Kumoricon '08 Gaming Tournament Discussion
« on: February 04, 2008, 11:27:05 am »
Hello!
I just thought I'd be active and start a thread for discussion of whats going to be at Kcon this year.
Lets just throw out what I have so far.

Super Smash Bros Brawl
Soul Calibur 4
Guilty Gear XX : Accent Core Plus
Mario Kart Wii
Rock Band 4v4
Guitar Hero 3
DDR / Stepmania (Mix TBD by DancingTofu)
Halo 3
Tetris Attack
Tetris DS (or another DS game)
Pokemon (in conjunction with the Pokemon panel)

Possibles:
King of Fighters '98 - GK or not, I'll def MAME that ****. RESPECT.
Naruto: Rise of a Ninja /  Naruto Shippuuden Gekitou Ninja Taisen EX2 (?)
Final Fantasy Tactics (we could always duel on Tactics Ogre PSX!!!)
Melty Blood Act Cadenza ver B... (OR AA??!?)

PC is indefinite at the moment, but I'd like to see TF2 and DOTA tourneys, there was not a whole lot happening last year, but people had fun.

Please, throw out your suggestions... We will have a much more complete schedule this year around.

-Singles?
-Doubles?
BeatMania/IIDX
-Singles? (what mix(es)?)
GH/FOF
Rock Band
GF/DM? (if available)
-Jam Tourney?
Pop'n Music?

Other ideas:
PSP - FFT

MAME/PC - Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move
MAME/PC - Joust
PS2 - dance pad SC4 (CF's with center buttons activated)
MAME/PC/PS2/Atari 2600 - Warlords
MAME/PC - King of Fighters (GK has a cab with '98 on it; we should discuss this with them.)
Video Game Scrabble (instead of words, use video game terms [charaters, titles, etc].  players must be able to give evidence that any term they use is relevant to a video game.  english 2- and 3-letter words would be fair game.)

Actually, we should talk to Gosha and Pantsu about Pop'N; they both have really good ASC's.  IIDX could be done, but the skill gaps between the people who would be playing would be hueg.

Stepmania tourneyXD
If there's a DDR tournament, this will probably be how it's done.  That or using DDR 5th Mix through MAME if there's a legal issue (I know someone with a 5th Mix ROM, so it would be 100% legal, while StepMania would be somewhat questionable).

If I'm providing the StepMania, I intend to have a contract written that will make it a fully legal application.  This is possible because:
1. Kumoricon is technically a private (member-only) event, not an event where one purchases admission, so StepMania is perfectly viable as long as the bylaws are still phrased in a manner that specifies that registration is for Altonimbus membership, not for Kumoricon admission.
2. It would be on free play

If we're getting computers from BackSpace, I'd would love a Team Fortress 2 Tournament.

Another cool thing would be an idea I'm jacking from PAX last year was their awesome Handheld tournament.  It was pretty cool.  Get some buttons or something, then challange for a button on any random game, rules set between the two people first.  Man, it was amazing thing to do while waiting in lines for stuff.  I'm pretty sure it would be a popular thing to do, even for casual play.  Everybody wins! : )

Remember the movie "Hackers"? A Wipeout - Wipeout Pulse tournament would please me! Unfortunately, the fan base is guaranteed to be small T_T

I'd also prefer Mario Kart: Double Dash. Most people like the co-op thing and sharing the glory with their gunman. Of course, if you wanna bump me and my girl from the number 1 spot we've had for the last 3 or 4 years, you'll have to get the next Mario kart ~_^

Wipeout would be amazing.  Updated first post with info.  Does anyone still play Halo 3?  I also sent in the update on the gaming section of the kcon website, so we should have some stuff up there relatively soon.
Keep those ideas coming.

We can always host something small with the prize being a warm fuzzy feeling inside.  It all depends on the turnout and our prize budget.  lol.

what songs are gonna be on stepmania:O
Well, here's what I'd like to have:
-All songs from all official DDR mixes (1264 songs as of DDRSuperNOVA2 US Homeversion)
-All songs from ITG1 and ITG2, plus available songs and charts from ITG3.
-Custom songs and charts not featured on DDR made or supplied by Kumoricon attendees.

