congoers selling themselves
« on: September 06, 2004, 10:03:28 pm »
ok, this is a bit of a complaint. i had an absolute blast at the con, but there seemed to be quite a few people selling their *cough* 'services' for a small fee. now, carrying around someone's swag bag for an hour or so for a few bucks is no problem...but making out and fondling each other in the RPG room is just gross. (some of you might know what im talking about) come on, nobody wants to see that.

did anyone else have a problem with this, or am i just being over-sensitive?

As Con security we were under instructions to have a zero tolerance for any activity that could be considered sexual harrassment.  If it was something innocent like a good hearted compliment (you look nice and such and a peck might be considered okay) but anything which might be considered offensive we were told to stop when spotted to prevent any small complaints from growing into larger problems.  If we saw it we would stop it.  Sadly we can't be everywhere and do rely on people to inform us if they see things.

One thing.  Selling yourselves, items, services, etc and such for anything is not allowed at Sakuracon...for good reasons.

Good point, Squall. While selling kisses for 50 cents isn't exactly commercial enterprise, anyone who wants to buy/sell something substantial in public at the con needs to register as a vendor of some sort.

I saw the signs a few times, but I wasn't aware of any rule they might be violating, even though I didn't much like seeing them. I'm curious to know whether only security had permission to police against such things, or whether I should have helped out if I had known better.

Honestly I'm not sure who all was told to watch out for 'con-whoring' (term I'll use for all the self selling stuff from here on), I just remember someone from the programming staff mentioning that we should have zero tolerance for it.  As a former private security guard (ie, I have read and understand the laws and regulations) I have to agree full heartedly, there are a slew of laws out there which could make the con and everyone involved liable for any problems resulting from that sort of stuff.  For instance an underage con goer selling kisses and getting one from someone over 18.  If anything happened involving this, someone complained or what not, the con could be viewed as condoning illegal activities.  So I say, definately we need to maintain a zero tolerance and actually write it into the reg and pre-reg forms, though in short form, just to cover our gluteous maximi.

I don't like being a hardass but in this case it does involve con-goer comfort, protecting the con, and most importantly protecting the con-goers.

I didn't have a problem with the "con-whoring". In fact alot in was funny to see the two Naruto cosplayers selling kisses Sunday night.

Con whoring isn't allowed at most, if not all, Con's because it IS a liability.

Which is why it won't be allowed at the next Kumori Con.  The rules about such behavior were simply over looked this year, but won't be again, rest assured.

Just out of sheer curiosity, what if someone were to simply offer kisses for free?

That kind of toes the line, though.  Like, glomping is generally allowed at cons as long as it's consensual (e.g., the glomper pauses before glomping and asks the glompee if it's okay, and the glompee agrees).  Some people might wish to be a little more...uh, physical.  I've seen it happen.  If it's consensual, what about that?

And for that matter, what about people who are cosplaying as a matching couple but who meet for the first time at the con and want to pose kissing for pictures?

(...I'm basically curious as all heck about this and playing devil's advocate, that's all.  ^_^)

I think the MAIN issue is that there were minors recieving kisses from overaged people. If the parents found out and cried foul or something, that'd be BAD BAD BAAAAD news for us, of course...

As for the picture thing, I think it'd probably be okay if they were both consenting adults... not sure how it'd be if they were both under, or one was.

I can totaly see the problems with the signs and the 'advertizments' but I really enjoyed all the guys with the "will glomp for food" or "my girlfriend dumped me, need glomps" those were cute, funny, and harmless in my opinion since glomps are considered okay at cons and that is definetly a consentualy thing between both parties. I even herad someone was giving away Ramue for glomps.

I would hate to see that go. It's part of that spontainious nature that comes along with cons, but if we can't work around it, I could understand not allowing it for safety issues but I'd still be a bit sad.

Those are kisses (no tongue please) between consensual, of age (aka no minors) congoers.

It's the selling of services, and ANTHING (except for glomping, really) with a minor that is an issue.

There will be complete rules posted on this later, after they're drafted. ^.^

I have to agree with one of the Ideas that past threw the info desk, All signs Should be Aproved by the info desk/other method like peace bonding, So that ID's and content can be checked, but then you need someone who undestands the rules at the desk to begin with. (Heard about a few things concerning Costumes and of all things Live Steel) Just one more thing to add to the list of things to start working on.

Who it was dosnt really matter at this point, I dont think it should be said who they were, they know who they were.  Where I was sitting in one of the events there were two other people in front of me that were also making out.  I did wish I had a cup of ice water to cool them off with and tell them to get a room.  Being painfully single I really didnt enjoy them doing that while sitting in the middle of a crowded room, right in front of me.

Nothing wrong with public displays of affection, but the way they were going at it you would think they were filming a porno.  Maybe she was choking and he was just trying to dislodge the blockage with his tongue.  hehe

Just something to keep in mind...  Self control!

Either that or ever hear "did you bring enough for whole group" LOL

Actually it was that and the one time someone was eating the worst smelling whatever it was, I was gaging on the scent, that were the only things that bothered me at the con.  Everything else rocked.

Mike J

ps. if you cant help making out at least sit in the back row so people dont have to look past you to see the stage.  :)

You mustn't get rid of Itachi and his 'Kiss the Uchiha' thang! It was a fun thing, made the fangirls happy, and people got cool pictures of teh hotness!

Besides, when you start telling people how to have fun at con, you just become militaristic, and fun only for a select few people. As long as they aren't kissing minors, who gives a hooey? :?

If a person of age is giving 50 cents for a kiss to some hot guy, or for free or whatever, I hardly see how a lawyer really needs to be called in for that one.

Ren Faires have had kissing booths for years, and I've never heard anyone complain about that!
