead of adding that fee. Seems like a better idea.
