I heard about this on the radio over here last week and could not believe someone would even think about changing Santa.

Oh wtf. Santa doesn't give off that sort of message. Kid's idols aren't Santa Claus anymore anyway. They're all skinny actresses.

Still, this doesn't top Australia trying to ban their Santas from saying "ho ho ho", claiming that it's offensive to women. Apparently they've even fired one for saying it.

That comes from a time when more personal interaction and signs of general affection via innocent but close contact were a social norm.

This is just another example of how people are becoming more and more foolish. This is one reason why I chose to celebrate Hanukkah instead of Christmas.

from all the things in my life that i have blamed for making me fat (from fried chicken to my older brother calling me big-fat-ugly-pig when i was 5 and a string bean) one thing i have never blamed is santa

Wow- what isn't PC anymore? It's like how you don't hear "Merry Christmas" in the media anymore and instead hear "Happy Holidays." I mean, Santa Claus was depicted as a big, fat, jolly man WAAAAY before child obesity became such a big issue.

Not to sound like a pain in the @$$, but it's Christmahannakwanzakah. Some friends of mine found it on Youtube so we could say it right. (I may have messed up the spelling a bit, but it's the right pronounciation).

sometimes I wonder if PC fanatics are so worried about offending somebody that they end up offending somebody. This Santa case sounds like a good example.

We can only hope. However I suspect they'd really be offended at your taking offense and expect your existence and freedom of choice to be erased instead.

If you ask an 8-year-old--ANY 8-year-old--if they want to be fat when they grow up, they will say no. Why? Because obesity is a disease; usually a very apparent one. It usually leaves a mark, but doesn't have to be permanent. Fat does not describe a person any better than vomitting does. Certainly, you can tell someone to look for someone with an affliction, but it is, despite all arguments, not a permanent physical feature. I know a girl who weighed about 200 lbs in 2nd grade and was down to around 110 by 8th grade. (she's maintained a healthy body since)

For someone to be fat is not a flawed role model, and Santa Clause is not a role model anyway. Firemen are role models. Actors and actresses are role models. Teachers and parents are role models. Ridiculous fairy tale characters made to help children conceptualise the selfless giving of Christmas are not role models.

Can Anime/Manga Characters be roll models too? I can think of quite a few of them that are minor players in my head... (Thought it's sometimes hard to remember their names...)

My logic says yes. Certainly, they're fictional, but no more than other fictional characters, like Obi Wan Kenobi (huge role model) or Ford Prefect (not as huge, but pretty cool).