If a tournament is held on stepmania, it will use all 1264 DDR songs, plus all ITG 1 and 2 songs, sorted by mix.  Alphabetical sorting will be available for this.  The decision to use or not use Marvelous timing will be made by the people competing in each round.  I'll make an official topic for the DDR/ITG tourney once I have a more definite plan and absolute confirmation that at least two high-quality pads will be available for such a purpose (whether I build them, the con buys them, or someone else lends them).

More tournies the merrier, but if you mean "real deal" - shwag for prizes is still up in the air, but you can definitely get a time slot.

I'm not sure about Melty Blood though. Most of the people I know who'd play it aren't able to come or are going to be in Vegas. If enough people correct me than go for it though.

Once you have the tournaments finalized and set up, could you gaming staff members let me know via pm?  I may want to post extra yojimbo for certain tournaments as crowd control.

For the Brawl Tournament this year, could we possipbly get a better matching system than the cruster death that was the melee tournament last year. May i suggest a limited sign up to start and stages that dont effect gameplay.

That is actually a good idea since during tournaments the crowd gets larger and is harder to control i.e people not properly checking weapons/bags(required in the game room), or people trying to steal(although I don't believe we had much issue with that last year...)

Oh trust me, I've thought about my limitations in the room this year. I can only help with door and game check and some rounds in the room. And I'll be making Lucas be my bitch for anything I need lol. Well, I'll *try* that but it probably won't work >.>  I just hope we keep the check out system we had last year but I have a bad feeling most of it was Morgans doing, but I have amped my skills on excel this year so I could always set it up with the changes we had discussed last year to make it more organized.

Meg, what I think would work best is if we made sure the Yojimbo manager or at the least you will have a list of the tournament and there times so you know when to have extras for us. And when you may not need as many extras.

Last year it was just basic excel spreadsheets set up for who checked what in and a seperate sheet for the actual checkout method. So as long as a computer has office we're good with that. Also we had the label maker, Mark said was the cons I do believe, and that was very handy for marking every item with the name of who it belongs to. Some of my controllers and all of our games still have a sticker saying 'Saishi' on them.

Yes to the tournament, no to forcing people to use the wheel.  Have you seen that thing?  Theres never been a force on controllers, so use whatever suits your preference, as long as it doesn't use macros and the like.

I can always just bring a copy of office 97. It doesnt require registration therefore can be a pirated copy. It's what I've always used and will be reinstalling on my computer once my dad gets me another copy >.>
OpenOffice is an option if someone would rather not have pirated software however.

And as for teh white dots, they'll have to be changed for check in. Well, the dot can stay but a label would be added with your name....even memory cards get tagged.

Oh yeah! I'm assuming there will be a Mario Kart Wii tournament? If there is, will you have to use the wheel, or is a controller okay? Well, I'm sure it hasn't really been considered yet, either ^^;;;

Yes to the tournament, no to forcing people to use the wheel.  Have you seen that thing?  Theres never been a force on controllers, so use whatever suits your preference, as long as it doesn't use macros and the like.

We can always get dad's wheels in case anyone *does* want to use a wheel...

Software for the computer is not a problem.. I will make sure it has the programs.  If you need help setting up the spreadsheet, let me know.. I'm pretty familiar with Excel :)

The con owns 4 wheels, so they at least will be available to use.

The spreadsheets are pretty basic. It doesn't really even touch the actual uses of excel just the super basics of it. It's easy enough that even someone who has never used excel can manage the check in/out system.

Meg, what I think would work best is if we made sure the Yojimbo manager or at the least you will have a list of the tournament and there times so you know when to have extras for us. And when you may not need as many extras.

No worries there, as I'm Yojimbo assistant manager and do most of the question asking due to kylite's work schedule (he's the yojimbo manager).

So is this still the tourney list?

