Hotel Staff/Security
« on: September 06, 2004, 05:41:45 pm »
I know this should've been brought up at the Rant and Rave, but it didn't cross my mind till it was over. I noticed throughout the convention that the Hotel staff and sometimes the security were either playing games in the game room, or even attending some of the events. I know this is probably really stupid to bring up, but it annoyed me. I even saw a staff win a prize for an item on the Wanted poster.
I really don't find that fair considering those of us attending the convention paid to attend. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this, or felt the same way, or if this happens at other conventions such as Sakuracon.

Well, most of the security staff were volunteers and as far as I know they had to pay to get in as well. Full price, just like everyone else.

I know, I volunteered to watch the video rooms for a while and my bf was on the security staff. There were some people working really hard to make sure everyone else was having a good time, not all of us were goofing around.

Its kinda sad that the hotel people got to do some of those things for free when we were working.
Anime makes me poor and always wanting more. Nyo?

First off, even full time staff had to pay to attend this convention.  We just paid less because we would be putting a lot more work into this convention than most of the other attendee's. (I had 12 hour shifts, and other people did to.)

So, on occassion, we actually had time off to enjoy an event.  By being on staff, we were forced to miss a lot of the Con, but would make room in our VERY busy schedule for at least one event. (I got to see Opening Ceremonies because my shift was all night, even though I was supossed to be sleeping.  Me being at FanFic Bedtime was because I was actually running a high fever, and had been relieved of active duty because I could not make acurate judgement calls.)

So don't be mad if you see a staff member attending an event.  Even we need a break for rest and relaxation.

About the Master Plumber Prize thing, I have no clue.  Staff was not eligable for it.  Are you sure it wasn't a volonteer?  All I know is that the Staff wasn't even eligable for Hallway Costume awards.  Volonteers were.
No, I'm not insane.  I'm just... happy.

Staff were could win a Hall Cosplay award, an attendee had to nominate them though!  We couldn't go judging out fellow staff members, could we?

It was in thr forums weeks ago.

Hotel staff was allowed everywhere because they were cleaning up, and some of them were security.  We had no say over what they did, though I was unaware that any of them stopped and played any games.

I have no complaints whatsoever about the con staff  or security. You guys were amazing considering how many attendees there were.

-EDITED-

I left this window sitting open in my browser for too long and some posts were made in that time that I should have read.  I'd rather remove my post since it would only cause confusion.  Read Procyon's below for the real skinny.

I wasn't aware that enough hotel staff were enjoying the con that it became a problem.

Hotels don't usually host conventions such as Kumoricon. They usually rent event space to businesses for trade shows or confrences. Which, like they sound, tend to be pretty unexciting (and thus easy for them to deal with). I didn't have an issue with a couple hotel staff occasionally playing a game or watching part of a video, becasue I was trying very hard to make them happy.

If the hotel staff get a good impression of our convention, the hotel is more likely to deal with groups like us again. Word also gets out to the other hotels that although we seem sort of quirky, we're really good people to deal with.

Since its hard to have a convention without convention space, I hope you see why keeping the hotel happy was important.

I was there all night Saturday night to Sunday morning and starting at 6 AM on Monday, and during those times the hotel staff did a lot of work cleaning up after the con. I know thats there job, but they probably had to work a lot harder then usual because of the intensity. And I know I dragged hotel staff away from whatever they were supposed to be doing for con stuff on a few occasions, like getting water for event performers and such. So for those people, if they want to play a few games, seems like a thank you isnt so bad.

I do understand the concern about others having paid to get in, and its totally valid. Thats great that this was brought up, now the staff knows about it, so maybe its something they could talk about either way to the venue next year beforehand. (though for all I know they already could have this year. =P )

I hope no one hesitates to bring something up because they think we are "already on it."  I know when I'm driving and my passinger points out the kid on the bike in the middle of the interection I'm turning to, I'm not going to snap and say, "I KNOW, I SEE HIM!" I'm going to say thanks because what if it was the one time I didn't?

If it's already been suggested and answered a bunch of times, you don't have to re-post, but if you have another idea for a solution, feel free to suggest it.  Con Staff are just a bunch of people that wanted to put on a big anime party (con) and even if people don't have time to join staff or volunteer year round, we welcome your brain power!

As far as Hotel Staff Goes I don't know how Sakura Con Dose it but Orycon and GameStorm (Both at the Dubble tree on the Clumbia) Alowed Hotel Staff to attend the Con at no cost (But then there staff dosn't have to pay ethire and the volinters get 1/2 off Next year if they reach a certain Number of HR's but that's an other Issue) One thing about Orycon they have the Hotel Staff Try and work the days of the Con (So we mostly have Staff that whant to deal with people in costumes and everything else working) Becuse they can come and partisipate. right now Komoricon is at least going to be changeing Hotels next year and likely to change again untill the Hotel space it Self is not an issue BTW the Cap is likely to always be an Issue till we use a conventon center and at that point they tend to be Indistry centered and not fan run like we Currently are.

The only time I saw anyone, there were these three guys watching after the cosplay. And I offered them some cookies. (I like cookies.) It was cool, even though they didn't eat any.

There was one hotel staff I know of that was actually invited to the bedtime stories. He was pretty helpful in setting up our room and went out of his way to provide the things we needed, so we thought he deserved to see it when he got off work.

He set up the room (stacked LOTS of chairs), got the bedding, got an extra table, the water, showed us how to set the lights, and got the little lamp that was there (at least I think he did).
