Apples to Apples: KumoriCon Edition
« on: February 04, 2008, 12:39:09 am »
Have any of you played Apples to Apples? We played a few rounds of it at the last post-staff-meeting party at Jamiche's place, and it was quite a lot of fun. As I like to describe it, Apples to Apples doesn't just give you inside jokes, it gets the players to create their own inside jokes. ^^

However, I thought it would be even funnier for us if there were a "convention edition" made specifically for us con-goers. With that in mind, I started compiling a list of card ideas, getting as many suggestions from people at the party as I could muster. The game uses hundreds of cards, though, so there's PLENTY of room for more suggestions. Anything and everything goes, so please, drop an idea!

For those of you who haven't played Apples to Apples:

Apples to Apples isn't really a board game, since there's no board. It isn't a card game, since there are no real gameplay mechanics to the cards. And it's not a trivia game, because you don't answer questions. It's still competitive, though, since you can keep score and win. Overall, I'd describe it as a "social game."

There are two types of cards: red cards and green cards.  The green cards are each labeled with an adjective.  Red cards are the ones you draw into your hand, and they contain a huge variety of words and phrases: people, places, objects, events, concepts, activities, and just about anything that could have an adjective attached to it. Everything from World War II to Beanie Babies is known to be in the game.

During each round, one person acts as judge, and draws a green card face-up on the table. Everybody else takes a look at the adjective on that green card, and chooses a red card from their hand and places it face-down on the table. From there, the judge looks through the red cards and picks a favorite (without knowing who played each card). Usually, you are going for the most "appropriate" match, but the judge can choose whatever they please. The winner gets that card. The first person to collect a certain predetermined number of green cards is the winner of the game. :)

GUIDELINES FOR CARD SUGGESTIONS:

1. Please read the list first and try your best not to make duplicate suggestions. It'd also be nice if you skim through the suggestions other people have already made.
2. Please also avoid listing too many suggestions from the same source (i.e. the entire cast of Naruto).
3. Cards do not have to pertain directly to anime. They only need to be something that would be immediately recognizable to most convention goers. Generally, the game is more fun when there are only a handful of obscure references.
4. Just because something gets a card doesn't mean we are saying it is good or bad. It merely means that it is well-known. It's up to YOU to match red cards with descriptions during the game. This is what reveals the opinions and personality of the players!
5. Lastly, this may end up being a PG-13 panel, because there is the potential for "mature" card combinations, even though the individual cards usually won't be very racy. Opinions about this are welcome. However, remember that the original Apples to Apples isn't targeted specifically at kids, as there are cards such as "Sexy" (green card) and "The Holocaust" (red card) thrown into the mix.

Okay, now that I got the rules out of the way, here's the list. It's pretty long, but I hope to add many more to it, so please submit your proposed additions!  (Note that I've organized the red cards by category, but that's mostly for reference)

....That's all at the time of this post!  Also, I wanted to mention that I would appreciate it if someone would lend me a copy of Apples to Apples at some point.  I don't own the game at the moment, and it would make for a good point of reference. :)

Additionally, I would be happy to listen to suggestions for ways to run this game.  I will need to print up a very large number of cards in order to satisfy the needs of an entire panel, and there are several ways of going about that task.

This sounds totally amazing! I love this game to death. XD The only things I can think to add off the top of my head are One Piece, Pirates VS Ninja (as one card), and CLAMP. I don't think any of those were up there yet. >> I also think you should add Epic to the Green Card list. XD
ECCC/Sakuracon 2012
Impulse - Young Justice
Simon - Minor Acts of Heroism
?? Essence - Red Hood & the Outlaws
?? Cassandra Cain Batgirl - Batman

Yes to all of those, except I'd like to separate "Unwashed Gamers" into one green card and one red card. I find it's best not to pre-describe nouns when the game is about matching them with descriptions.

Also, Freebird on Expert... that's either Guitar Hero or Rock Band, right? It might be a bit too specific. But we'll see.

Don't forget to throw in Legend of Zelda and Mario somewhere. :3

Already in. :) Actually, they're in the original list above.

Do you mean animayhem?

Yeah, I knew about that game, but it seemed to be too focused on the American perception of anime, which personally made me lose a little interest.

I love Apples to Apples! I remember one time when I was playing A to A at the Sakura Con Halloween party and all the blank make-your-own nouns cards were automatically dubbed "clueless attendees."

But maybe there should be a 1337 adjective card. And catboy and catgirl noun cards.

The red cards usually have funny descriptions on the bottom and green cards have 3 synonyms on them. Are you going to do that for these cards?

(I think you should, but considering how many cards you have to make, it would take a lot of work. But I'm sure many people would be willing to help.)

Ha, Clueless Attendees. Could do for a red card.