Super Smash Bros Brawl
Soul Calibur 4
Guilty Gear XX : Accent Core Plus
Mario Kart Wii
Rock Band 4v4
Guitar Hero 3
DDR / Stepmania (Mix TBD by DancingTofu)
Halo 3
Tetris Attack
Tetris DS (or another DS game)
Pokemon (in conjunction with the Pokemon panel)

I'm going to be pushing for Pocky club members to join each tournament so we can act like a kind of corporate sponsor. I've got a couple of people lined up but I want to make sure that I have the right list for everyone.

So far, yes.  Although, Halo 3 is sorta sub-par to CoD4 at this point, and prob could get axed.
But I dunno what the fps community is like, I'd rather be seeing TF2 and Dota on the PC's, and TF2 owns.

To quote the youtube video 'A Day In the Life of A Turret', Halo 3 is CoD4's b***h.  Honestly, in all reality, I'd rather play CoD4.

I just found Uniracers for $12 (a deal, if you ask me). I'd still love a tournament there. There's a lot of newer games being used for tournaments these days. I think we should have a couple classics.

Even though I don't play many myself, an old Mortal Kombat or King of Fighters game would be great tournament fodder.  Not so much Street Fighter because that game's super simple.  Hellsap knows more about fighters than me, but I know enough to know that new fighters and old fighters are entirely different.

Personally, I didn't like MK3 in either case. Hence MKII. It's like the Mariott vs. Double-Tree, you can check the preference and stats for it online, but there's no contest as to which one is better.

Well for IIDX..not sure how many serious players u have there but i would recommend beatmania IIDX 14th style...aka Gold..cause DJ Troopers is not out yet.DDR..I have all of them and the original Version's to.1,2,append 1 and 2,3,4,extra mix, 5 on ps1 and 6-extreme.. all the Jp versions.

Mame is so not legal at all in any way..if caught using mame by a industry rep..so many fines can be appied to that person..that is why most con's say nooo to Roms...even at Sakura con they can't use step mania any more cause they got in trouble for it.

Pop n Music Carnival is a great game to..alot of fun.

I'm so excited for the DDR tournament and IIDX and Pop 'n would be awesome as well if those happened.

If you have a Japanese PS2 to play those on, it would be fantastic if you could bring that and any of your games, including the DDR.  Although all the DDR will be run through StepMania, the disclaimer I'm writing into the game requires that any songs and charts used are either original or existing on legitimate copies of the games on-site.  The only reason I'm using StepMania is because the homeversions aren't consistent with each other and have slow load times.  For a serious tournament, no less than 180 songs and 500 charts will suffice.  I am getting tired of people writing off my 1st and 2nd place scores because it was a "homeversion tourney".

MAME is perfectly legal in every way.  It's only illegal if you don't own the actual ROM.  It's designed to play ROMs for machines that are out of production and/or have irreplaceable broken hardware.  If you own a ROM through firsthand purchase, you are legally entitled to use it on any system that will play it.  Likewise, if you own a piece of hardware (ie. a arcade machine) you are legally entitled to play any software that works on it.

Tournament idea: Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction Hardcore Tournament: last man standing.

8-person tournament via our LAN gaming (assuming we have it again) where each player starts with a level 1 character with their choice of class.  They can form parties and go aggro as they please, but whatever happens, the last man standing wins.

Working on the logistics of things... it seems that CoD4, although better than Halo 3, does not support split screen.  Which severely limits any chance of a team tourney.

Fighting games - I'm thinking of throwing a small KoF '98 UM side tournament.  Its an oldschool fighter, but its brand new! With updates and slight tweaks.  Its awesome.

Since the LAN is basically a separate entity, not taking up TVs, theres plenty of free time for tournaments or side-games to be ran.

Next thing to work on - DONATIONS.  I need to start a loan thread this year, to keep track of what people are planning to bring with them, with a running record of what K-con has and what people are bringing.

So what tournaments have been added to this list and what has been removed?

Super Smash Bros Brawl
Soul Calibur 4
Guilty Gear XX : Accent Core Plus
Mario Kart Wii
Rock Band 4v4
Guitar Hero 3
DDR / Stepmania (Mix TBD by DancingTofu)
Halo 3
Tetris Attack
Tetris DS (or another DS game)
Pokemon (in conjunction with the Pokemon panel)

Anything different? I've seen people talking about other events but what's official?

