Either Sailor Moon or Digimon and that was before I knew what anime was exactly.

Was Thundercats technically an anime?

Negima: I'm not sure I would count Thundercats as anime. Kind of in the same boat as He-man and all those awesome 80s cartoons.

My first..I can't remember which of the two I saw first, but either Dragonball (original) or Akira..but I am leaning more towards it having been Akira.

The earliest anime I can remember watching would be Samurai Pizza Cats (which I probably got re-runs of when I was 4-5). I didn't start watching anime until I saw Voltron on Toonami when I was about 5. Sailormoon followed, as did Dragon Ball Z. Snowball effect from there.

I'd have to say I started (like many, I imagine) with Sailor Moon. Ah, yes, Sailor Moon. Waking up at 5:00 to catch that Pretty Soldier. Then Sci-Fi channel helped me from there, with their Anime Saturdays. I started watching movies like Armitage III, 8th Man After, and Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer. Throw Dragonball in with this, and there was a pretty broad base for building. ^_^

unico is something COMPLEATLY DIFFERENT from the last unicorn!!!!!

Unico is a manga and anime character by Osamu Tezuka. Unico is a baby unicorn with red hair, and has the magical power to grant wishes and happiness to anyone who finds him. His friends in the various manga and anime incarnations of his story include Beezil, a bratty blue devil; Chao (or "Katy" in the English anime), a mischievous cat; and a warm-hearted human girl named Cheri.
and it is super hard to find
ps how many of these first anime threads are we gonna have i think this makes 3

A close tie between Speed Racer and Sailormoon. Trick was, I had to get through the Rocky and Bullwinkle show to watch Speed Racer (Cartoon Network, mid-90s) and I had to set the VCR going and tape the last half of Gargoyles or Mighty max as well because Sailormoon came on at 7, which was 15 minutes after I left for school.

anime I watched not knowing that's what it was:
Speed Racer
Thundercats
Samurai Pizza Cats

the first anime that actively stole my soul:
Slayers (Still the only anime I like better dubbed, because goddamn that's how I saw it first!)

The old release of Nauusica and the Valley of the Wind that come out here a long time ago, called Warriors of the Wind. That was the first anime I saw, loooong before I knew what anime even was.

Well, I probably saw a few back in the day, but I don't recall them and I didn't get hooked as a result.  Also, I've never watched a single episode of anime on TV untill this summer.  It's all been stuff I've rented.  I actually started watching the stuff regularly a little over two years ago, when I borrowed a friend's copy of Spirited Away.

Actually, now that I think of it, prior to that, the first one I saw was probably La Blue Girl.

I think Vampire Hunter D. And I might not even have been in middle school yet. Then I saw anime like Guyver, Devil Man, Akira, whatever was on Sci-Fi, etc. In 7th/8th grade I discovered Neon Genesis Evangelion and Tenchi Muyo and things were never the same again!

The first anime I ever saw was Sailor Moon and it was being played on Toonami. It always played shortly after I came home from school. Even though I was present to see it, I still just had to have it on tape, so I recorded every episode they shown. I loved the anime so much then and still do to this day.

Voltron back when I was 4 and living with my biological mother. The second one was probably Robotech, which stole Voltron's timeslot and made me really mad at it for a few months.

I can remember a bunch of other really old ones from the mid-80s but none older than that. I have trouble remembering that far back as it is! heh.

Even back in the mid 90s being obsessed with Sailormoon & having decent internet was extremely educational. Quickly, you learned the meaning of words like "hentai" and "ecchi" and eventually "doujinshi."

i think my first anime experience was -honestly- DragonballZ.

...but don't jump to conclusions!! This was...like...back in 1987, WAY back in the day when i was 2 or 3. i lived on Okinawa, the main island of Ryukyu. it's the first anime i could possibly recognize today. As for the other programs, i can't put titles to them because i couldn't read. i would like to see if i can't find a title for this one show i used to watch. it was a kid's cooking show.

DragonballZ is a snooze for me now. i saw most of the episode before they even aired in the US, so once Cartoon Network started playing them in English, i remembered key plot-points, so i'd give spoilers to my school mates on request. "Dude, what's gonna happen in the next episode!?", "Gohan goes Super Saiyajin 2 and kicks the crap out of Cell", "NO WAY!!".

Now that i think about it, Hello Kitty is another i remember.

DAH!! DORAEMON!? That little turd is EVERYWHERE!!
That short blue freak gave me nightmares when i was little. The Pokemon franchise has nothing on Doraemon. Toys, books, games, movies, lamp shades, car accessories, toilet seat covers (i'm not kidding), you name it, that thing's got it all! it isn't the merchandise that scares me though, it's his face! it's so menacing!

I mistakenly saw a hentai before any real anime! I visited my uncle in Colorado, and he had a box of videotapes of "Cartoons" as I called them, but it was actually a box of random anime and ONE hentai video. He said some co-worked had left them at his game shop and I was free to take them, so when I got home I popped in a tape called "New Angel"...

And had to turn it off very quickly before my mom came in!!

I was quite surprised. Luckily the other videos included Tenchi and Devil Hunter Yoko, so I was safe!

After that I moved on to Gundam Wing on Toonami, but I never got into Sailor Moon. I thought it was kind of childish. Granted, I was in Junior High/High School by then. The first anime I started and couldn't stop watching was Fushigi Yuugi. Boy was I glad I had an asian friend with lots of anime I could borrow!

Actually it was pretty softcore, they edited out all the naughty bits so they were invisible, but you could still see what people were "doing" with them. Weak plot too.

That happened to my friend too. He was an anime viewer for quite some time, but failed to notice the "NOT FOR CHiLDREN" sticker on the DVD box of "Dragon Rider". His father bought it so there was no question at the checkout counter. Later, when he got home, he popped it in and promptly called me to to confess his mistake...and then watched the movie about 50 times.

Why did your friend call you to confess his mistake? That just leaves me baffled. I honestly just don't understand. But, you know me and how I hardly understand anything. So, there should be no surprise there.

then a few years later I watched naruto- and with that my fate was sealed.

Hi hi peoples!  Long time no see! ^_^
My first anime...Hello Kitty!  :)  And them Pokemon.
The one that actually started it for me was Spirited Away.  I saw it in A&E, and it looked SOOOO awesome!  I never did see it until it came out on DVD, but I did research and stuff on the movie before I saw it and it said it was anime.  So I watched some anime!  The first watched one was "Kiki's Delivery Service".
And I never was the same again! O_O

I think I know which anime came second for me, seeing as it was years between. Voltron. And I was so ashamed to be watching it with other grown men. Especially after watching so many episodes, and it was so the same every time. They had no shame, watched all the kids cartoons too. He-Man, Go-Bots, at least the Transformers had different things happening, and He-Man did to, but it was so late 70s for my tastes.

Next came Nausicaa, which was played on TV in San Diego. Then I got to see Laputa at Cinema 21 in Portland. I think it was there. It must have been just after I got out of the Navy.

Nausicaa is just not the same after reading James Joyce's Ulysses. Nausicaa is part of the original tale of Ulysses in the Homerian epic.
