We need judges!
« on: September 01, 2004, 02:55:26 pm »
For this weekend's DDR tournament (for which rules are going to be posted very soon!), we need style judges!

This will all be explained when we post the rules we're frantically working on, but suffice it to say, we need two or three judges between the times of about 11 am and 3 pm on sunday. Judges will grade people on how impressive a show they can put on - NOT on technical merit. We've got a pretty great prize to hand out for the style competition, the winner of which will be solely decided by our three judges.

Our only requirement is that you not have a close friend entering in the running, to prevent any Olympic style judging fraud. Knowledge of DDR is awesome, but not at all required. Please reply here, or email me at scowling@gmail.com if you're interetsted.

I'd offer to get involved, but I'm not sure whether any of my friends are planning on entering.....

Well, how about this: I'll make my standard offer to be an emergency backup. According to Murphey's Law, someone will need one, right? :P

Yeah, I was considering it until he mentioned that law.

Knowing me, I'd "break a leg", literally speaking. :D

I'm also a staff member that will be "around" that can be grabbed for this kind of thing.  I have special small prizes for events like yours as well, so make sure to catch me.

I still want to find time to do the "Absolute Begginer DDR contest" sometime on Saturday or Monday. The grand prize will be given to everyone that enters except the last place person and that exciting prize is:

A sticker that says, "I am not the world's worst DDR player!"

(And a little something for the last place person too.)  ;)

I volunteer to help out if you still need help. I have sent an email to loreleilee offering my help too. I don't know anyone who is participating in the competition and I think it would be fun to help out the con in some way.  :D

Can't wait for the con, leaving tomorrow on the road trip to Portland!

DDR is short for Dance Dance Revolution.  It's a video game that actually requires skill.  You're up on a pad with 4 step "censors," up, down, left, and right.  There's a screen in front of you that plays music and has arrows going across the screen.  Your job is to step on said arrows when they reach the edge of the screen.  Also, you can pick what music to play to as there are (I'm guessing) +100 songs.
I could go on but that's the basic description of it.
What I like about DDR is that skill is the only important thing about playing it and it improves over time.  It doesn't matter if you're short, tall, skinny, heavy, young, or old.  I was in a tournament awhile ago and I was beaten by a kid about five years younger than me and his height reached me at chest level just to give you an example.

Sensors. The machine doesn't actually censor your dancing, no matter how bad you are. ;)

DDR Extreme has over 260 songs. :) The other mixes pretty much fit your description, on average.

I'd actually love to be a DDR judge.  I've played DDR many times and I know what "mad L337 DDR skillz" look like.  So... where do I show up at 11 on Sunday?
