What are you reading?
« on: February 19, 2008, 07:16:23 am »
A new thread for an older topic. I saw there already was a "what are you reading?" post, but the forums advised me not to reply to it, because it was old, so I started a new one! Yay newness. So yes, what are we all reading these days?

As for me, I'm currently enthralled by the following:
Death Note
The Road to Madness: The Works of H.P. Lovecraft

I'm not reading any manga, but I just finished reading a few graphic novels.

But currently~

"Watchmen" written by Alan Moore, illustrated by Dave Gibbons- and they're making it into a movie! http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com/

Also The Te of Piglet and I'm trudging through the Book of 5 Rings (The Art of War was much easier to read...)

I've recently read Welcome to the NHK. This novel inspired both the manga and anime; I would read it if you've are familiar with the series. Also if you have ever been to maddox's website the Alphabet of Manliness is an awesome book to read.

How'd you like Othello? I actually enjoyed it, one of the better Tragedies I'd read. Though I have to say my top favorite Shakespearean tragedy is Titus Andronicus. *thumbs up*

It was good, didn't expect the ending...and it was...well, tragic, haha.

Was Midsummer Night's Dream the only happy ending one?

No, there are plenty, most of the comedies end on good notes like that. Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, Measure for Measure, they are all comedies, though Midsummer Night's Dream is probably the MOST comedic out of all that Shakespeare has written. It is so filled with jokes, punnery, double entendre and silly mishaps that it is pretty muc hthe essence of comedy, whereas most of his other comedies still have some aspects of tragedy in them.

Now after Othello, you have to read King Lear. But if you want to see a movie that really follows the play excellently, watch the one with Laurence Fishburne, and whatshisnut....It sometimes helps to see what they were doing, it helped me. Having been a sailor, it drove me nuts the command structure and who is in charge questoin Shakespeare was asking in the play.

I had a cat named Iago when I was little. He was paisley.

OMG!  I just finished volume seven of Kaoru Mori's Emma! It was a thrilling conclusion to a truly lovely romance manga.  One of the best I've read.  Now I'm going to track down some of the other short manga she wrote following some of the minor characters in the Emmaverse.

hrm well I'm working on finishing that last Kovac's novel Woken Furies. It's very good and does not disappoint. I'm also reading angel sanctuary vol. 1 and I just finished the most recent Scott Westerfeld book Extras (my guilty pleasure X3 it's "teen reading" but captivating nonetheless SW is a god) I've been thinking about giving Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrell another go (I couldn't read it the first time because it seemed horrendously boring, but maybe I didn't read far enough, most of the best books I've read started out slow and drew you in as they went such as The Chrestomanci books and generally anything written by Diana Wynne Jones) as well as finally finishing Black Sun rising which I took to reading during my breaks at DQ. Feh.

...

.......

I freaking LOVE books.

David Drake's Northworld, a couple of books co-written by John Ringo and Travis oh good grief what'is name? Whatever the guy is a ninja redneck rocket scientist, so he knows science. What is weird is the subtle references to certain anime Gundam and Dragonball to list a couple. I am guess those are what they refer to, as they do not list specifc examples, could be Robotech for all I know. Anyway, it's still cool to know that redneck rocket scientists know about anime.

I'm reading the latest Appleseed manga from Dark Horse, copyright 2008. dunno, but this seems to me to be about 20 years old, as I think I remember the first Appleseed movie running like this. hmmmmm.
I've been reading C.J. Cherryh, and Elizabeth Moon. Moon's The Speed of Dark was good. I can see why it won the Nebula award.

It's called The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde and it's a romantic comedy. Yes, it's a play, but still, you should read it if you're into classical wit and sarcasm. Also, it has a lot of puns.
I just finished it like, 30 minutes ago. It blew my friggin' mind xD

I'm reading the Trinity Blood manga... Again...

The Vampire Hunter D novels. I have been waiting for them to translate the novels since I was 14. I'm on #5 now.

Naruto, Bleach, & FMA manga. All online.

Let The Galaxy Burn. A book of short stories based on the warhammer 40K universe. I have been trying to finish this book for about 10 months now. It's been hard when you have been trying to look for a job.

Thank you Jeff T Moderator for unlocking this thread.

I am reading "One Day on Mars" by Travis Taylor. Published by Baen books. I am posting about it, as Taylor has mecha in this novel. He seems to believe that they will be a viable military weapon in the future. THis is not a book about mecha, but they are an instrument of war, and so are in the book.

The book is also a bit more hard science fiction that pure space opera. But if you like action, he has been writing with John Ringo on a series, so has been able to bring what he has learned there, to his solo novels.

I can't say yet I recommend reading this book. I am having a harder time reading it than I had reading his other novels. Bu tit is nice to read sci-fi, that is not all gloom and doom.

I was kind of hoping this thread would come back. :'D

As for manga, I'm rereading 20th Century Boys and getting into Urasawa's other works for the first time (namely Pluto and Monster). What great stories...

And The Other Side of the River by Alex Kotlowitz is my current left-to-right novel. It's a book for English class, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

And.... THE AMULET OF SAMARKAND

I've been reading that book for a while, few years, lol. I like it, but I keep having to put it off for schoolbooks and texts and whatnot.

But, here are some of what I am currently reading:
- Watchmen by Alan Moore
- The Truly Disadvantaged by William Wilson
- The Norton Anthology of English Literature: The Victorian Age
- Stone of Tears by Terry Goodkind
- In the Days of Simon Stern by Arthur A. Cohen

I am reading 1635: The Dreeson Incident. It's an alternative history, part of the 1632 universe created by Eric Flint. I had never learned so much about this period of history until I started reading this series. It's really neat, to me. And I wonder what would life be like now, if I even existed now, if someone went back in time and made massive changes to the world. Besides that we would have been on the moon by 1776, at the latest. And what other eras could someone do affect the future? I think there are times that no matter how advanced the people going back in time were, that they could not change the future much, because of how backwards the time they went was, or that they would all be killed for witches or something.