Rock Band will be a Judged Battle of the Bands; it's as much a performance tournament as a gaming tournament, and I feel that it should be noted as such.

Guitar Hero will have a Hard Division and an Expert Division; it doesn't need to be noted but could be.

I have a complete songlist for DDR of 300+ songs available on request.  If more versions become available to us, I can add songs to that, but the "Mix TBD by DancingTofu" is probably outdated.

Also, the DDR will run 2-3 1v1 tournaments as well as a team tournament.  Due to the nonexistence of formal teams, I could use as much help as possible to spread the word about the the team tournament so that people will ask me about it and start making teams well before the con.  If you could note that in some way, it would be appreciated.

Depending on the ruleset, I might go for the Halo 3 tournament too.  I've been playing some Halo 2 lately and it's taken me 2 sessions of playing for about an hour each time to get to the point where I'm almost matching kills with a guy who plays every day for a few hours.  If I have time to play any games between now and the con, Halo2/3 will be one of them fo' sho'.

Personally, I would like Mario Kart: Double Dash back instead of Wii. Double Dash takes more skill, it has teams. I play the Wii version a lot simply for the tournament, and I can fall back to 12th in a single second, then come back to 1st in half a lap; too random for a tourney.

I would so be in the double dash tournament with a friend of mine. We tried last year but the random selection gave us crap character and we lost. We were so used to playing small. If there is double dash we will practice with all three weight classes and become really good with all three mwahahahahhahaha >:D

Heh. And I just got through unlocking everything, including all Expert staff ghosts and stars in all 150cc Mirror tournaments.
Also, random character selection in ANY tournament also takes away from what people practice and get skilled at.

Random selection does seem like a good way of messing some things up, especially in Mario Kart, where the characters are actually balanced.  In SC2; it made sense, because otherwise everyone would use Yoshimitsu, Astaroth, Nightmare, or Raphael and it would be BORING AS HELL.

OK, I took a look at the schedule and the Pokemon tournament is on there.

That's REALLY funny considering I'm the one trying to organize it and absolutely none of this was cleared with me.

Or was there another one planned and I opened a whole thread and went on about starting one and no one told me about the existance of another?

DDR/StepMania will likely be ITG3 (the unreleased arcade beta) + all of DDR 3rd-SN2 instead.  I have mah resources. :D

ITG2 is basically just StepMania, but I think I could get more serious players to come to an ITG2 tournament.

DDR/ITG2 works fine for the listing.

But yeah; all DDR will be run through ITG, which is owned by Konami and considered an extension of DDR so if anyone cares they shouldn't.

Random selection does seem like a good way of messing some things up, especially in Mario Kart, where the characters are actually balanced.  In SC2; it made sense, because otherwise everyone would use Yoshimitsu, Astaroth, Nightmare, or Raphael and it would be BORING AS HELL.

Ironcalves of doom?  More like ironcalves of has-been.  Show me a new AA and I'll show you an ironcalf.

Can someone answer my question? I'd like an answer before the meeting tomorrow.

Yes, you opened a whole new thread on a subject that was completely confirmed in the first post of this thread.  And someone else is running them.

It was presented as a "panel" though as opposed to a meetup/tournament.

Under the tournament lists...

Pokemon (in conjunction with the Pokemon panel)
^ In fact, it was clearly stated as a tournament, in conjunction with the panel that was happening.  Sorta as a segue into it.

Might be able to get some good DDR players with the KoF :D (I know at least 3 of the good local DDR players, BBH, Zeppy, and Schlagwerk, are big KoF '98 players)

Are those three gonna be entering the KOF tournament? Are they gonna cosplay as any of the characters? I'll be going as Iori Yagami.

Last I heard, none of them were coming; BBH might but Schlagwerk is heading up to PAX for Sat/Sun and Zeppy's skipping out.  I doubt any of them would cosplay; they're all 6'2-6'4" and really scrawny. :P  BBH likes posing as his character when he wins though. . .