1337 would be good for green.  I already have Catgirls as a red card.  Are catboys really dominant enough to have a card? For redundancy's sake should it be combined with Catgirls?

I do plan to do that, yes.  The synonyms are extremely useful for people who aren't quite clear on the meaning or interpretation of certain green cards.

I do expect it to be a lot of work... I'd quite appreciate help once I figure out a format for the card entries.  Would you like me to contact you when I reach that stage? :) Anybody who is interested, please feel free to contact me or post here.  This will indeed be a lot of work; the nice part about it is that there is plenty of time before the con, and the task is comparatively simple...just time-consuming.

Green card: Destruction of Tokyo

Red: Pirate, Ninja, AMV

A friend of mine made a home version with blank cards included in the deck so players could add things. It's hilarious my personal favorite was. Cards that don't make sense and someone played Jesus.

Sure sure... I just didn't want to be too much of a volunteer whore. I also didn't want to make you feel like you had to follow this topic if you don't want to. But I'll mention it here either way. ;)

Anyway! lots of suggestions.  I decided to reply the quick way: my comments within the quote boxes are shown in bold.

Green card: Destruction of Tokyo
Definitely not a green card, but a good red card. Guys, remember, I mostly need red cards. Green cards should be almost all adjectives, and if not adjectives, then something that would not work as a red card.

Red: Pirate, Ninja, AMV
What does this mean...? I doubt I could look it up somewhere, so I need to ask.

A friend of mine made a home version with blank cards included in the deck so players could add things. It's hilarious my personal favorite was. Cards that don't make sense and someone played Jesus.
Jesus? Not sure. Buddy Jesus, on the other hand, is so getting added. :D

Memes to add

LOLInternet
Sure, why not?

OVER 9000!!!
Good to go, but I haven't decided whether it's best as green or red.

PTKFGS (Punch the Keys for God's Sakes!)
That's sorta nested within YTMND...it largely counts as a "meta." I think it's a bit too far removed from the convention in this case.

The Emo Song
Heck yeah. "I must be emo."

Picard Song
Definitely. To confirm, though, this isn't the soft-shoe routine he did on the bridge of the enterprise, right? It's the songs that goes "Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise," correct?

Leroy Jenkins!
Good to go. "Least I have chicken."

Safety not guaranteed
"I have only done this once before..."

(I'll come up with more and add links later)
Everything so far is pretty good, so please keep adding. :)

.....

Green and Red card: Host Club Tea Party
Why would this be green? As a red card, though, it's good to go.

Freebird on Expert is Guitar Hero II.
Okay, we'll see, then.

Also add:

BESM (Big Eyes, Small Mouth) (red card)
Gotcha.
Lolita (green card)
I think "Gothic Lolita" and "Sweet Lolita" would work better as red cards. As a green card it's too specific...
Lolita Tea Party (red card)
Sure.
Crispin Freeman (red card)
Heck yeah.
Tokyo Tower (red card)
No doubt.
Ramen Noodles (red card)
Also good.
My very own Persocom! (red card)
XD Hilarious. This is my favorite of your suggestions, largely for the wording.
Man-Faye (red card)
Added this shortly after I posted the above list, actually. So yes, the hairy crossplayer is in.
Naps in the Lobby (red card)
Interesting... Never done it, but if it's common enough, I'll put it in.
Swag Bags (red card)
Ooh, good one.
Geeky (green card)
Pretty much EVERY red card suggested would apply, but still, good suggestion. ;)
Otaku (green card)
Perhaps as a red card. It has more meaning as a noun.
Furries (red card)
Yep, got it.
OMGWTFBBQ (green card)
Clever...not technically an adjective, but perhaps amusing enough to work.
Meg Uhde, Con Chair (red card)
I'm carefully avoiding names of specific staffers for reasons of avoiding annoying politics. That's why it says "con chairs" instead of a specific name.
The "call" Button (red card)
Huh? Do you mean on the hotel phones?
Weird Japanese Candy (red card)
I'd remove the word "weird", but otherwise good. "Weird" can go in the flavor text.

Red...

- Hello Kitty
- Domo-kun
- Banana Phone
- Samurai
- Phoenix Wright
- Harry Potter

I think I'll just give a green light to all of those suggestions. Good ideas. ;)

And awsome noun card would be Red vs. Blue! Or maybe Rooster Teeth! Or maybe characters from Red vs. Blue!
Red vs. Blue approved. I haven't watched much of the show, personally, so for other character/inside joke suggestions from it please discuss amongst yourselves to pick your favorites. (Other people here watch it, right?)

- Shuriken
- Deodorant
- Transformers
- Power Rangers

More good stuff from oishii...already have otaku funk, but deodorant would still be a good counterpoint.

Add:

Down, forward, Punch!
Please explain further?
Tetris Attack!
It seems (strangely) popular enough. Sure.
