within our fanfic community, there is a lot of interest in, and writing of, yaoi and yuri fics. we may be able to have an official 18+ only hour of reading those at fanfic bedtime stories (i'll have to check with con staff about whether or not that could be advertised as such).

We'll see for next year.

(The following is all brainstorming on how it could happen if posible and not official.  It's just ideas of what things would need to happen...there could be more).

If it happens, it would have to be after curfew and there would have to be a badge checker stationed at the door the whole time to keep an eye out for minors.

We might even have to print real names on the con badges in tiny print and nicknames in large print to compare IDs to badge names at the door to make sure that a 15 year old didn't swipe her mom's badge and sneak in.

Another idea; a signed and NOTORIZED permission slip from the parents for attendees aged 16 or so and above could also be an option to allow older teenagers in.  It would have to spell out exactly what was could be discussed (and a held harmless agreeement) and in my opinion, a notory would have to confirm that it was the LEGAL guardian/parent of the child would have to contain an official notary seal.

I don't see why they couldn't just bring their child with them if they're interested too. Kids are allowed in R rated movies if their parents are with them, after all.

I thought I had this set for reply notification--so imagine my surprise to see replies!

These are all great ideas:  I was planning on attending the general meeting if it's at a day/time compatible with my work schedule, and volunteering my services for a yaoi viewing room/track.  I'm definately going to be getting a room this next year, so I'll be around after curfew.  Also, I'd be happy to check IDs and such, so that we don't get in trouble from enterprising folks.

Ciao,

That is a given and totally outside of what I was addressing, older teens attending on their own. Your own post easily stood on it's own as an additional suggestion and did not need any quoted material from my post.

I was focusing on the liability issues and a possible way to include older teens.  I hate the double standard that the same topic that would be OK to talk about with a 16 year old in the audience is all of a sudden not OK because the topic is not about male/female relationships.  But, one has to take into account the number of lawsuits filed today and I was exploring a way to see if a panel that discusses the RELATIONSHIP issues in Yaoi could be something that would not have to be limited to adults (or as in your good suggestion, limited to teens who have his or her parents attending as well.)

Why would it being m/m make a difference? I mean, sitcoms with gay characters don't get a higher rating because of it. Neither do movies (for the most part, although gay sex seems to be a different matter)

Also--I was thinking of having a discussion about the role of romance and shipping in the fandoms, and of course yaoi and yuri will play a large role in that. And that would be an all-ages discussion, so...(I say 'discussion' because I don't think panel format would really work for something like that)

Some more thoughts on the topic (longish)
« Reply #12 on: October 01, 2004, 01:04:51 pm »
In reply to Blackjack's assertion that discussion of m/m or f/f shipping could be kept at a certain level--I can agree with that, but the issue is some parents may not.

While it would be nice if all parents could agree that their younguns were capable of listening to discussion about the phenomenon of shounen-ai, shoujo-ai, yuri, and yaoi, there are quite a few folks out there who find the very idea perverted and wrong.

A notarized statement may not be necessary--it isn't for schools offering sex ed--but some sort of signed permission slip detailing possible topics would be necessary for the >18 set.

I don't know how we would get the form out before the con started, but maybe a printable .pdf file like Yaoi-con does for their folks.

Why is this a big deal to me?  Kinokuniya bookstore stopped stocking their yaoi items and have been carding buyers of yaoi for the last year due to a situation where a 16yo boy bought a book, his mom found it, and harrassed the store.  So now *I* have no idea what titles are coming unless I go the the Biblos website and look.

I'm trying to strike a balance between getting more fans into fandom, making a safe space for queer youth, and not coming across as an ecchi perv.  I would like to have younger fen join the discussion, because shounen-ai is a safe and fluffy way to explore feelings about relationships without having to resort to gay porn as the only source of info.

Is there a way to send >18 attendees a permission slip to bring to the con?

Um, are you talking about the one in Beaverton? Because I still see unwrapped yaoi there, and my underage friend was able to get FAKE there just recently.

I really hope you consider a yaoi-panel. I'm only 15 and a yaoi fan...so...;; Can there be a 13up shonen-ai discussion/panel? I don't find anything wrong with homosexuality whatsoever. How about a 13up yaoi/shonen ai panel (with not so hardcore things like Gravitation) and a seperate 18up panel?

About Kinokuniya-- they don't sell yaoi? (no wonder I didn't see any ;; )