Finished reading A Desert Called Peace by Tom Kratman. He has some what would be called radical ideas on how to solve our terrorism problem. Mainly by acting like those self-same terrorists. Is it the religion he hates, or just the adherents? Dunno.

Just started Elric Saga by Michael Moorcock. I hadn't ever read it before, not sure why, maybe I just didn't like the idea I got from the covers, or that it was supposed to be too fru-fru. Or, I am just not that into fantasy fiction. It's slow going to start, kind of like reading a Masterpiece Theatre production. or something...

Manga wise I'm reading Gin Tama, it's entertaining, but I'm not a huge fan of it, I think I have to read more before I can say anything more though.

Okay, I really don't want to read any more of the Elric Saga. It just isn't what I care about. It's written in a much older style than it was published. I am talking 1909, when E.R.R. Eddison had The Worm Ouroboros published, which I really liked a lot. I hope you can someday read it.

@ MiriaRose, you oughta read Slaughterhouse 5 next then. Should only take you about a day. Main character time travels. It's written by Kurt Vonegut jr.

This diabetes is making it hard to read, my eyesight had already gone downhill, before I knew.

But I am trying, sort of, to read Dragonseye, byt Anne and Todd McCaffery. It's second pass stuff, and I am not so sure I am thrilled to read it, and I like 9th pass better. But... we shall see.

@ MiriaRose, I'm curious as to what grade you are in, as we read Animal Farm in I want to say 9th grade. Also on that list was Lord of the Flies, and A Clockwork Orange, and 1984. I guess we had a teacher who needed to disturb us. lol That and she had a poster in her office that read, a woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle. Man, that depressed me.

I think so...

..and war is fun killing with free meals from dead soldiers.  Yummy yummy humans.

Seriously though, the depressing stuff is why you had to read it, to become more familiar with the dehumanization of war.  That's one of the things that the author was trying to convey with the novel.

Hey Jay, Can you bring FB #22 with you next Anime Friday?  I am just starting #21.

I am just curious.  Has anyone here read The Belgariad by David Eddings?  It is a five book fantasy quest saga.  The first book is entitled Pawn of Prophecy.  This is probably my all time favorite series of all time.  For those of you who mentioned Shannara and Chrestomanci Quintet, look into The Belgariad.  I can guarantee, you will be glad you did.

I need to look in lik ePowells rare book room to see if I can score a bound copy of the Worm Ouroboros, by E.R. Eddison. wait...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Worm_Ouroboros Man, I love that book. Wish I knew where, must be my dad's copy I read.

Amazing how some fiction writers had such modern language skills, and others just...not. Stoker yes, Wells, no. Verne yes. Doyle no. Burroughs no. And then we get to the ones you study in college, Joyce, um yes/no/maybe. lol

I always like to throw in some non-fiction / history.

Just finishing up a STUNNING read calle 'The Demon Under the Microscope,' by Thomas Hager.
It's about the research trials and errors that brought about sulfa drugs - the first effective antibiotics.
Harrowing reading at times, wartime infections, Nazi experiments on Polish prisoners, introduction in the USA before and FDA laws had any sort of teeth to them, dangerous copycat recipies, etc.

I am trying to remember if you said you had read the Chanur Saga books by Cherryh.  Jay, you really should look into them if you like her style of writing.  I have always loved how she shows the human race from the aliens perspective.  And no other "cat-girl" I have ever read about or seen in an anime, can hold a candle to Pyanfar Chanur.  I just love this character.  Kind of like the feline equivalent of Kylara Vatta from Elizabeth Moons Vatta's War series, another great series of books I would recommend to anyone who likes space operas (Think Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, or Star Trek).

Funny, i didn't know you had posted that about Chanur, and huh, I just read the first 3 books of the series the past couple days. Of course neither the library of Borders has homecoming or legacy. I wonder if Cherryh has any time to write another Chanur novel, tie it in more with some part of the rest of her universe, maybe say the Atevi in the Foreigner universe! That'd be awesome.

Did you read the new book Conspirator? It just came out.

I also read David Drake's new Leary/Mundy novel, In the Stormy Red Sky. I like how it may seem all Patrick O'Brien, but Drake uses actual historical events albeit a couple thousand years old, but true nonetheless, to use as a base for this fiction.

I read Chibi Vampire #13. I am going to probably really miss the series after #14 comes out and there will be no more.

I just found out that David Eddings died this month.  RIP David, I will miss you.   :'(

If you like Chobits you should also check out Kobato.  You will see some old friends.   ;D

The anime of Kobato has just started airing, it is following the manga rather loosely so far.  At least it isn't totally different.  Hard to say with only one episode out so far.

I'm reading "The Subtle Knife", by Philip Pullman. I'm surprised at how enjoyable it is to read. I do wonder about his take on religion. I doubt that religious fundamentalists would allow their children to read his works. But... I have only seen the first movie, and only started reading the second book, so I cannot claim to know what he is all about. The anti-C.S. Lewis???

Well I was reading the book but now I just got lazy and am now listening to Leanard Nimoy read a star trek novel. It makes the adventure come alive! :)

S.M. Stirling The Sword of the Lady. Just finished a couple by Lois McMaster Bujold, about Miles Vorkosigan. And before that a whole series of Jack Campbell novels. And the new one by Travis S. Taylor, and also Larry Niven's latest. I gave the Niven to my dad for Christmas.
Have Fun
